The only person who seems to make this an issue is Buster. Does Mussina even care? Also, every Oriole with a retired number has a connection to the glory years. All with the possible exception of Murray were well known outside of Baltimore as well. Mussina was a very good Oriole, but he's not an icon as the others were. Is he more important in Orioles history than other notable pitchers such as McNally, Flanagan, or even Tippy Martinez? I don't think so. He's in the Orioles Hall of Fame and rightfully so. That's all that's warranted.

I can't argue against his demotion, but I wonder if having him pitch in long relief when he was recalled would have been more beneficial. I still think that helps young pitchers become acclimated to MLB. It's just not done anymore.

I've been an Orioles fan since the 71 World Series. I've come to accept five man rotations and the fact that starting pitchers are pulled at 100 pitches, but I really don't understand current bullpen usage. Irvin was acquired because his ability to pitch late in games. When Wells had to leave after 5 innings, why not have Irvin pitch the rest of the game or at least until match up time in the 8th/9th? Regardless of the outcome, we would have a fresh bullpen for the Jays series. It seems to me that no relief pitchers pitch more than 2 innings at time. The only times relievers pitched more than two innings this season were Wells in relief of Bradish in Texas and Hall during the Detroit doubleheader. We always seem to be short on available relievers even with an 8 man pen. That makes no sense. Voth & Baumann should be pitching 2-3 innings regularly, especially Voth. He doesn't handle inherited runners. Has the long relief pitcher disappeared?

That was standard operating procedure not that long ago. If it works, he can go to the rotation. If not, he seemed to succeed in short relief in September.
