I think the “veteran leadership” we’d get from Means is a bit overblown.  He’s thrown 10 more big league innings than Dean Kremer, while making 3 more big league appearances and one fewer big league start.   He’ll probably be behind Kremer in all three categories by the time he takes the mound this year.

That said, I’m certainly hoping that a brief delay to his season is the only hiccup he’ll have this year health-wise, and that he pitches as well as he has in past seasons.

That's fair. And I certainly don't know how these pitchers feel about each other behind closed doors. But I do feel like Means might have a bit more gravitas in the clubhouse than Kremer.

He's almost three years older. He debuted two seasons before Kremer. He's started two opening days. He's been an All Star. He finished runner-up for the AL ROY. At the very least, his ceiling is higher.

  2. I'm not saying he'll be our MVP, but I'll go with John Means.

I think if he could return to the rotation and give us 20-25 starts with like a 3.91 ERA it would be huge for this team. He'd give us a lefty. He'd give us some veteran leadership. He'd help to stabilize the rotation. He's a fan favorite. I think a lot of people are writing him off too soon.

Might say something about Ramon Urias' value.

Yea maybe. I think Urias is definitely worth more, but it may show the demand for glove-y, versatile infielders isn't that strong.

Urias is almost three years younger.  He's been worth 5.4 rWAR over the past two seasons. Urshela has been worth 3.9 WAR over the past two seasons.

  4. Tigers sign Gio Urshela to a one year, $1.5 million deal.

Seems like a bargain to me. The 32 year old was worth 6 DRS at third according to Fielding Bible in 2023. That was second best in the AL. He has a career .745 OPS and made like 8.5 million last season.

Guess he is coming off a down year with some injuries, but still. Not a bad move for a team like Detroit.

  5. Cool stat: Hyun Jin Ryu has the highest WAR (20.1) of any Korean pitcher in history. Second highest WAR of all Korean players, behind Shin Soo Choo.

Looking through his stats, he put together a real nice career. All Star. Two top-3 finishes in Cy Young voting. 3.27 ERA over 1055.1 IP. Led the NL in ERA and ERA+ in 2019...

A real legend of Korean baseball.

He has a very similar profile to John Means. Might be dreaming here, but I'd love to see Means put up similar numbers as Ryu in his age 30-36 seasons.

  6. I like Ryu too. Been thinking he would make sense all off-season. I wonder if he wants to keep pitching in the US, though. Hasn’t been much noise from his camp.

Bauer seems like a scumbag. I’ll pass.

Some weird takes in this thread about that situation. As a man myself, I think it’s pretty clear that “society’s gender double standards” affect women much more harshly than men. Of course there are issues that affect men worse, but pretending we’re the victims of modern society and culture is an embarrassing take.

  7. 2021 Mullins was so awesome.

    (Fantastic post, btw)

I think you make a great point about how it took each of them a few years to establish themselves in the majors. People here can be a bit prospect-obsessed. Sometimes guys seem shocked or outraged at the idea that players like Hays or Urias could be getting regular ABs in 2024. But that's not crazy at all. You need a mix of experience and young talent. Not everyone is going to take off like a rocket once they reach the bigs.

  8. I think Mayo and Holiday will both start in AAA. I think we'll see a lot of rotating lineups and matchups early on.

The best defensive second baseman last year was Ramon Urias.

Fielding Bible said he was worth 4 DRS in 133 innings at 2B.

Westburg was worth 3 DRS in 324 innings at 2B.

Frazier was worth -4 DRS in 948 innings at 2B.

Urias has a .758 OPS against righties, but only a .686 OPS against lefties.

Westburg has a .786 OPS against lefties, but only a .676 OPS against righties.

I don't think it'll be a pure platoon, but this is why I see Urias fitting into this infield in 2024.

  9. I've been banging this drum for a while now, but here goes again:

The Rays will finish in fourth place in 2024 and miss the postseason.

I think it's going to be a dogfight all year between New York and Baltimore. I think Toronto will hang around for most of the season and then settle into third place and possibly the last wild-card spot.

I think Boston will finish last. I think most Boston fans would agree, too.

  10. Great post. Glad to have this.

Personally, I do think they'll "play games" with the service time. At least a bit. I don't see Mayo or Holiday making it on the opening day roster. I could also see them having Kjerstad crack the opening day mix, but trying to hold off on Cowser if all is going well up in Charm City.

  11. Tanner Scott was a top 10 relief pitcher in baseball in 2023. A legitimate star. He won NL Reliever of the Month in September. He was worth more rWAR than Bautista or Cano.

He ranked 1st out of all pitchers in the NL for Win Probability Added. Blake Snell ranked 2nd and won the NL Cy Young.

After the first month or so of the season, Jorge Mateo was the worst qualified hitter in major league baseball.

  12. "Adam Jones headlines the 2048 Hall of Fame class. Once a prominent center fielder, he went on to manage the Baltimore Orioles from 2030-2042. They won the World Series three times during his managerial tenure and he was twice named AL Manager of the Year. He is beloved by the city of Baltimore for his work on and off the field."
