    You're nuts.

I don't know that I'm a believer in Austin Hays. His BABIP this year is .387 and he's often injured and often struggles coming back from injuries. Plus he's about to start costing more money in arbitration.

If his 2021/2022 is more of an indicator of his true talent, and you can find a team that believes this isn't just a career year for him, I'd send him packing for pitching. At that point he's basically a 2-win OF and I'm sure we can mostly replace that internally.

As for Santander he was basically replacement level/slightly above until last year. We have better defensive options, and he only has one relatively expensive year left before free agency.

Losing either player would be taking a hit this year, but if it allowed us to acquire multiple years of MLB starting pitching through a trade, I'd send one, maybe both of them out.

If only Ben Joyce were in this draft.

I like the idea of taking 3B Brayden Taylor and him being in Bowie this time next year. Just keep doing what we do best. Don’t get cute. Put ourselves in position to always have a loaded group of position players for a 162 season. Then make trades to acquire pitching.

Ben Joyce has a 4.50 ERA this year, and a 5/4 K/BB in limited MLB action. His ERA was worse in AA before the Angels called him up.

    I mean, he's 22, but he's massively overhyped.

Why not?   I don’t think it’s that unusual.  There are a ton of guys hitting in the .340 - .360 range in the International League this year.

I think the poster meant that he won’t hit .350 for a full season in the majors.

    Yeah, I meant MLB.

If Prieto can maintain his average near where it is right now, I think he'd sneak into the back of some top 100 lists.

There's no way he's going to finish a MLB season in which he had significant plate appearances with a .350 average

He can play anywhere if he can keep hitting over .350, but yeah, something like Alberto's 2019 might be a reasonable expectation, except that was Hanser's peak and it might be Prieto's baseline.

Alberto's 2019 season was like 3.5 WAR and he hit .305/.329/.422. It was also the only year he really graded out positively with the glove. If anyone thought that was Prieto's baseline he'd be a top 100 prospect for sure.

Is he capable of a season or three like that at his peak? I'd say it's possible. But I'm guessing for most of his career he'll be the kind of guy we're not going to miss.

Also, note that Hanser Alberto has been worth 4.1 WAR over parts of seven seasons. My guess is Prieto might be a few wins better than that over a similar time frame.

Prieto isn't good enough defensively to make for a good utility infielder. Ortiz would be much better in that role, but I suspect both are future trade assets.

That said, I would like to see Ortiz get some run as the starting SS until Holliday knocks down the door.

Yeah, Prieto is kind of a tweener for me. Not enough glove to be a utility infielder/super sub and not enough power to slide down the defensive spectrum. He reminds me of Hanser Alberto, though I think he could end up a bit better than him.

I'm not all in on O'Hearn just yet, however he's making it hard not to be a believer.

Let's keep in mind that the O's hitting coaches allegedly fixed Mateo and we've all seen how that's played out.  Maybe O'Hearn doesn't regress to what he was, maybe he does.

At the very least, he's earned the right to keep playing so we can find out.

Swings are complex. They may be fixed only to break again soon after.

Now look at O'Hearn's career numbers.  Look at how much rope he got in KC.  Look at how he got a contract with the O's for 1.4M after putting up those numbers.

    Folks are being ridiculous.

I'm not saying no one would give him a chance for O'Hearn money if the Orioles cut him. There's certainly the potential to be better. But I think it's obvious why people are down on him, and given the choice I'd rather go with O'Hearn. Mounty's approach at the plate seems inconsistent with the organization's philosophy. He might do better in a different organization. But Mounty has been trending down and O'Hearn is trending up (albeit in a small sample size).

Assuming he doesn't get demoted he's going to be arb 1 coming off a down year.  He's probably looking at O'Hearn money.

Folks here are oddly down on Mountcastle.  You would think, going by comments here, that he was one of the worst players in the league.

If he qualified, he'd be 127th out of 151 in OPS. He's also a poor defensive first baseman. So far this year, somehow, he's been worth 0.2 WAR. I think it's fair to say he's one of the worst players in the league. Replacement level first basemen aren't exactly exciting players

With Cowser up, should we sell high on Hicks?  Will Hicks be happy being a platoon player or not starting everyday?  A couple of days off a week might actually keep him healthy.  But... with his health, we could trade him while he's not on the IL.

Is anyone buying? He was DFA'd like a month ago.

That said, if anyone offered any kind of interesting prospect for him, I'd print his plane tickets myself. Not to say he doesn't have value to this team, but we can do without him, especially now that Cowser is up
