Does Elias and Angelos realize fans notice they are doing little to make us a contender for 2023? Do they think us fans don't notice other teams scooping up the best available FA's everyday?  They don't realize that you have to overpay and take some risks?  Why is it OK for most other teams to overpay and take risks but not the O's.  Why don't Angelos announce the truth to the fans, he don't want the financial responsibility it takes to put a good product on the field like all other owners do. I don't understand why Angelos wants to keep the team when he don't want any risks like other team owners accept. I know Angelos got burned with Ubaldo, C.Davis and Cobb, if he had hired the proper personnel then to analyze the FA's available there would have been better results.  He now has the personnel, but Angelos still don't listen to the personnel. He could still salvage the off season with the signing of Cueto, Wacha.

I think they also realize that the fans have been taking all the BS for decades and that neither fans( maybe 5-10k season ticket holders left?) nor local media will hold them accountable.

I don't see any reason to think he would. He's already banked over $10 million and is on track to reach free agency prior to age 30, which would likely mean that he could reasonably ask for a 5 or 6 year deal at an absolutely astronomical AAV as long as he is still producing at even roughly his 2022 level. Why would he pass on that opportunity and tie himself down to an organization that he has already watched trade away several good players in the middle of a playoff race and then follow up an 83 win season by signing a bunch of reclamation projects to one year deals?

He appears to be the competitive type and his present organization does not seem to share that drive.

The time value of money is a thing.  A creative contract that pays out a big bonus and larger chunks early in the contract could be appealing to someone playing the most physically demanding position in baseball.

I have been beating the Handley drum since May of 2021, at least. I wanted him up for Severino, because he wasn’t a catcher. Then move to backup for Adley. If he put up his AA numbers at the MLB level, he could be a starter for most MLB teams.
I can’t stand Roch and refuse to read any of the garbage he puts out there.

I think they are taking their time and slow cooking Handley.  It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if we have a glut of catchers coming up in the next 2-3 years.  The old adage of the importance of catchers and short stops has rung true for a century now.

I think that Atlanta has positioned itself into a spot that players want to extend to stay there.

It's been beautiful to watch and something I've wished the O's would do for quite some time.

Fantastic organization.  Middle of the road taxes. Extremely low cost of living.  Major airline hub for easy travel.  The amount of people moving from the North East to Atlanta is staggering.  Can trade in your two bed 1 bath condo for a 5 bed 5 bath Custom house on 5 acres.  What’s not to like?

  5. I’m super frustrated.  Keep telling myself to be patient.

My orange colored sunglasses tell me maybe we are waiting until the deadline to get a gauge on healthy SPs, see how our youngsters are doing, and see how realistic a top WC spot.

Apart from that I got nothing.  Par for the course being an Os fan.

This is how the O’s did when various players started.

    +13 Rutschman (60-47)

    +10 Mountcastle (77-67)

    +9 Vavra (18-9)

    +5 Hays (72-67), McKenna (24-19), Martin (7-2)

    +4 Mateo (73-69), Mullins (74-70)

    +3 Owings (11-8)

    +2 Santander (76-74), Henderson (16-14), Stowers (13-11), Arauz (5-3)

    +1 Urias (55-54)

    0  Phillips (2-2)

    -1 Nevin (26-27)

    -2 Aguilar (5-7), Gutierrez (3-5), Bannon (1-3)

    -3 Mancini (44-47)

    -5 Chirinos (29-34)

    -7 Bemboom (4-11)

    -9 Odor (52-61)

Kind of funny to see Vavra so high on this list in very limited playing time.

The good news is that all the guys “in the negative” are gone next year and have been replaced by upgrades (even if just marginal upgrades).

The bolded is the biggest unknown, IMO. We got real contributions from Voth, Watkins, Kreibel, etc. last year. Bautista was awesome. Tate/Perez too. Starters, relievers. It didn't matter. Did the O's figure something out about their general approach to make the whole staff better? If so, it's sustainable. If not, major regression is possible across the board.

I do think Gibson is better than the Lyles we thought we were getting last year, by a good margin. Will his results improve as Lyles' did after he got here? Will Lyles regress in KC? I'd bet on both happening, actually, which would mean Gibson's a pretty substantial upgrade.

The main difference last year vs. prior years was attacking the zone.  Hitting a baseball squarely is still the hardest thing to do in sports, gotta make the batter earn it.  I tend to think their approach is repeatable, but will only work if the players can execute.  Pitcher that struggle with control will always struggle.  Walks are free runs.  Can’t be giving  stuff away for feee :)

If they hate it and we hate it then it must be a pretty fair deal.  I think it’s pretty spot on.  I’d do it but it would be painful to pull the trigger.  A young controllable MLB SP, two highly ranked prospects, and a pretty high floor lottery ticket.  All 4 of those players could conceivably play for the Brewers this year and we are giving away 23 years of service for 2.

Thought you were talking about DL Hall. Nope his whip is 1.68 and 4 BB per 9. This is a guy that struggled to pitch 5 in the minors with a 1.45 WHIP and a 5.8 BB per 9. But, many here were giddy about his promotion and dogging other about skepticism that he could be a difference maker in the majors after struggling mightily at AAA. Many wanted him handed a rotation spot LOL.

**************BTW, I’m curious if you looked at his 2nd half stats or by the month. As I recall he was pretty dam solid along side of Kremer the last 3rd of the season at very least.

I was in the slow your roll on DL Hall camp and thought he needed time to work things out in AAA.  Just goes to show why I’m a contractor and not a baseball evaluator :) He came up and looked like he belonged after his first disaster of a start.

Different pitch selection strategy affected the hard contact hit against him. He went to the minors and made adjustments. He changed from a FB/Curve guy to a Sweep slider/High FB guy.

No doubt he made adjustments and had more success in the second half (I used bbref 1st & 2nd half feature).  He’s not a guy I’d like to rely on going into a year we are supposed to compete.  If I can turn him into a #1 I do it.  His potential and stuff is what could make that attractive to another team.  You have to give up talent to get talent and Brewers would want a rotation piece ready to go. By no means and I shopping him and if he’s on the team next year I hope he can repeat and build on his second half.

That’s interesting. I’d probably want them to eat some money on the trade but at least we’re not giving up a lot. I worry about Sale’s maturity, but at least it’s not a long term deal.

I like the talent that Sale possesses and would be interested in a risk for a talent like that.  I don’t think he passes the high character test after reading some stories about him over the years.  I think this regime is huge on character guys.  with that said, I’d be surprised if kick the tires.

I felt the same way until I took a closer look at his second half numbers. 3.28 ERA, 1.164 WHIP and 65 Ks in 71.1 IP. That'll play.

I’m inclined to think he got lucky.

    First 1/2 BABIP .396

    Second 1/2 BABIP .257

Same control issues in both halves…almost identical.
