Looks like maybe Adam Jones has hung ‘em up, though he hasn’t expressly said so.

If the Orioles wanted to make up the past few years to the fans, or at least a small amount, sign AJ to a contract and send him off in Baltimore style! Might be my favorite Oriole of all time.

I will miss Sulser more than Scott.   Sulser was nothing special, but he was reasonably consistent and reliable last year.   Scott has been so inconsistent in his career.  He’d come into a game and usually within 3-4 pitches you’d know whether this was one of those days when he would dominate, or one where he’d just be all over the place.  People kept hoping he’d be the next Andrew Miller if he could harness his stuff, but he never did in his 4 seasons here.  Maybe the light bulb will come on in Miami, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over losing him.

As to the return, to me it’s nothing amazing but it is fair value.   We’re giving up bullpen innings today for possible contributions in a few years.   We’ll probably know this year if Velez is a potential contributor or not; the Dominican OF is 3-4 years away at least and it will be several years before the Comp B pick has any chance to contribute.

Note to wildcard: if you don’t like the trade now, I really doubt the PTBNL is going to change your mind.

Nick Neidert is a decent piece IMO if that tends up to be accurate.

  3. Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with this podcast.

Not sure if anyone else listens to the Orioles Locked on Podcast but big fan of it. The guy that does it is a smart cookie and always enjoy his takes.

He is a bit concerned about losing Culser. Take a listen:

Always good to hear other takes//opinions.

As another poster on here astutely mentioned, if Nick Neidert is the other piece, he might be a rotation/piggy back piece. I think that adds to the attractiveness of the trade for me.

Maybe, but they have two open spots now and have four days to clear more space. Perhaps it is based on performance of the players involved. If Scott and Sulser perform to a certain level, we get a player from a short "A list," and if not, we get a player from "B list." Could be the guy they just DFA'd, RHP Neidert. Sort of a RH version of Lowther. If he clears waivers, they outright him and send him to Baltimore.

If he gets Neidert too (seems spot on, perfect fit), that’s a good trade. Hats off to him. You do that deal all day long.

Awesome post, thank you, great insights. Runs to google for Neidert.

I mean we were all alive last year.  Presumably.

How much worse do you expect the pitching to be this year?

I actually expect them to be better.

Alive is debatable :) I think worse bc I think injuries/lack of depth is going to force many waiver claims/4a fodder starts. If not, we are going to hurt the development of arms. Elias isn’t hard to figure out. He might be improving other aspects, but the starting pitching determines wins in baseball more than anything else and ours is bad, real bad and that’s with no injuries (I promise, there will be many).

I am with Corn here, going to be brutal to watch.

The O's actually traded away 3 picks.  I forgot about the one they included in the Norris trade.  When you add in the 1st round picks lost lost for Ubaldo and Gallardo, the loss in potential prospects was huge.

They used their 2013 pick on outfielder Josh Hart, who is in his third season at High-A Frederick after injuries have slowed his career. Later that summer, they packaged their 2014 pick with prospects to acquire pitcher Bud Norris from the Houston Astros. At the outset of the 2015 season, the pick was sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with reliever Ryan Webb.

In 2016, they sent the pick, along with beleaguered left-hander Brian Matusz to the Atlanta Braves for a pair of minor league pitchers, including right-hander Brandon Barker.

Yeah, because the Os really knock it out of the park with their top picks.

Like the deal. Keep adding to the prospect and lottery ticket pile.

Sulser was always frustrating to me. Overall good numbers last season but it's seems every time he was brought in to pressure situation, he faltered. As far as Scott, disappointed to see him go but one wonders if he is what he has shown to be. Opens up two spots on the 40 as well

At some point, you need to trade some of those tickets or most will become worthless
