He's never going to be the hitter he was. If he accepts that and makes the necessary changes to become the best hitter he can be right now, maybe he can bring a little value to the team. He'll never hit well enough to justify the contract, but that's no longer the issue. Can he be the best 1B on the team and earn his playing time?
Now that Davis is actually coming out early to work on his swing, maybe they want to give him a chance to learn what he needs to do before throwing him out there.
A few weeks ago on MLB Network Radio, Mike Ferrin asked Jim Duquette if that was his cousin's idea. Duquette said that it wasn't, but that he couldn't say anything else about it.
Between majors, minors and foreign leagues, Alberto has played 52 games at 1B. I'd be fine with starting him there.
An outfield of Smith, Rickard and Mancini with Alberto at 1B and Nunez at DH leaves Mullins and Davis on the bench, along with a catcher.
When Palmer talks about him not even tracking the pitches, it makes me wonder what he's looking at? He can focus in the field, why can't he focus at the plate?
