Honestly can say I haven’t heard of this dude.

JustD posted something in the amateur draft forum saying he looked pretty electric in her eyes.

I don't know much about this guy in particular, but judging by what you and others have pointed out about the Astros, it stands to reason that there's a chance the O's develop starters without much draft/$$ pedigree. Why not this guy?

Saying that, let's not get ahead of ourselves and see if he can string 3 or 4 good starts together.

Too late, Tony. I'm at a point where I want him to skip Aberdeen altogether!

There seems to be no one in the system that is pitch efficient.

Luis De Leon was, but it is only April. Rust is a very real thing in sports.

That’s the thing.  How long do you have to see it before you know?

Once comfortable, I'd think it'll be apparent in a week or two. We just have the unknown question of how long it'll take a talented baseball lifer to get comfortable at a position that's very similar to what he grew up playing.

It just sounds like most of it is about familiarity. We know he can catch and throw, but his athletic movements are certainly different. Kind of like in football when a left tackle plays right tackle. Similar position, but things are kind of backwards.

I predict we don’t see him before June, barring injuries.  He’ll continue to rake, and the fans will clamor for him on a nightly basis, but they won’t call him up until his defense settles down.  I expect it will, but going from shaky to solid doesn’t happen overnight.

I don't necessarily doubt the June prediction, but I wouldn't be shocked if Holliday quickly cleans up most of his issues at 2B. I actually do think it'll happen almost over night, though you'll need a good sample to know for sure.

  6. There's been a lot of comments, notably including Justin Verlander, about the scourge of arm injuries in the game. The gist of them is that the focus on max velo and max spin rates results in max pressure on the arm and ultimately more injuries.

I'm beginning to feel like the O's approach to player development might eventually work its way up to the majors, where you will rarely see guys even going up to 90-100 pitches. I feels like we're about to begin an era where most pitchers get 1.5 times through the lineup and then turn it over to the next guy.

  7. The young guys will be better than about 5-6 hitters on this team. The slow play of all of this is frustrating. I just hope they figure out how to incorporate all of these guys so they are ready to play most days by September.

We shouldn’t be taking the playoffs for granted.

Hear me out here. If they weren’t lying about service time being an issue, Holliday should be up for the Boston series w/ all righties. Urias/Kemp better heed this. Urias 0-season and an error.

What are the exact details of a Holliday call up IF they ARE IN FACT manipulating service time although I think he win or get top 2 in ROY making the point moot— Can someone elaborate on details of a call up?

Anything, other than purely offensive/trashy, that gets 15 neg rep votes cracks me up enough to get an up vote!

I have no idea if it was a troll job. If so, it worked. If not, it's funny because we all know more or less what's been on this board for months and I guess you don't. Either way, with 17 posts in almost as many years, I chalk this up to not being an internet message board guy and not quite understanding what goes on here.

One thing I learned about DR last day or so is that he really loves 'Baldimore' and wants to give back, unite the community, etc.

As a fan of the O's and Redskins, it's almost like the leagues went out of their way to find rich people who 1) are likeable and 2) agree that career professionals are better at running sports organizations than they are. In that sense, I feel very fortunate for both ownership changes.

The one thing that [slightly] raises my antenna from both ownership groups though is some of the political language I've heard. Don't get me wrong, I'd love if he gives back in the form of supporting youth leagues, ticket giveaways, etc., but I really dislike when my sports teams become connected to political movements. I'm not trying to make any political statement other than I'm happiest when I can view sports and exchange high fives with people who look at the world differently.

And yes, I did mean this is a slight concern. Just something I fear in general.

Yea I can see that and Frobby has been talking about that a while.  He’s not wrong but we just have too many guys and too much talent to keep those guys around, especially as they get expensive.

Well, I think there's a case to be made for each of them individually, but certainly not for all of them collectively.

Personally, I'm not sold on Cowser, Kjerstad, Beavers and Bradfield to be studs. I like them all, but wouldn't be shocked if none of the four becomes a ML stud.

I acknowledge that all could, but I wouldn't really bet on it for any one of them in particular right now. I think that's the point Frobby was trying to make. Just because we have highly rated guys doesn't mean that they'll end up as good as Hays, Mullins and Santander. Those dudes aren't scrubs.

I do hope that at least one of the 4 ends up in the category with the other 5 massive upside dudes.

    This would be great news.

Well, then, you and I are on opposite sides of the aisle, and that is OK.

He’s not at risk of the loss if he declines to sell naming rights, and I would be appalled to see uniforms turn into the kind of things we see on NASCAR drivers.

Probably not, but I think it's very easy to see it costing $250-300 million to keep this team together, with the ramp up to that starting in a few years.

The Braves payroll this year is $225. The Yankees is $300. If we actually try to keep this core together, and they actually perform, it'll be really expensive.

  12. 15 minutes ago, Sports Guy said:

Yea I think the on field in those years will be high level.

There are still plenty of guys on this team right now that we could probably drop and not even know they are gone.  Not sure we see much of that going forward.

It's going to be unbelievable. I truly expect Gunnar, Adley, Holliday, Mayo and Basallo to be silver slugger types. All at the same time. And the rest of the lineup will be good too.

I sometimes wonder if we take the current "old" guys for granted. Santander in particular. Even so, we'll have the opportunity to keep the ones we want/need to, so it's almost like the worst case scenario is that we have today's lineup plus whatever awesome dudes force themselves in as upgrades.

Did you actually read what I wrote or did you just decide to go all CNN on me and make stuff up?  :)

I didn’t say the production would be better.  I said the talent is better. Talent doesn’t always equate to production but there is no doubt the talent level will be raised.

There's little doubt that the talent will be improved. I don't take for granted that Burnes, Santander, Mullins, Hays and Mountcastle will be easily replaced if/when they leave, but if any team can do it mostly from internal additions, it's this one.

I've felt like 2025 and 2026, when all of Holliday, Basallo and Mayo are well-established, will be our best years. This year could surprise us though.

  14. 36 minutes ago, Sports Guy said:

We aren’t near as talented as we are going to be.

Bring Holliday, Norby, Mayo, Basallo, McDermott and Kjerstad into this picture..and perhaps EBJ as well.

    Get the Mountain back.

    Stupid.

Yup. Only real step back will be when Burnes leaves, but so much talent will be joining above and beyond that probable loss.

  15. 22 minutes ago, Philip said:

    Please don’t sell naming rights.

I hate advertising on uniforms, But the worst is selling the right to Name the stadium: Enron field(oops) and so on.

God bless Fenway Park, which is just Fenway Park, and Yankee Stadium, which is Yankee stadium.

I hope they do sell naming rights, put logos on uniforms, etc. I want them to be as competitive as possible in revenue so they can better afford to keep more of our young talent.

I expect Rubenstein to be more willing to spend, but I don't expect that he wants to take a loss.

Her answer one year ago mirrored exactly what they’re saying now about Holliday.

I have found myself listening to past quotes from O's leadership and feeling stupid I didn't know what they were going to do in the moment. I think they're actually incredibly consistent, but we tend to talk ourselves into other possibilities. That said, Elias opened the door for Holliday in the fan's eyes even if it wasn't quite as open as we hoped.

    6 minutes ago, Tony-OH said:

That's my take as well on he Holliday situation. I agree though, it was uncharacteristically poor job of PR by Elias.

This was reminiscent of "lift off." Regardless of his exact quotes or his exact meaning, he's said a couple of things and then lost control of the narrative.

Nor should he be dedicating his time to a press conference for a baseball team right now.

His handlers will almost certainly dedicate the opening of the press conference to the Key bridge, but I agree, he better be careful.

He shouldn't be standing up there with a new owner like Youngkin did with Leonsis in Virginia. That might have been appropriate, but not after yesterday.

And even now with a team that won 101 games, we seem to be operating like a team afraid to go for it.

We'll never know, but I think this is at least partially because they were in the process of selling the team. I don't think the principals in a deal like that want the numbers changing significantly within a certain period. Again, I'm not expert, but that's my assumption. The Commanders did the same thing last year.

2 minutes ago, Sports Guy said:

No doubt. We can’t forget what he allowed Elias to do and that he brought in Elias in the first place.

Funny thing is that you could be 100% right about JA, but the circumstances of his tenure might go down as the most successful controlling owner (or whatever his title was) maybe ever (or certainly one of the best). That could be true regardless of his likeability, greed, persona, etc.

The fact that you are defending that garbage post about THIS BOARD being the biggest apologists is pretty disheartening. As a long time member you know that it wrong and I would imagine would want to defend it instead of giving that poster his awful post any credence.

Just because people weren't going to dance on Peter Angelos' grave and some wanted to remember what they perceived as his good points as owner does not make this the biggest Peter Angelos fan club.

Nothing, and I mean nothing annoys me worse than when the board is generalized, especially when it's not even close to being right.

I'm not looking to pick a fight with you, but I just disagree.

This guy started a thread about it being a good day for the O's (referring to new ownership) and the first 4 replies were calling out his OP.

I know it wasn't a perfect OP, but I get him having a reaction to that and I highly doubt that he literally meant to characterize this entire board as PA apologists. That was my read on it at least.
