One year bounce backs you start talking about guaranteed contracts, opt outs, team options.  Lots of stuff can be a factor over putting up stats.

The biggest motivation is securing a multi-year contract. It's delayed gratification sometimes: take a little less money right now (all opt-outs being equal), put yourself in a good situation according to you and your agent's evaluation, and cash-in sweet do-re-me the following winter, if everything goes as planned.

I don’t think outfield defense moves the needle much when it comes to pitchers choosing a team.   You know what moves the needle?

    1.  Money

    2.  Whether the team as a whole is good.

    3.   Money

    Did I mention money?

Money? Depends: Long-term contract or Short-term contract? Long-term contract -- it's all about the Money. One-year bounce back contract: it's all about putting up good stats to get a long-term contract the following year... and lots of money then.

Also, the cutaways to Rob Long's hurried, monotone cramming of often unimpressive stats is annoying. I think they annoy Palmer too, since they tend to disrupt the mood and flow of his more narrative, less stat-tethered commentary.

Got no respect for Lob Rong's shtick.

I wonder if they can bring him back one day this summer, just for the induction of "JAY.... JAY.... Hardy!" into the Orioles HOF.

Honestly, when all is said and done, that's pretty much what I'll remember him for.   He did a fine job, but nothing else particularly distinctive or memorable jumps out in my mind..

The only thing I remember him for, too, but I never liked it. It was like it was more about him than it was about Hardy. So he's 0-1 in my book. I won't miss him.

Bye bye freedom of speech. And so much for keeping "politics" out of baseball.

As an employee, you are expected to act in a way representative of what your employer wants. That has zero to do with "freedom of speech."

Honda is also ranked as the number 1 stolen car maker because of how easy they are to steal. (1)

Catcher takes such an abusive at the position, that they better be a durable dude. (2)

    (1) This makes no sense. People do not buy cars because they are easy to steal.

    (2) Hondas are durable.

This entire thread kind of seems like debating over whether you should drive the Accord or the Altima when you have a Porsche coming in on back order.

The Honda Accord is one of the most reliable vehicles on the road and rates near the top in owner satisfaction year after year.

Porsches may be sexy but are extremely expensive, temperamental and spend a whole lot of time on the DL.

Better hope Adley is not a Porsche.

    PS: Nissan sucks.

Ive said it before. I mean no disrespect. I work daily in the IT field and with hundreds of CISCO manufacture devices, so my fingers are trained by the repetition of typing that over and over.

But the human being, Chance Sisco, is not a device. So there is no excuse.

I’m not worried about the catching situation. I think both Catchers have upside with their bats, and nobody runs anymore. Severino is a solid “everyday” Catcher at this point.

The defensive value of catchers is far greater than throwing out base stealers

It’s actually worse than it looks. Home plate ump Ron Kulpa called the pitch strike three, and then signaled HBP and sent Comforto to first base. This has nothing to do with umpire judgment— by rule, if the pitch is a strike then it can’t also be a HBP. After the game Kulpa admitted to a pool reporter that he misapplied the HBP rule, and that Comforto should have been out on strikes. If the Marlins protest the game by all rights it should be upheld and the game resumed with two outs in the 9th.

Seems the HP ump would have overruled the Cyclops (or whatever cute nickname MLB will refer to its robotic strikezone camera) anyhow, so the problem of a human ump misapplying a basic rule would not be prevented nor overturned by a robo-ump.

And don’t allow the players to wear body armor that makes them feel comfortable enough to lean in and get HBP.

If Conforto thought there was a decent chance he fractures his arm, he doesn’t lean into that pitch.

The problem is with the "armor" in the strike zone. The helmet was a good safety improvement -- and it's out of the strike zone. Same goes for shin pads: they are outside of the strike zone and a very, very good equipment improvement.

But I would be fine with outlawing elbow pads.

Mountcastle pulled up on his dive when Mullins streaked in front of him. That much was obvious.

He still dove though. And he never would have caught that ball because he ran so slowly towards it.

  13. As much as we are enjoying bashing Mountcastle for his poor defense -- the jog and dive in the fifth inning would have been a triple or inside the park HR if Mullins hadn't caught it and the play in the sixth when he let a catchable ball drop in and then threw it wildly back to the infield allowing the runner on first to advance were both ridiculous. But on that diving miss behind shortstop, Galvis should have been settled under it. Instead, Galvis froze at contact, then turned to his left towards centerfield and got completely spun around as the ball fell to what would have been over his right shoulder. Doesn't make Mountcastle's defense better but Galvis should have been camped out under that popup.

    Other than Adley?  Nope.

When I said the two current catchers were the best options currently in the system, I was acknowledging that Adley is not currently being considered for a roster spot by the front office at this moment in time. Both of us know that we will be waiting for a while on his debut. I agree with you that the Orioles are gaming his service time. And they actually may believe he has to prove more in the minors, regardless of how you or I feel about that.

See, now you are just putting words in my mouth.  It's 1st and 2nd 1 out in the 8th trailing 7-3.  If you get a 2B there  it might be 7-5 with a man one 2nd.  But Santander just hits it foul.  Big difference in your chances of coming back.

Now just to clarify.  I never said it was easy.  But you have convert things like that if you want comeback from a 4 run deficit late in the game (8th inning).

    I was being snarky.

But I was not putting words in your mouth. There are some other posters on here who are very willing to say, "You think..." and "According to you..." even when we have never made claims that they ascribe to us. That's not me

I never said it was easy.  I said when you are down 4 you have to convert those.  Because it's hard to comeback down 4 runs, especially late in the game.

I'm sure that if he had it to do all over again, he would have kept it fair and hit a homerun. /s

Santander got a pitch to hit and couldn't  keep it fair.  When you are down 4 you have to convert those.

It's like they say: hitting a baseball is the easiest thing to do in pro sports.

How is this relevant to my post?

If it were so easy to "convert" foul balls into fair balls, hitting would be the easiest thing to do in pro sports. But it doesn't work that way.
