When does Kevin Brown make note of a number one pick trying to make a play on like the 583rd overall pick? Why’s it always notable that it’s like the number one pick trying to make a play on the number two overall pick? Why’s it noteworthy at all?

It'll help you fill out an Immaculate Grod one day.  Many baseball fans like trivial tidbits.

Ton of pitchers have done well in that class.  And the best wasn't taken until pick 126. Plus quite a few are evidence in favor of SP aversion early in the draft.  Especially in a rebuild.

But Tork wasn't there at #2 and the actual guy wasn't listed as an option.

HK was a good pick.  Especially when packaged with Westburg and Mayo.

He was pushed to AA at the end of last year without really proving anything in A+.   I guess they decided to put the brakes on the 17 year old.

Yep, that's why I said back at A+.  AA was a head scratcher last year for him.

Minnesota may also be an okay yardstick what it looks like if Rubenstein's Orioles settle around 20th in MLB payroll.

Fangraphs today has 2024 MIN there on the dot at $128M.

The 2023 team finally got the playoff monkey off its back, and spent just over $150M in that effort.    This winter they did not really try to retain Sonny Gray, and are replacing him with lower cost pitchers.     Jorge Polanco was also dealt off the top of the deck.

The market did support the Carlos Correa splurge, and the ALDS berth is the high achievement so far with perhaps Correa's best funded team in the rearview mirror.   Correa now at age 29.5 was enjoying having his foot speed back in the early going, but had the oblique strain this past week that has him off the board this series.

Buxton, Kiriloff, Lewis, Correa...  probably a few more.  But talk about an org snake bit then embracing the injury risk.

  5. Strand rate is 59.5%.  Probably trend towards up.

BABIP against is about .100 higher than career norms.

HH% and pull% are higher than norm in the SSS.

Looks like the 4S getting hit a bit.  Maybe they're ambushing him or a sequencing issue.

Nick Pollack is still a believer.

Yeah, I want to put him back up there too. I just wish he and Mateo would show bunt at least once every game they play. Make the defense think about, probably come in or shift around so it potentially opens holes for base hits.

Soto dropped a bunt to get on in front of Judge.

Are those upper 70's/low 80's pitches his CB or a Sweeper?  Good vertical break, burying the pitch down, and nice MPH gap between his FB.

I don't recall any commentary on that play. What did you think of the double steal play? Seems like that was possibly on Holliday but it was hard to tell from the views they presented.

I was in the bleachers yesterday.  My take was that Holliday got a late look and at that point made the right call to just get the out.  I dunno...

Whether or not it's on Holliday, it's like the scouting report is to push Holliday's defensive chops just to see...

  9. Let them continue to get full-time PAs in AAA.

    * Wait until Holliday gets his sea legs under him.

    * See what happens with Bradish/Means.

    * See how Urias/Hays play in that time too.  Same with Cowser.

    Then make a decision.

Norby's fate is tied to Hays IMO.  Mayo is tied to Urias.  HK and Stowers are roster expansion options or the other end of a long leash for Santander and O'Hearn.

FWIW, I think Urias is the low man on the roster for now.  But I highly doubt they'll bring up anyone to sit the bench like Urias.

Funny how the concept of the dreaded small sample size gets thrown out the window or outright ignored when someone’s swinging good. It’s propped up when someone’s swinging bad, as evidence that they’re not as bad as they appear to be.

But now we’re dreaming about Kyle Tucker 2.0.

Or maybe we're hoping what we saw in AAA in 2023 can be similar to what we get in the MLB.

I am surprised by his power,,and he hits it hard off lefties too...I think he's legit...

Agreed.  Two years ago his lefty splits were heavily influenced by Aberdeen.  Why that is is debatable, but he's done much better since.

  12. From the stands it didn't look like he had his best stuff/command going today.  But like Grayson's last turn, made it work.  Some hard contact with good defense and some bad contact where we couldn't do anything.

Looks like he gets a hug from Cowser/Henderson. I’m at the game and it’s very bright, so hard to see on my phone.

I was there too.  Bleacher seats with the family.  The natives were getting restless after his first 2 ABs...  Glad he got #1 out of the way!  Because I'm confident the boo birds were coming.
