I hope he’s going to make the team. I want him at third base, but he only hit 238 last year and I’m not sure he’s got enough of a bat.

Never hits for a high average, but a good power/OBP guy.  I'd predict a .750 - .800 year for him as a regular.

The thing with Davis is, even if he somehow were to be decent again, it STILL wouldn't be worth playing him because they need to get at-bats for Mountcastle, Santander, Mancini and Stewart at the LF/RF/1B/DH spots.

I don't think Stewart will be a contributor to the team when they hope to contend (say, 2023), but it is at least theoretically possible as a first year arbitration eligible player that he could be around in 2023. He should get as many at-bats as possible until Yusniel Diaz comes up and takes his spot as another guy who is probably not good enough to be a starter for a team with playoff ambitions.

Likewise with Mancini, who will be a free agent after 2022, he should either be traded or extended within the next year and should play as much as his health allows.

I agree with all of this.

Why did Toronto give Semien 18 million for one year? Can someone explain to me why this is not an overpay? Do they think they're going to win the WS in 2021?

    .747 career OPS

    .679 OPS in 2020

    Career 105 OPS+

I know he balled out in 2019, but I'm struggling to make sense of that deal.

Agreed.  He did finish third in the MVP voting in 2019, but I had him pegged for an AAV of about 11-15 millon, max.

If nothing changes, Orioles pitchers and catchers are due to report February 16 and with things being as they are with the Orioles, it's doubtful they add any significant pieces before opening day. Obviously that could change with potential waiver wire transactions, signing of a minor league free agent or the Orioles trading away someone like Santander, Cobb or Mancini before the season starts.

Either way, without much to discuss, why not run an exercise where we will try and predict the Orioles opening day 26-man roster (Note: It hasn't even been announced yet whether that number will be 26 or not this year yet).

I'll do it by position by who I think will be starters.

    (13)
    1B: Trey Mancini
    2B: Ramon Urias
    SS: Yolmer Sanchez
    3B: Rio Ruiz
    LF: Ryan Mountcastle
    CF: Austin Hays
    RF: Anthony Santander
    C Pedro Severino
    DH: DJ Stewart
    UTL: Pat Valaika
    OF: Cedric Mullins
    C : Chance Sisco
Bench: Chris Davis (though I think they will try to DL him after it steps into the Ubaldo pothole)

    (13)
    SP: Means
    SP: Cobb:
    SP: Akins
    SP: Kremer
    SP: Zimmermann
    RP: Cesar Valdez
RP: Hunter Harvey (assuming he doesn't spontaneously combust)
    RP: Armstrong
    RP: Scott
    RP: Lopez
    RP: Max Sceroler
    RP: Lakins
    RP: Fry

I think they will sign someone like Galvis or Villar, but until then, here is my prediction:

    C Severino

    1B Mancini

    2B Valaika

    SS Sanchez

    3B Ruiz

    LF Mountcastle

    CF Hays

    RF Santander

    DH Stewart

    Urias

    Sisco

    Davis

    Mullins

    Means

    Cobb

    Akin

    Kremer

    Zimmermann

    Fry

    Scott

    Tate

    Harvey

    Valdez

    Armstrong

    Screoler

    Lopez

    Obviously, a very uninspiring team.

The guy was awful from start to finish, amplified by the fact that he replaced a giant in Jon Miller.  I will never forget Mr. Hoffman, the OH minor league reporter, who said his summer drives around MD between Bowie, Frederick, Aberdeen, etc., were made far less pleasant by the substitution of Hunter for Miller.   I guess it goes without saying that it is unfortunate whenever someone loses their job, but this is not a situation much different from when a AAA relief pitcher is released.   We should also remember Hunter's absurd focus on the incompetence of umpires  - while simultaneously ignoring the incompetence of the players on the field if they wore the right color uniform  - and his suggestion that umpires should be demoted to the minors just like ballplayers.   That process just impacted his own life.

    K.

He obviously was a homer and had annoying cliches, but I grew up listening to him on the radio and then later in life, on TV.  For nostalgic purposes, he will be missed.  I wish him luck.

And he had been with the Orioles for 24 years.  It is not like the release of a AAA pitcher.

What an incredibly annoying thing to read:

The Orioles aren’t in a position to hand out long-term extensions, if that’s what you’re thinking.

Lol.  It was definitely not what I was thinking about Santander.

My opinion is I like Santander and like the Rule V story of him becoming good after being plucked from the Indians.  But if you can get a good return for him, you trade him.  That's the nature of the rebuild, despite our personal likes and dislikes of players.

And just to add to this, while it obviously helps that the Yankees can spend money, they were burned by a lot of the high priced guys in 2017, a year they won 91 games.

Tanaka wasn’t good that year.  Ellsbury was a zero.  Holliday and Headley were very mediocre.  Gardner had a good year and Castro was decent

Their best players were Judge, Sanchez, Severino, Didi and Chapman.  Mostly home grown guys.

Exactly.  It was good international signing and scouting (which we obviously weren't doing until the regime change) and smart trades to replenish the farm system.

In Roch's blog this morning, he wrote about Santander being available for trade and drawing interest from the Marlins.

I would doubt he goes anywhere before the deadline, but who would the Marlins have to send to the Orioles if they want Santander? I would start with JJ Bleday, Kameron Misner and Dax Fulton, and add a DSL player. If he stays healthy and has similar production to 2020, the price would go up. Thoughts?

I'd be pleasantly surprised if we could get Bleday, let alone Bleday plus, for Santander.  And I am a big Santander fan.

Did you really write a paragraph about how the Yanks took $7 trillion and a deep system and reloaded in three weeks, so there's no reason for any team to ever tank?  The Yanks' "different financial constraints, etc" include literally two-and-a-half times the revenues of the Orioles.

I really did write the paragraph, yea.  Imagine that!!  I said the situations are obviously different, but it is possible for a team to trade off major assets and not suck for the next 3-5 seasons.

Yep...and all of those fan bases have been fooled that it must take as long as it does.

While not the best example, the Yankees "sell off" in 2016 shows that a rebuild does not need to take years and years.  They traded a huge trade chip in Chapman for Gleyber Torres, traded Andrew Miller for some good pieces, traded Beltran for Tate (which got them Britton shortly thereafter) made a few more moves, and were competitive again.  Again, they operate with different financial constraints, etc., but this is proof that a rebuild does not need to include purposely terrible seasons.

They've had a lot of help.

It isn't as if the O's are breaking new ground here.  In the last decade or so these types of tanking movements have become pretty standard in American proffesional sports.

Look at how hard the 76's tanked(three consecutive seasons playing under .250 ball) and they haven't even made a conference finals since.

This is true.  And to this point, the hardcore tanking of the Sixers netted them two very good draft picks at the top of the draft (Embiid and Simmons) and two awful early picks (Okafor and Noel).  Being awful for good draft positioning does not always yield results.

All of these guys are garbage.  The idea that we are still adding guys like this and that they legitimately have a chance at the rotation is disgusting.

It's incredible how competing is literally the last thing the Orioles have interest in for the 2021 season.  Like, at least sort of try to win games this year?  It's not like that will derail the rebuild...
