  1. I thought the first base one was a little suspect. They had Davis getting like 150 at bats and being worth -0.6 WAR. That doesn't sound too crazy, but what if he doesn't get that many at bats? What if he doesn't get any? They were relatively high on Mountcastle and Mancini. I think by their own projections, the O's would have a top 50% 1st base unit if Davis doesn't play.

  2. Travis Lakins Sr. really impressed me last season. They used him in a lot of different situations, he could go multiple innings, and he finishd the season with a 2.80 ERA.

I like this stat too, in 2020 he faced 116 batters (mostly at OPACY). He allowed just 2 HRs.

    People keep saying this.

Does he have a reputation as a clubhouse leader/mentor type?

I'm not saying he's not but just because someone is experienced doesn't mean they are willing to assume that type of role or are suited for it.

You know, I'm not really sure. A few articles popped up on bleacher report about him being a leader in the clubhouse for the Mariners over the years. One about him buying his catcher a rolex after his perfect game... But I'm no expert on Felix.

I think what is clear is his track record and his love for baseball. I'm hoping that he'll be a valuable pressence for the young pitchers.

  4. Wow I was excited about this when I thought it was just a salary dump. Now it looks even better.

So if you look into your crystal ball, is this guy going to be the opening day second baseman in 2022?

The $50 million Colorado is sending St Louis for Arenado has to be the highest, or damn near close to it

It would suck to be a Rockies fan. They made the playoffs in 2017 but lost the wild card game. They made it in 2018 but got swept in the division series. Now they're tearing it all down.

At least the O's made it to the ALCS in our recent run of relevance.

  6. Even if its just a salary dump, this seems like good news. Wonder how much the Angels will be paying?

Cobb finishes his dissapointing Oriole tenure with the following stats:

    3 Seasons, 41 GS, 5.10 ERA, 1 CG, 217.0 IP, 86 ERA+, 1.419 WHIP, 1.8 bWAR

When is Hardy eligible for the Os HOF?  He has to get in immediately, right?

I'm really excited for some of the Orioles greats from the 2012-2016 Golden Age to get inducted into the O's Hall of Fame.

    Jones

    Markakis

    Hardy

    Machado

    Britton

    Buck

Anyone else who should make it? Anyone on this list not deserving? I know Manny left the team at 25, but I think he still deserves it.

  8. Why did Toronto give Semien 18 million for one year? Can someone explain to me why this is not an overpay? Do they think they're going to win the WS in 2021?

    .747 career OPS

    .679 OPS in 2020

    Career 105 OPS+

I know he balled out in 2019, but I'm struggling to make sense of that deal.

  9. Yankees signed Wojo.

"[Nightengale] Pitcher Asher Wojciechowski, 32, has been invited to the #Yankees major-league camp this spring on a minor-league deal that pays him $750,000 if he makes it to the big leagues. He pitched last year for the #Orioles, and has a career 9-15 record and 5.95 ERA in 57 games, 34 starts"

In 2020 the average MLB reliever had 9.4 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9.  So eight and three are just okay.

(Weird observation: last year relievers walked more batters than starters.  That has to be the first time in 150 years of history that happened.  Most years it's not remotely close. Even in 2019 starters were ahead by 600 walks. In 2010 starters walked almost 4000 more batters.)

    That is interesting.

Most of Shepherd's 2019 innings were as a starter, so I was just comparing those strikeout numbers to the other O's starters that year. Guess we don't have a lot of strikeout guys though:

    2019 Starters (with at least 3 starts) - K/9:

    Dylan Bundy- 9.0

    Asher Wojo- 8.7

    Chandler Shepherd- 8.1

    David Hess- 7.7

    Ty Blach- 7.4

    Jimmy Yacabonis- 7.2

    John Means- 7.0

    Andrew Cashner- 6.2

    Dan Straily- 6.2

    Aaron Brooks- 5.9

    Alex Cobb- 5.8

    Thomas Eshelman- 5.5

    Gabriel Ynoa- 5.4

Undersold on this board is the fact that Toronto is a VERY large market with VERY rich ownership. At least that's my recollection. We're really going against 3 financial juggernauts and the most efficient franchise in the sport. Tough division.

Yea I know what you mean. For the last few years I've been thinking/hoping that the O's would be competitive again by 2022, maybe 2023. The Blue Jays' ascent could really throw a wrench in that.

  12. I think Valdez makes the opening day roster.

On a different note, what happened to Chandler Shepherd? I know the O's cut him, but did he rejoin the organization? Sign on elsewhere? Despite the inflated ERA in 2019, I thought he had some potential as a long reliever.  8.1 SO9/2.8 BB9

I think your definition of a core player is stricter than some people’s.   I agree Santander doesn’t meet your definition.

Yea I agree. By those standards, the only "core players" from the 2012-2016 Orioles were:

    Machado, Jones, Davis, and Britton.

Personally, I think a "core player" is more like someone who can give you around 2 WAR annually, with the potential to make an All Star team at least once. From the 2012-2016 O's, that would mean adding people like Markakis, Hardy, Weiters, Schoop, and O'Day to the list.

That's pretty much what I think Santander will do over the next four years. And I hope we keep him.
