Well if he's as good as Todd Helton was, he won't be down any list of our best hitters, unless we are employing the AL Allstar team.

I'm not sure how familiar that you are with who Todd Helton was. But he was a career .316 hitter with a .414 on base and a .953 OPS. Of course he played his home games at Coors, but that is still kind of like amazingly awesome.

Simmer down...  Just because you've got it all figured out doesn't mean I do.

I like the Todd Helton comp for Kjerstad in the video. Totally can see that. (Not saying Heston is a HOFer haha)

I'm here for that ride!  Especially if he's down the list of our best hitters!

I thought we were talking about everyday players. Sure, you'll get guys with an .850 OPS in 300-400 ABs.

I though we were talking about HK and didn't notice the conversation was about Mayo.

I think your main point about an .850 OPS being exceptional is valid.  Just added some extra data points around it.

Interesting to hear outsiders now talking about the guys we have been talking about and anticipating for several years.

The O's didn't use their own strategy when drafting Bradfield.  They went more for speed and defense that that elite college bat.

Can we get Buster Olney, talking heads, and various posters to look in the mirror for their ridiculing Elias' "hoarding" prospects?

The strategy has always been about raising the competitive floor/ceiling while managing risk like a portfolio manager.  Seeking alpha while managing beta is the goal.  Sig's purpose is the quantify.

And yet we still have people tossing out trade proposals and extensions and unhealthy FA pursuits because they know better and moving prospects to other positions.  It's fun to speculate but it's foolish to present it as an absolute.

There were 18 players in all of MLB who had an OPS of .850 or higher last year. I don't think people realize that is a pretty high bar.

Lower the bar to 400 PAs and there were 27.  Health and platoons?  Still less than 1 per team.

In the early going, there are 42 over .850.  Still wouldn't count on it, but crazier things have happened from lesser talent over the course of a season.

As a team, O's team OPS is .780.  Sure a few mild surprises, but also a nothing burger from Holliday.

So was Baltimore's strategy an "either/or" with Burns and Cease?  Or were they targeting both?  Regardless, I'm happy with how it turned out for the O's.

That wouldn't surprise me.  Play the selling market off each other a bit.

I posted this in the Westburg thread but thought it was appropriate to post here. Norby is not a huge EV guy. Last year he was very similar. So while he's doing well and has had success, he does not hit the ball consistently as hard as players like Westburg, Gunnar, or Cowser and is behind Mayo, Kjerstad, Holliday and many non descript Norfolk teammates. Now is he far behind? No, but it's just worth noting.

The EV is average at best but I wasn't expecting a 90+ thumper.  But the HH% is lower than I expected.  It would be nice to know what it was last year in AAA...

I was thinking that if Norby can maintain his BB% and LD%, then he's got a good shot at replacing/improving on Hays career norms even if not the HR numbers.  The HH% could use a bump though.

If a playoff game were to be played tomorrow, I'd feel alot more confident about the Orioles chances with Urias and Westburg in the lineup and Holliday wasn't. Specifically, Urias taking his gold glove to 3rd base and Westburg playing 2nd base.

Sure.  But what if Holliday pays his rookie tax and is Robbie Alomar 2.0?  Or even Brian Roberts 2.0?  If he’s the Ghost of John Gochnaur, then we have Urias.

I really think his leg kick is doing him no favors.  Yeah you can time that playing against HS or low farm team players.

It's about getting his lead heel down on time for the high velo but also maintaining the sequence for something offspeed.  He’s doing neither well.  No leg kick is just less moving parts but planting the heel is what really starts the actual swing.

All I gotta say is can you imagine getting production from the #9 spot?  I used to be disappointed if the bottom of the lineup was coming up.  Now I look forward to it.

Yup.  If the rest of the lineup continues chugging, getting anything from #9 will be nuts.

If he’s struggling and we play 10 games under .500 then our issues are way bigger than him.

If we go 4-6 over a 10 game span then we can't give away outs.

He smacked a line drive right at Frazier today for a line drive out. Just made a sick play at 2B.

The O's are 13-7, they can be a bit more patient with him

Agreed.  We're carrying him pretty well so far.  Which is what you want while he's figuring things out.  If he's still struggling and we have a 10 game section under .500 then it becomes a bigger concern.

This is true they have a good team! I’m delighted that we have pitchers that guys here criticize when a 3 ER performance over 6 innings is a bad outing.

Who will have a better record at seasons end:  KC or BOS?

I'd rather trade a lesser prospect for a guy with fewer years of control. We are going to need Kjerstad to replace Santander and/or O'Hearn

This feels like the path that Elias will take.  If there's an SP upgrade, then the odds increase.

Keep the higher end talent for the long haul.  Supplement in the short term with the next tier.

I said it before and  I'll say it again. We remember Means being the only good pitcher on the worst team in baseball by far, for years. I get we romanticize those players, but he wasn't an Ace then and he sure doesn't look like he'll be one now.

No romamticizing here.  Many referred to him as a solid #2 back in the day.  I referred to him as a #2-3.  Going forward he's a back-end starter at best unless he proves something more than the smoke and mirrors from last season.

Wells is simply not a starter. He was able to get by last year and succeed for almost a half of the season (similar to 2022) until he couldn't. I hope that he can help us in the pen. But even in that I am not confident about because of his penchant for giver up long ball.

Kremer is what he is at this point - a decent back end of the rotation starter. From the one start that he made, I liked the way the ball came out of Suarez's hand a lot better than Kremer or Wells to be honest. Hopefully Bradish can come back by early May to give us 3 good consistent starters.

Right now we only have 2 and that is not enough. (Too early to tell with Suarez) Especially when you consider we only have 3 reliable BP arms. Maybe if Wells can return to the pen and less is being asked of him, he can give us a 4th good BP piece? Webb is decent but the rest are mediocre to below average.

I was talking about their cutters.
