  1. The MLB.com trade ideas are within reason but those Sports Illustrated suggestions are crazy.

If anything Ohtani's stock is falling.  He gave up 4 home runs tonight.  Certainly a great pitcher but struggling a bit of late with that blister issue.  Unless he turns it around in a major way for his next start teams will not be offering what the Angels are expecting.

We will not pony up the ~$500m it takes to sign Ohtani, even if he wanted to be here (I don't think he does)

Yes, our payroll is low ($91 million, including all deferred/retained money)   My guess is our ultimate payroll cap is roughly around $150m max.   The picture doesn't look better next year, alot of those guys will be FA (which has positives and negative, but its roughly even) or will get raises in arbitration.

So Ohtani would burn through pretty much all of our remaining payroll space were we to sign him.

If we were to somehow sign Ohtani , we are basically saying that we're aren't planning on signing anyone of any significance for the next 7-8 years, including Adley, Gunnar, etc.  Basically we will be the Angels within 2-3 years, if we're lucky.  More likely we would be significantly below .500, and with a relatively high payroll without much flexibility, virtually guaranteeing the suck would continue for another 5 years after that.

Not that I think he does, but if Ohtani did express a desire to play for Baltimore -- whether it's  because he's excited about playing with a young, talented team, or because he likes crabcakes and pit beef -- the O's would certainly consider signing him because all of the extra revenue he could potentially generate for the O's.  Whether it's a new fanbase from Japan attending games or selling Ohtani t-shirts, you name it -- a  player like Ohtani could be a once in a lifetime goldmine for whichever team signs him.

If you can prove to them that Ohtani is a good investment for the revenue, it's always a possibility. But I don't think it would be that quick. They can't even work out a lease deal in over a year so no chance they'd approve a deal in 36 hours.

Only maybe the Dodgers could work out a deal that quickly.  But any team that signs Ohtani suddenly has a huge fanbase from Japan -- a country nearly half the size of the US.

Is the presumed need for a "TOR" starter throwing this discussion into the twilight zone?  Last winter the Twins acquired Pablo Lopez and Jose Salas and Byron Chourio for Luis Arraez alone.  Arraez is certainly a solid player albeit with no power - 131 wRC+ in 2022.  Right now the O's rough statistical equivalent for that deal would be Austin Hays at 129 wRC+ vs 131 for Arraez at the time of his trade.

Maybe wild-eyed claims of Holliday and Kjerstad and John Angelos' first born all being needed for a nonexistent prime Pedro Martinez or Randy Johnson entirely misses the point.  It's the Pablo Lopezes of the world that should be the focus and would much more the Orioles' speed anyway IMO.

Is such a pitcher available now?  I don't know, but Kjerstad or Cowser as a centerpiece should be plenty enough to get a deal like that rolling before the start of 2024 and would be a legit use of that kind of asset.

From the sound of things around here I think a number of people would rather see Hays traded rather than Cowser and Kjerstad.

Also, I don't think people see Austin Hays as being in the same tier as Arraez.  Maybe by some metrics, but others such as WAR, dWAR and OPS+ give a strong advantage to Arraez.  Hays is performing pretty far beyond his pre-2023 numbers (with the exception of a very limited strong showing in 2019).  And even if they do see Hays as a comparison to Arraez, all things being equal why wouldn't the trade partner just demand Hays + Cowser or Kjerstad -- because Hays probably has neither the consistency nor the defense to bring back -- on his own -- a strong starting pitcher with multi years under control.

Also, as good as Pablo Lopez is, perhaps most see him as around a #3 starter (though maybe not even that this season).

Ohtani comes from Japan. They are a conservative and bashful people. Baltimore is the hood. If you wonder around 80% of Baltimore at night you are liable to get shanked. Do not trade for Ohtani. He will never resign here.

Who wanders around 80% of Baltimore at at night?  Who wanders around 80% of any American MLB city at night?

I could see Ohtani signing with a small market team.  He's not from a big city and doesn't seem to crave the glamour and spotlight of one.  He's his own spotlight.

He comes from Iwate Prefecture, which has a humid subtropical climate with sandy beaches to the east and mountains to the west.  Hmm...

  6. Rays were never going to keep up the pace they started the season with, but lately they've struggled because of injuries in their starting rotation.  Bet they make some kind of an offer for Ohtani but doubt they'll get him.

We have done a good job thus far balancing the two. We are going to make the playoffs this year regardless, you can bank that. Our best teams won't start coming until next year when Kjerstad and Mayo join along with Holliday at some point. When all those guys are up and Gunnar and Adley have another year of growth/experience we will then be able to start competing with the Braves/Rays. Right now they are a tier better than we are, especially the Braves.

I don't put much stock into this game because we screwed Wells by getting him off schedule. This was the same type of bot thinking that caused the Marlins to use an opener on Sunday instead Luzardo effectively handing us the sweep. Some times you can get too cute/smart with the tinkering and outthink yourself.

I don't think it's guaranteed we make the playoffs this year as hot as Boston and Toronto are lately.  The O's need to keep winning.  And we need more pitching.

Yeah and I kept saying it would take a lot more before he would be good. But we're not a losing team anymore and wr don't have time to wait for 3 rookies at rhe same time to get this crap together while they adjust to big league pitching. Those who thought he would come up and light the world on fire and instantly replace Santander or Hays were just a bit unrealistic. There's always an adjustment period and some take longer than others. We don't have much margin to mess around when chasing a division title.

We need Mullins back.  He's still the heart and soul of this team imo and the spark when the O's need it.

The Braves and Dodgers are not on the same level. One is the best in the sport by a good distance this year. The other is in a nice tier under that.

The Phillies were not on the same level as the Braves, Mets, Dodgers and Cardinals last season and yet they got hot at the right time and made it to the World Series.  There's a lot of baseball left.

The Dodgers have won 100 games in four of the past five full seasons and have been in the WS three times in the past six years. They're on that level until they're not. And we're not on that level until we are.

Agreed, but I think the Braves are better partly because they're younger and maybe a bit less banged up than the Dodgers.  Both teams have lost some of their best pitchers to injury, but the Braves' have amazing depth all over the field.  Of course the Dodgers have a lot of depth too but maybe not quite as big league ready.

Still, the Dodgers can beat the Braves in the postseason.  Anything can happen in the postseason.  I'm still amazed the Phillies made it to the WS last season.

we simply aren't  CLOSE to as good as the Dodgsrs.and we miss Kershaw too...just not a good matchup...

The Dodgers are good enough to beat any team.  It doesn't mean the Orioles are suddenly a weak team.  There's no way the O's would have an easy time with a team with that lineup -- nor will any other team.  This is a good wakeup call for the O's that they need more pitching -- and gives the young players a taste of what it's like to play a World Series caliber team that's starting to peak.

Actually yea. Have quite a few tatted up, chain wearing losers in my family. Type of guys to listen to Nu Metal and hang outside the Royal Farms with a Monster in the middle of the day cuz they dont have a job.

Lol easily this guy's best post

Greyson is hanging in there.  Have to say I am surprised and impressed so far.  The Dodgers have a good offense?  I think they do but cant really remember if I am right.

He appears to be a different pitcher when the changeup is working.  The Dodgers have one of the best offenses -- especially 1-5 in the lineup.  Mookie and Freeman are both easy MVP candidates if not for Acuna right in front of them.

I also have no problems with Hyde's decision (Why put the potential game-tying run on base?), but Soler had been taken out of the game already.

Ah good point. Then maybe they should have walked Arraez 😆

Actually if they had walked Arraez they would have been putting the go ahead run on base.  Dane Myers was already on second.

Regardless of who the starters are, I believe that we need another reliable bullpen arm.

If the O's add two starters (presumably Grayson and someone from a trade), then you can move two of Irvin/Kremer/Gibson (or even Wells if there are concerns about his pitch count as a starter) to the bullpen -- and do the occasional start.

But yeah maybe the O's really should target a bullpen specific arm.  I can't see the O's adding Grayson and trading for two pitchers (a starter and a reliever), but maybe that is the ideal way to go.  If we get lucky enough that Givens or Means is also ready next month or the month after then even better.
