  1. @Frobby's buddy...Dude, I just won a million dollars! @Frobby ...cool, but have you seen the taxes on this stuff yet? Oh man, they're paying it out over 20 years? Have you even considered the time value of money? And the family issues? Everyone will think you're rich. You'll never go to a bar or restaurant and not be expected to pay the bill again. And all for what, a few bucks after taxes? I'd rather we just find the next Hayden Penn, but with a better baseball name. @Frobby's buddy...But did you hear about the Josh Liranzo kid? What a stud. @FrobbyDon't even get me started man.
  2. I wonder where Wacha will be pitching in August. This is the type of move I'd make if I were a rebuilding team that wanted to supplement my system via the trade deadline.
  3. I just wonder what some of these guys turn into under this player development system. Probably a bunch of studs.
  4. Has to be big performance incentives, right?
  5. I’m shocked, SHOCKED, that all of the message board - and a certain podcaster - hand wringing was much ado about nothing. Reminds me of most sports labor battles where people lament millionaires and billionaires, when all that’s happening is interests negotiating the best deal they can for the side they’re paid to negotiate for.
  6. The Yankees weren't very good last year. I think part of that is because they didn't have a good mix of guys who could hit and play great defense. Obviously, injuries were a big part too. I only mention this because I think Elias has been deliberate in his attempts to build around athletic guys. We don't have a lot of statues in this organization. And would Cease really want a below average outfield behind him? This is my attempt to make this about Cease.
  7. Is it really? Is it wrong to consider the value of adding a #3 or better starter for 2 years (and 180 innings each) as being more valuable than the difference between good and average defense in left field over a maximum of 6 years? I say maximum because of course some other + LFer could show up in the intervening period? Unless I'm getting this wrong, you're essentially hung up on a larger trade over something like 4 outs per year. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/outs_above_average?type=Fielder&startYear=2023&endYear=2023&split=yes&team=&range=year&min=q&pos=7&roles=&viz=hide
  8. I don't think you're wrong, but I think it's easier on a message board to say that we need to make trades than it is to actually do it without trading away our most elite assets. The problem, as we all know, isn't that Elias refuses to get fleeced in a trade (that's not a problem, IMO), it's that we are not in the market to sign free agents (and don't quite have in-house options ready). So we're left in a position where, if a trade is our only option, you're looking at giving up Mayo or Basallo for guys that aren't elite, and one or more of them plus a significant package for guys that are. Hays, Santander, Mateo, Urias, Mountcastle, Norby, Westburg and Ortiz just aren't netting the TOR guy we all want. So, if we're looking at a trade, we're still looking at over paying, but for a #4 starter instead of a #1/2 starter.
  9. Eovaldi would have made more sense, since he was a free agent. I know I wanted him. That said, the Rangers are instructive just how risky their approach was. They paid massive money to DeGrom and Sherzer, a fair amount to Eovaldi and had to trade for Montgomery. And who knew Montgomery would turn into Sandy Koufax? And that's on top of their other expensive signings. I'd say they went all in and were essentially lucky it clicked at the right time. Imagine losing a couple more games over 162 and not even making the playoffs with those committments.
  10. I think Elias knows a lot about our pipeline and isn't about to trade any of them to make people feel better. Definitely not for 1-year rentals, and preferably not for 2-year rentals. I know people are frustrated that we didn't go for it at the last two deadlines, or in those off-seasons. At the same time, we honestly weren't really competitive against Texas. I think we needed two very significant upgrades (one bat, one starter) and the cost would have been extremely high, like we wouldn't have at least 1 of Mayo/Basallo and at least 1 of Cowser/Kjerstad, plus others like Ortiz would have likely had to be included. Just to have a higher probability in what is always a free for all tournament. I tend to trust Elias even though I wish he wasn't quite so conservative. For me, personally, that's because I genuinely see a long run in front of this franchise and I don't want that possibility short-circuited by over paying for rentals.
  11. Not quite. The last time Stowers was in Tony's top prospect list was in 2021. There, Tony said his ceiling was a starting outfielder and occasional all star. I'd wager Tony still believes in the power and OBP. Ok enough in a corner OF position. A lot of k's. So maybe, at this point, the ceiling is second division starter. Still, that power is legit and kind of built for Camden Yards. https://orioleshangout.com/2021/11/02/7-kyle-stowers/
  12. I just watched Dan Snyder sell the Commanders. If anyone can spoil a deal, it's him. You hire an army of tax attorneys and a major bank to walk you through the sale. He has to consider his family, I'm sure. But honestly, a lot of this is dictated by his father's wishes/will. Between that and tax law, it's essentially forcing a sale, IMO. I think that's one thing you take away from the intra-family lawsuit. The only question is the timing being before or after PAs death. Beyond that, the lawyers handle the process.
  13. We serially underestimate what a financial giant the Blue Jays are. There are 3 such giants in this division. Not two. With the Yankees obviously being mega giants. lol I hate that that got Soto more than I hate that the Blue Jays might get Ohtani, to be honest.
  14. What was that old stat people used to pull? It had something to do with prospect failure since Cal Ripken Jr.
  15. #1...there's a chance you got the last word in a SG conversation. Not that he conceded his point, but still, your short time here has produced a success that most of us haven't ever achieved. #2...I don't care about your definitions or anyone else's, I just hope that you're credible and I can read between the lines and think that the O's REALLY like Povich. The alternative is that they're over valuing him because they have a dearth of other pitching talent and/or resources to obtain additional talent. I don't like that alternative.
  16. This was smack dab in the middle of what, 20 years, where the O's didn't produce a single position prospect who stuck in the majors with the O's. It's incredible. Contrast that with Adley, Gunnar, Westburg, Holliday, Kjerstad, Cowser, Mayo, Basallo, Ortiz, Norby, not to mention some pitching success, all over the last few years. After 4 decades of mostly poor results from our minors, we're in a golden age for the Orioles. I sure hope we can sustain this.
  17. Yup. I'm happy he's still here. Maybe if he can stay healthy he can get into a groove and improve how the scouts view him w/r/t future value. Right now they can't think too highly of him, or have really significant doubts about his health, considering he was available for peanuts and nobody took a shot on him. I assume they see him as a 5th outfielder type without real upside. But guys can change their projections. It's happened before, even though it's obviously not easy to do.
  18. So you're saying he's a tax dodger? Damn 1%ers and their low tax rates.
  19. So was Tony LaCava. In fairness, Antholopolous (sp?) was another everyone wanted. He's done ok in Atlanta. Not saying you're wrong, but sports teams often stand out as different for owners. The fan comes out. It's not all about business. Not saying that'll be the case, but there's a chance it will.
  20. I think this news is leaking because it's real. This thread is a low-key way to announce a major celebration. I remember thinking the same thing when Snyder announced he was essentially looking to sell the team. It wasn't this definitive bombshell that a sale would happen. People speculated about his motives a million different ways, but in the end the truth was right there to see. His reign was over. I think the Angelos reign is similarly over.
  21. I wonder if there's an owner in waiting type of deal possible. I think Abe Pollin did that with Ted Leonsis back in the day.
  22. This won't happen, but if the O's signed both Kimbrel and Ed. Rod, it would open up some great options for a big splash trade for a pitcher with more control than Cease.
