I call them as I see them and while I support Elias and how he's rebuilding this franchise so far, the fact that the Orioles are going to Arbitration with their homegrown top starter (Means) and All-star (Mancini) over a combined $1.1 million difference is embarrasing.

If the number are right, Means wants $3.1 and the Orioles offered $2.7. Really, a $400 K difference for a guy who threw a no-hitter last year?

As for Mancini, it's a little more tricky because honestly, he's more valuable to the Orioles because of who he is rather than what he brings to the lineup at this point. Saying that, there's what, a 700K difference? The Orioles could not meet him halfway on that?

For a team with the lowest payroll in baseball, it's embarrassing to be going to arbitration with your two All-star over $1.1 million.

This is BS. Sometimes it's not always about winning and getting guys for as cheap as you can. I really hope both players win their cases because it's ridiculous that the Orioles could not get this done without arbitration.

Kudos to you for calling it out! Amen! This org is a disgrace and we deserve better!

The Amazing Clefkin, ladies and gentlemen...  Retroactive Clairvoyant.

Were you aware that Kjerstad was deeply surprised when Os selected him at that spot? Doesn’t sound like a lot of deep research & coordination was done with his camp. My understanding is he was expecting another franchise/city to take him and even looked at places for that other franchise. Maybe, just maybe that lets us know there is a bigger problem here and with the Elias way. But I guess it doesn’t matter because Elias has been so wildly successful in returning winning to this franchise…oh wait…he intentionally tanks and makes us a joke of mlb while refusing to take the bpa in the drafts. He also, in the last draft, took another corner OF versus a stud SS, for a franchise void of a good SS prospect. Strong up the middle must not be important to him….But hey, what’s the rush? Only been 38 years since last world championship, keep making excuses for this pathetic franchise instead of demanding a higher standard/product is not the solution.

He was an awful pick then and looks even worse now. He wasn’t the right pick, period, which is why this was avoidable & maddening, nothing to do with these injuries.

How is it an overpay if he pitches to a 3.55 ERA (taking his FIP number)? if Elias and his people think he improvements are for real, then it's not an overpay. Do I think he's going to pitch to a 3.55 ERA in the AL East, probably not, but if he can pitch to a 4.50 ERA and make 32 starts and give them 150-180 innings then he's worth that money easy.

Besides, we know they can afford the contract so who really cares? This comes down to whether their assessment is right or not. That's what we'll find out.

Agreed on that…if, but why that much money? He didn’t exactly have teams lined up for his services, right? We can’t any major league contracts but he’s spending $7m on this guy that wasn’t in high demand? Doesn’t make sense.

Oh yeah, there's still time. Of course everything you hear in spring training, especially early on should be taken with a grain of salt, but he was looking pretty good. The good thing is, he doesn't seem to be someone that'll give up.

I read a decade of excuses on Hobgood too. Most thought Tyler Maztek was best pick, he’s not a superstar but likely was the pick and helps anchor the World Champion Braves bullpen (was traded). Sometimes the composite of experts is better than 1 guy thinking he is smarter than everyone else.  Elias is way better than Joe Jordan but you take the best player when you are rebuilding and haven’t won in nearly 40 years, hard stop.

i had heard Elias said Lyles did something different in September and that's what they are banking on. Lyles pitched to a 2.87 ERA and 3.55 FIP over his 5 games holding batters to a .215/.292/.346/.638 slash.

So what did he do differently?

Looking at Baseball Savant, it appears he dropped his fastball usage way down to 29.3% (47.4% in April) and replaced that with a sinker at 17.1% (1.5% in April).

But the biggest change was in his slider where he increased his horizontal movement to 15 inches in September, 3 inches more than in August and 9 inches more than in April. He accordingly increased the usage of his slider to 26.1% (17.8% in August). Batter slashed just .138/.145/.172/.255 against his slider in September.

the effectiveness of his slider made all his pitches play up a bit as hard hit % and barrel% all went down and swing and miss went up significantly on the slider, curveball, cutter and change.

So if Lyle's slider is for real, the Orioles may have found themselves a bargain.

So you overpay by 5/7 fold for that? Appreciate the detailed info but the price tag still doesn’t add up. Maybe he sells opioids like Matt Harvey.

I agree the Orioles’ pitching has the potential to be really, really bad — as bad as last year, which is awful.

But at the same time, I think you kind of have to give the younger pitchers the opportunities and see whether 1-2 of them can show significant improvement.

It’s disgusting. It’s negligence. Fans should be upset, a smack in the face. Wasn’t it Elias himself who said we wanted pitchers knocking down the door from AAA? Hard to do that when you don’t have enough starters…we all want to see the kids play but they will get hurt (more so this year probably with the lockout) so the depth just comes from more prospects which hurts their development…vicious irresponsible cycle that really hurts the farm overall.

The team I can’t figure out is the Guardians.   They’d actually be a contender if they spent a modest amount of money.

As to Pedersen’s tweet, perhaps buyers aren’t lining up to buy these teams.

What??? You clearly have no idea what’s going on with ownership. I assure you, there is plenty of interest for ANY professional sports franchise. Guaranteed money.

This post is spot on. Professional leagues need to hold crap franchises like the Orioles & Dan Snyder’s  accountable or force them to sell.

Tired of endless excuses, these fan bases deserve better, their cities deserve better.

I'll take a crack (although far too early to do so) and I will undoubtedly be wrong on several guys.

C- Chirinos, Nottingham (though could be Bemboom or someone else, just for the month until it's Adley)

    1B/DH- Moutcastle, Mancini

    2B/SS/3B- Odor, Mateo, Urias, Gutierrez

OF- Mullins, Hays, Santander, McKenna, Stewart

SP- Means, Lyles, Zimmermann, Lowther, Akin (? This is really a crap shoot here)

RP- T.Wells, Sulser, Scott, Lopez, Fry, Tate, Bautista, Lakins, Baker, Kremer (the last 4 could be interchangable, I added Kremer given his starter background as someone who could give innings, but it could be someone else).

The SP is terrifying per usual. Elias’ guarantee to tank. Problem is, some of these kids belong in AAA still so by not signing stopgaps you aren’t exactly rebuilding but just sabotaging.

It's weird how several people on here cling to something and manage to insert it in almost every topic.

I would guess that most here are non-committal about Elias rather than thinking he's a genius.

I think most just like to argue :)

I tracked the Josh Rodgers move last year. I thought it was a mistake coming off a major surgery. Should have given him more time.

Why are we assuming he’d be in high demand? He hasn’t proven much, he’s developed a good farm system but he’s done that by going nuclear at the major league level and going out of his way to field an extraordinarily bad team for many years with no end in sight. Honestly, a monkey could do that job. The draft picks have been nice but, IMO, he isn’t that great at that. He consistently drafts under slot and everyone acts like he’s a genius for it. The international focus is more of a positive for the owners willingness to invest rather than Elias.

Anyways, all that to say…Elias is overrated if anyone thinks other teams are chomping at the bit to get him on board. I think he stays in Baltimore throughout the rebuild and years of contention.

Elias is really only thought as a great talent by this board ( I would like to enter Frobby’s post as evidence😂😂😂). But having said that, like so many past GMs, do you believe he has full control? Of course not, that’s why a fair evaluation is nearly impossible.

I think his dream job is either Houston or his hometown Nats, but unlikely Rizzo retires anytime soon, he’s a great GM and unlikely going anywhere in the near future. I know nothing about the current Houston GM.

But agreed 110%, he hasn’t proven much other than he refuses to take bpa in the first round (with the exception of Adley).
