  1. Neither have a lot of range for sure. It was why Urias was being looked at more as a 2B who can play SS on occasion vs an everyday SS. Leyba is just overweight and was never a great defender in the first place.
  2. Yeah, this about giving a guy a chance when they assessed him as having none with the Orioles any longer. Saying that, he's been pretty good over his last nine appearances (1.80, .216 OAVG) in AAA so who knows? The Orioles need to test out some other arms and at his age, he's not going to have real trade value. He was going to be a minor league free agent anyways so it's doubtful he would return.
  3. Leyba has been accessed and found wanting. Worth the shot, but he's an overweight below average defender who hasn't shown an ability to hit major league pitching.
  4. Anyways..back to Neustrom...
  5. Agreed, let's get the subject back to Westburg. Westburg is a priority player over everyone above him (AAA and AA) at SS but there is value in letting guys like Grenier and Martin eventually get their ABs. Martin should be moved around a lot since he's probably looked at as a utility guy though there is still some possibilities he could hit enough and end up at 2B. Martin is similar to Diaz, Hays, Santander and Stewart in that he's pretty injury prone. Westburg is 23 years old so it would not hurt for him to get some PAs in AA over the rest of this season. AS it was pointed out, if 2020 had occurred, the hope would be that he would have started 2021 in AA so it's probably time to give him those PAs there. Watching Westburg, he seems much more comfortable at SS than 3B and he has the tools to stay there. Grenier is more steady overall, but Westburg has the better bat potential by far. It would not hurt Grenier to get some looks at 2B or even some looks at 3B on occasion since his bat may preclude him from being an everyday guy.
  6. McCoy is an organizational guy. He might stick around and get lucky and get a cup of coffee somewhere, but he's not a priority play amongst the current group of SS prospects.
  7. These two will definitely not be additions. After the trade deadline comes and goes I have an article to put on Rule 5 eligible players and the affect on the 40-man. It just made sense to wait until the trade deadline shakes out.
  8. After doing a little more digging, it seems that Neustrom does need to be protected this year before the Rule 5 draft. I was under the impression it was four full seasons for college players, not four seasons including their first season after being drafted. With that said, I still think they will keep him in the minors through most of this season but if he stays hot, they could decide to make a move and bring him up.
  9. Martin should be used like he could be used at the major league level, all over. If he's going to have a major league career, it's probably going to be as a utility guy.
  10. As I discussed in Neustrom's thread, he doesn't need to be protected this year and has not hit lefties well, so that could be two reasons why he may stay at AAA the rest of the year. I know I'd rather see him than Stewart right now, but I'm guessing they won't use a 40-man roster spot needlessly this offseason.
  11. He needs to be protected anyways this offseason so yes, if Fry or Scott are moved, I could see them giving Vespi a shot as he's the best left-handed relief pitcher they have in he upper minors.
  12. He could, but like I said, he's been slumping with the stick of late so it would not be a great time to move him up offensively.
  13. The Orioles don't need to protect Neustrom this year on the 40-man roster so that could be a reason to keep him down. While there is a lot of deadweight on the current 40-man, they still have to look if it's worth putting him on there or not. He's been on a heater for the last two months and has hit the ball as well as anyone in the upper minors, but he doesn't have good numbers against lefties so they may want to give him more time in AAA to work on that as well. He's been a nice story this year for sure.
  14. I think Mancini ends up dealt either in the next few days or the offseason. But if they are, it would mean more LF time for Mountcastle.

    Kevin Smith 2021

His command has been off for a while now. His slider has been less of a weapon against AAA hitters and I'd love to see the movement and spin rate numbers compared to the AA ball.
  16. No, Vespi is a 89-91 guy that may touch 92 but his big weapon is a sweeping curveball that is tough to hit from either side of the plate.
  17. The issue may be the playing time at Bowie. Grenier is there and although Westburg is a priority play at SS over everyone right now (though sharing with Henderson), I think Genier has shown at at least defensively that he's a prospect and needs to play SS everyday. Grenier has been cold with the stick of late slashing .205/.333/.301/.635 so they may not think his stick is ready for AAA. At 3B they have Dorrian is a fringe prospect, but one that has put up a decent power and on base skills despite the low average. He's slashing .241/.378/.473/.851 and has improved his throwing of late from 3B. In theory you could send Dorrian to Norfolk and then promote Westburg and have Westburg play 3B when he's not playing SS and then move Grenier to 2B when he's playing SS. Right now they have playing time for everyone at the positions they want them. Personally, I'd be fine with moving Dorrian to AAA and promoting Westburg to AA, but I will say that Grenier is the best defensive shortstop in the system and you want him playing SS almost every game.
  18. Really nice to see Henderson crush a PULL homer.
  19. Yeah, I thought the same thing. For a guy with limited experience there before this year, he looks like a plus defender at 1B.
  20. I will be very surprised if Stowers is not playing in the big leagues at some point next year if he stays healthy.
  21. I know you love being snarky, but considering he missed an entire season last year like everyone else and is now doing well in AA in his first full season in the minor leagues and yes, I would consider him a fast mover.
  22. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=greene000con Command and simple control has been issue most of his career. Makes me wonder if they took all but 2 or maybe 3 pitches away from him and let him focus on them, how good could he be?
  23. But that wasn't what we were talking about. I agree though, there are alot of guys still on this 40-man that could be DFA'd without any concern for the future, but I would guess most last place teams you could say the same thing about. As for Greene, I don't know what to think. He was really good this spring and looked good last night except for the fact he threw five different pitches in two innings of work. He seems like a guy who could do very well with that fastball and changeup and an occasional slider. For the life of me i can't understand what happened in AAA. Why was he used so infrequently? Why was he stretched out over three and four innings or more when he might have some value for a two innings like last night? I really have questions with the development in the minor leagues right now when comes to some pitcher's usage as well as well as the positional jumping around of actual prospects.
