Shawn Armstrong has 74 saves in his major and minor league career.  He comes off the IL on Sunday.  I think he is the logical choice for close for the rest of season.

I think getting cheaper is a driver in Elias decision to trading Givens and Castro.  But there is more.  I think he believe he has depth in relievers at Bowie with Hanhold and Gonzalez.  Just like he traded Milone because he had Akins to take his place.   Note that Iglesias is still with the O's with his 3M salary probably because the O's have no replacement for him.

Elias  has built a player development organization.  He  believes he can scout talent and improve that talent when he acquires it.   He claimed Lopez and  now are making changes to him that he  thinks will make Lopez successful.  Even though two other clubs have given up on him.

I am not expecting a big drop-off in the pen with Givens and Castro gone.

Fair points, but I don't think the Brewers gave up on Lopez.  They traded him and Brett Philips for Moustakas.

8 man bullpens are the norm now with 26 man rosters.

I see the mix in 2021 being:

    Locks: Harvey, Fry, Scott

    Probable: Lakins, Sulser

Long Man Competition: Zimmermann, Valdez, Lopez (choose 1 or 2)

On the bubble: Phillips, Mattson, Armstrong, Tate

AAA depth: Hess, Pop, Carroll, Kline, Alvarado, etc.

I think Tate and Armstrong are more on the probable side than the bubble side.  Depending on performance the rest of the season and their offseasons, etc.  But I have been impressed with Tate especially.

He led the Carolina League with 42 doubles and was 2nd with 20 homers as a 21-year-old in 2016.  Then the O's took him in the Rule 5 draft and had him wander in the desert for most of the next two seasons.

I think he's a pretty legitimate player.  A cost-controlled .800-.850 OPS from a RFer is not a bad deal.  As an Oriole Nick Markakis OPS'd .793.  Things like K rate and ISO are among the earliest to be legit, so I'm cautiously optimistic about his power and really good contact numbers this year.

I agree.  I do hope the Orioles keep him.  Just trying to get into Elias's head as to what he ay be thinking with other outfielders coming up the pipeline.

Never say never, but I think it would very surprising if they traded Santander.

I agree.  Though it is possible that his value may ever be higher.  I say that hoping I am wrong, but he did not hit the cover off the ball in the minors, so as good as he has looked, this or even something close to this us probably not sustainable.  In the end, he is probably a .775-.850 guy, which is very valuable, but I do wonder what it could get us now with him red hot.

  5. I wonder if Elias would listen to calls concerning Santander. For the record, he is my favorite Oriole and I don't want to trade him.  He has three years of control after this year (correct?) and we still have Diaz, Mountcastle, Hays, Mullins, Stewart, and eventually Kjerstad in the outfield.  Do you think it is possible that Santander is traded?  If so, what would you expect him to fetch in a trade?

I’m not saying he would be good for some people, but given how many other teams are selling, I’m sure he would be the best available or even the least expensive. But we shall see, I would be happy if somebody wants him.

Agreed, I'd be happy to move him.  He's cheap and controllable though.  Would be interesting to see what they could get for him, and then let Sisco and Wynns/Holaday be the catchers until AR is ready.

    The Padres also need relievers.

The A’s would love someone like Alberto.

why would the pirates be acquiring anything at this moment? Who would want our catchers? They aren’t terrible but they are hardly Desirable, and Severino just went down.

We have some widgets other teams would like, but nothing they’d pay much for.

If Severino isn't DL bound, he would be a solid pick up for a team.  He won't sustain a near .1000 OPS, but he should be an .800 plus guy the rest of the way.  Yes, his defense is questionable.

If you assume that the Os probably have to finish 3rd to make the playoffs (not 100% sure thing but a reasonable assumption), and you assume the Red Sox are already dead in the water, then finishing ahead of Toronto is the single biggest goal the Orioles need to accomplish.

Right now we are 3.5 games ahead of the Blue Jays.  Three days from now we will be somewhere between half a game ahead of them to 6.5 games ahead of them with 37 games left.  That is a huge swing.

Our ten games with Toronto (over 1/4 of our remaining schedule), are huge.  That last weekend of the season in Buffalo could be as big as 1989.

    It all starts tonight!

Gottatake at least two of these games.

Smith is one of the worst LFers I've ever seen - maybe THE worst.  I can't imagine Mountcastle isn't better.  Same with Diaz, btw.

100%  I would be thrilled if Diaz or Mountcastle came up to play left every day.  Let Velazquez start against tough righties or on off days for his defense.  We just don't need Smith anymore.

  10. I am really, really over Dwight Smith in left field and at the plate.  Seems like a great guy, and he has had his moments, but can his defense really be so much better than Mountcastle's that he should continue starting every day?

When the Orioles played the Nats last Sunday and the Nats' ground crew couldn't get the tarp on the field, we were told that, according to the rules, the game wasn't over.  It was suspended, and the rest of the game would have to be played in Baltimore on Friday night, prior to the scheduled game.  Furthermore, we were told that, even though two games were to be completed Friday night, the seven-inning doubleheader rule would not be in effect - both games would have to go the full nine innings.

Last night, the Rays and Blue Jays were unable to finish an official game on Saturday night.  The game was suspended with play in the fourth inning.  They resumed it today and completed nine innings, with the Rays winning in the ninth.

They then played the regularly scheduled game - but that one was played under the seven-inning doubleheader rule.  (Note that the game actually lasted eight innings - the teams were tied at the end of the seventh inning, so they played an eighth inning, starting with a runner on second base.  The Rays won again.)

What provision of the rule says that when the Orioles have to complete a suspended game prior to a regularly scheduled game, the second game must go nine innings, but if other teams have to complete a suspended game prior to a regularly scheduled game, the second game only has to go seven innings?

I wondered the same thing! Great minds...
