2017 16th round pick (488): Logan Allen - LHP - University HS

Allen has never wowed anyone with his size or stuff. All he's done is flat-out pitch his way onto the prospect radar, throwing for Team USA's 18 and under team in international competition and into top six round consideration. Allen succeeds with fringy or average stuff across the board, but all of it plays up because of his control, his feel for pitching, and his competitive nature. While he's touched the low-90s on occasion, he typically sits in the 87-90 mph range. His ability to throw it to both sides of the plate at will is a huge weapon for him. So is his changeup, which should be an above-average pitch for him, one he throws with good arm speed and that has fade and sink to it. He'll throw it to righties and lefties. His curve is average. Allen uses a funky delivery that adds deception, but he repeats it and fills up the strike zone at will. At 5-foot-11, Allen isn't exactly the projectable high school arm teams covet. But his pitchability combined with his plus mound presence and competitiveness give him the look of an over-achiever, one who could go early enough for him to enter pro ball instead of heading to Florida International University.

PG Grade: 10

Logan Allen is a 2017 LHP with a 6-0 170 lb. frame from Deltona, FL who attends University HS. Medium athletic build, has room to get stronger. Big hip coil to start his delivery, stays balanced over the rubber well, long arm action in back coming through to a 3/4's arm slot, repeats his mechanics very well. Upper 80's fastball, topped out at 90 mph and has been up to 92 at other events this summer, can spot his fastball to all quadrants of the zone. Outstanding feel for his change up with arm speed and lots of fading action. Throws both a curveball and slider and can manipulate shape and velocity. All his pitches come out of the same release slot and can be thrown to spots. Extremely polished pitcher with four weapons in the ability to use them. Allowed 1 run in 61 innings this spring. Excellent student, verbal commitment to Alabama State. Selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Allen enters districts with an 8-0 record and a 0.15 earned run average with 94 strikeouts in 47 innings. He also leads the team at the plate with a .439 batting average and team highs in hits (36), RBI (19) and doubles (13).

In three seasons he’s compiled a 28-2 record with 331 strikeouts in 197 innings pitched.

“Don’t let his mild manners and being a good student fool you,” Martello said. “He’s an old-fashioned ball player. He has an intensity about him, and he’s really a competitor when he’s out there.”

This kid is a competitor. Seen him over the years, and my son's team beat University in the state 9A finals. He threw a no-hitter in the semi final, and he hit a homerun as well. Not much projection there, no, but he's a winner.
