I don't like this answer, but Owings has played the outfield during his career as well. Defensively there is no good option at backup outfielder now with McKenna gone.

Whew! Gotta get that bat in the lineup!

Jean Carmona was the junior piece of the Schoop trade, acquired with Jonathan Villar and Luis Ortiz, who are no longer with our organization.    When we acquired him, Carmona was an 18-year old playing in the Pioneer League, which was equivalent to the Appalachian League, somewhere between the GCL and the NY-Penn League.    We didn’t have a team at that level, so we pushed him to (then short season A) Aberdeen in the NYP.   He wasn’t ready, and hit a miserable .226/.280/.301.    They tried it again in his age 19 season, with no improvement: .224/.290/.271.   Though he was still only 19, I think most people wrote him off.

Fast forward past the lost 2020 season.  Carmona started 2021 in extended spring training, not a good sign.  But when Gunnar Henderson was promoted to (now Hi A) Aberdeen, Carmona took his slot at Delmarva.

So far, the results have been decent: .306/.358/.367 in 14 games.   Not a lot of power, but at 21 he’s holding his own in low A as the second youngest player on the team (to Hernaiz).

So, back to the thread title: is there still time for Jean Carmona to be a prospect?

Thanks for the great detail/recap! Sounds promising. Bowie & Delmarva struggling too.

He's been dominating. He's not going to dominate every time out.

He should not be rushed. People calling for that are misguided. Elias should have targeted better stopgaps and this team would be much better imo.

I hope Nevin isn’t part of the youth movement.  I want good players for that.

He deserved the chance by earning it, I like that. Let’s give him some time & see what he does. Def not blown away by any Elias trades so far though. Bradish best trade? Liked Mateo waiver claim. Pedro. Santander/ Wells picks. He needs to be evaluating existing prospects and the ones they feel won’t make it, trade for assets. That’s what good orgs do, no?

First of all, this is really good research and I always like being presented with some facts, rather than rhetoric.

I will say that the story hasn’t necessarily been written yet on all these guys, especially the high school guys from 2016-17.   I haven’t gone through the list in detail, but at some point I will.

I generally agree with your conclusion.   I do think it depends a bit on exactly what your opinion is about the gap in talent between one guy and the next, and what it is they are demanding in salary.  You wouldn’t overlook a large gap in talent to save $500 k; if it’s very close to a toss-up in your opinion, then maybe you do.

Depends immensely on each draft class immensely. But also baseball is hard and the odds are against you & those odds are even less in later rounds so why not take the BPA. I wish the Ravens would draft for Elias.

There is one move in the next few hours to make room for Bradish.  And two that will coming off the 28 man roster when it is reduced to 26 in four days.

I think Lakins is optioned today.

On Tuesday I think Owings  will be DFA'd and one of Fry or Baumann will be optioned. It could be that both pitchers are optioned and Vespi is promoted to be the 2nd lefty in the pen.

The only player that will be put on waivers is Owings.  The other three can stay in the organization and work out their problems at AAA.  Vespi would take Owings 40 man roster spot if the O's feel he is ready for the majors.

    Owings & Odor please

My guess is Travis Lakins Sr will be optioned to make room for Bradish.

Elias would have to be ready to call up someone  from the minors who is not of the 40 man roster to DFA Fry.  And Stowers and Grayson are probably several weeks away from a call up.

Currently Perez and Akin are lefty relievers with Fry.   I guess at some point they could call up Vespi to take Fry's place.  Lowther has pitched so poorly I don't expect to see him in the majors until he pitches well in the minors for a while.

    Lowther lit up again tonight.
