Feast or famine offense. Wish more guys on the O's could work a count and take more walks. I was thinking this was the Elias way, but it's looking like it's either long ball or nothing a lot of time.
O's rise or sink to the level of the competition. It's hard to understand a team that plays better against the best teams than against cellar dwellars.
Phillies great record is a product of their weak schedule. They have only played 6 games against teams over .500 and are 3-3. They have played series against the Marlins, White Sox, Rockies and 2 series against the Nats.
I just looked thru their record a while ago. Series against the Nats (2), White Sox, Marlins, Cardinals, Rockies and Angels makes their record of 1 win better than the O's way less impressive. Their schedule coming up must be hell.
Phillies are doing ok w/ a below average 3B Alec Bohm. It doesn't hurt that he has an OPS of 1.000. I think Westburg is more than adequate. Is his arm ideal, of course not. Would you rather have Urias there w/ better defense and a nonexistent bat. Getting another Machado or Brooks would be winning literal lottery. I think Westburg will be fine.
He would need to start hitting at career average rates. Even then what could the O's get? Will be lucky to get a DSL lottery ticket. I won't be surprised if Hays gets the majority of at bats when he returns unless Cowser starts hitting due to Hays' defensive superiority. Hyde made sure that people knew that Cowser was just getting more at bats than Hays "for now".
Plus Wells is coming back and could pitch in the rotation and Povich looks like he could give some starts if needed. I'm feeling really good about the starting pitching depth, which wasn't something I could have foreseen when both Bradish and Means started the season on the IL for weeks/months(?).
Hmmm, interesting, I assumed the O's with all their pitching had too many starters at one point. I know at one point, the team was so stacked with position players that someone won the Triple Crown at Rochester and went back there the next year.
