Interesting Norby is higher then Ortiz.  Norby doesn’t get a lot of love on the hangout compared to how the scouts see him.

He probably would if he had a hot start.  Seems like all the others guys are blazing and he started off cold.  It's a long season, will be interesting to see how things stack up at the end of the year.  He finished last year on an absolute scorcher.

  2. Tate came in bot 7th.

Flyball left field, BB, bloop to LF, GIDP

Stuff looked pretty good, but not a lot of control.

    Started behind to all batters.

As I understand it, xwOBA rewards exit velocity and launch angle: if you hit balls as hard as you do, and get them in the air as much as you do, what should your wOBA be? That makes sense for a guy like Mountcastle, who is usually trying to hit the ball as hard as he can and to get it up in the air.

But does it work for a guy who's more of a slap hitter, who's not trying to do as often what Mountcastle is usually trying to do? (I would put McKenna in that category though he's not an extreme case.) More often than a lot of hitters, and I would guess more often than most hitters,  he's trying to lob a ball over the infield or place it between the infielders or down a foul line. It seems to me that kind of hitter could be productive, and have a high wOBA (as well as a high BA and OBP, but with a modest SLG), even if his exit velocity (which apparently, at least for the Orioles, is spelled and pronounced "velo") and launch angles don't justify that wOBA.

All hitters are trying to drive the ball in the air as hard As they can.  Some players are just better than the other ones.

I’m still trying to figure out if they are going to recover from that “awful loss” when McKenna dropped the ball.

That won’t come into play until game 162.

I could hardly breathe.  Grayson put on his big boy pants tonight.  We need some fan turnout.

If they are still rolling they should get a nice bump when kids get out of school in a month + but don’t think we will see serious attendance until late August (assuming they are still playing well).

Any word on how his defense is progressing at SS — range, hands, throwing?

From the miserable cameras in MiLB & Aberdeen, in particular, plus the few games that weren't available, it's been hard to tell.  From what I've seen, he makes the routine plays.  Can't wait to see him play in person.

McCann should not be DH'ing versus LH SP.  He should be catching and that is all.  If we need a DH versus LHP then Westburg should get the spot start.  Also, Westburg should likely be playing versus LHP over Gunnar and Frazier.  Westburg should be the direct replacement for Urias.

Elias has the open 40 man spot.  Unless he's saving that for a Franmil Reyes, or a RP/SP.

I’m all for it.  It’s time for him to come up and get a crack at at.

Haha, love the boards - the community is a truly great resource for diehard fans.

Where else in the world can you just refer to role players on 35 years ago Orioles and know many of the readers get it?

I do believe you'll get a good influx as these teams get really good, and basically consider it a known known later this year some newbie is going to have an early post how good Adam Frazier looks, or if we should trade for starting pitching :)

And to get back to thread topic, Prieto basically is Frazier, right?    Maybe next year he can do that job for the MLB minimum!     I guess Mike Elias could ask him to pick up catching...

Until this post I didn’t realize(or had cared to check) how short Prieto is.  He’s 5’9” vs. 5’10” Frazier.

He does seem a bit older because of his Cuban background just because most of them are a bit older.

Prieto has a nice hit tool, but I still have questions over the infield defense, arm strength (or lack there of), lack of game power and speed.

He does remind a bit of Vavra, so I think getting some outfield time to make him versatile might be a good idea.

I haven’t seen him play in person yet, so only have seen his ABs.  D is tough to judge on MiLB.TV

Honestly, I had kind of written him off last year after seeing the lite hitting w/ little power and reading your reports on D & arm.

Ive been pleasantly surprised this year.  His ABs are phenomenal in the Vavra/Frazier mold and has been  a pest all year for AA pitchers.

His story is crazy and  I have a soft spot for him.  I hope for his sake and for the orgs sake he continues in this upward projection

It's absurd that Westburg's not already helping the Orioles. His bat is sorely needed against left-handed pitching, and to lengthen the lineup and make it more dangerous in general. I've mentioned it before in this thread I believe, but I think Westburg will provide leadership qualities that will help the big league team as well.

I actually think Westburg will/should wind up as the organization's 1B of the future. Mountcastle should be traded during the offseason.

In the meantime, Westburg can play 2B instead of Frazier, and/or RF or DH.

I like what Westburg brings to the table.  I think they want him to improve his throws and footwork work from 2b/ss/3B.  He’s a gamer and is always locked in, but will make a mistake throwing or just not having his feet set-up properly.  You ca tell it kills him and you can also tell he moves on immediately and learns from his mistake.  Now these plays are not errors per se, sometimes a throw sails or is wide and 1B bails him out or he gets to a ground ball but isn’t properly set up to make the throw and his weight takes him away down the throw.  He looks like a guy who doesn’t have these movements come 100% naturally but has worked his tail off to get where he is.  If he absolutely mashed I could see him at 1b since his arm is his weak link (not saying it’s bad, just not his strongest tool).  I do think that is selling him short a bit, though. He has value in the IF and likely at 2b as his best position.  I was hoping he’d be helping the Os by this point.  The bat is ready for MLB pitching.

He is not a butcher in the field. Not in any way and if you want to come at me, you better bring better analysis than this BS.

I showed multiple times last year how his defensive numbers were dragged down by two misplays. I've watched him play defense in the outfield over many games. While he's not smooth, and I would not call him a plus outfielder, he's an average outfielder who is similar to Santander before he got really slow out there last year.

Now, you can hate on Stowers in your attempt to kiss the Orioles butt in every way, but you will look silly if he's ever actually given everyday PAs by someone.

The fact that you think he's a bat off the bench tells me everything we need to know about your ability analyze and access baseball talent. You're only saying that because that's how the Orioles have misused him and its actually quite laughable.

It's particularly laughable that you think Frazier is an everyday player while Stowers is a bat off the bench. lol

I apologize.  I misquoted you.  You said my analysis was BS.  Not garbage :)

It’s all good, Tony.  No hard feelings no grudges.  I appreciate you.

  12. 6 minutes ago, Tony-OH said:

Show me where I said your analysis was garbage? You were taking a victory lap because Stowers is sucking bad right now and I showed where you were praising him and saying you love him.

Then you say it's not the first time a ball went under his glove and I said you're wrong, he's never made an error in the major leagues.

Just stay on target. Feel free to a "victory" lap because Stowers is sucking right now. There's a lot more baseball to be played and even if he needs to go down, he'll be back at some point and will be successful. He's just in some kind of awful, awful funk right now.

I will continue to root for him and expect that he will play better.

He is in a funk, and he took it into the field.

You only get a couple hall passes for plays like that.

Lol, it's easy to be a Stowers hater because he's clearly sucking right now. Your opinion changes when the wind changes directions. Stowers probably does need to go back down because it's in his head right now. He's having terrible PAs and that play in RF was inexcusable, but he's not a lazy player or a bad outfielder.

I don’t k do what is difficult to understand.

    1. I’m a Stowers fan (as mentioned in the Stowers must be traded thread - he has been kind to my kids at Tides game)

    2. He is prone to bone head plays

    3. He has an accurate cannon

    4. His routes need to improve

That is what I have stated over and over in various threads.  There had been “changing with directions of the wind”

That's literally the first time that has happened in the big leagues. Literally, Just because you foresaw an error back in April 1st doesn't make you some kind of soothsayer.

Again.  I have seen him make a handful of bone head plays over the course of 20 games.

I said as much in this thread and you  told me my analysis was garbage.

Was simply sharing what I had observed.

The only bloop that was catchable in his career that fell in front of him was last year against the Red Sox.

C'mon man, you can't just make stuff up. You know I will call you on it.

I have seen him play the better part of 2 dozen games in Norfolk.  Feel free to call away.  Just like you did in the Stowers must be traded thread.  Maybe give it a re-read.
