I thought it was notable last night that Cionel Perez got a whiff to finish off a Jose Ramirez strikeout with a sinker.   Elite contact skills are a good chunk of what makes Ramirez a regular MVP candidate.

Savant has Cionel's 2022 distribution 61% fastball, 38% slider, and it was a nicely executed 3rd pitch vs. someone you might need something a little special for.

Palmer loved that pitch, too!  That pitch was absolutely nasty.  95 and darting down and in to the RHH.  If you can get Jose Ramirez to whiff and have him make that facial expression, you know you just threw a good pitch.

The book on Fabian is that his poison pitch is high heat.

I think hitters are being instructed on how to hit that pitch because pitchers are increasingly targeting that part of the zone.

In DL Hall’s debut, he was consistently missing high. I think he was trying to locate up top. If you have good stuff and any kind of rise, those pitches are deadly.

Oh yea.  Big time, they work all kinds of drills to focus on that pitch.  Will be interesting to see when that goes out of vogue.  It's interesting we are starting to see a few more sinkers as hitters are looking and working on that high 'rising' fastball.

A man's HR tonight.  took 94 at the letters and just swatted it. def a swing that plays in the current MLB environment

Rewatching that, that is a heck of an impressive swing getting on top of a 94 mph FB that had to be 1-2'' above the zone.  I know they focus and practice hitting the high fastball, looks like that skill is coming along nicely.  Cowser, Stowers, and Beavers (the few games I've watched) struggle with that high fastball.

Favorite Oriole player in a year or two? The Orioles are going to make this difficult! the Orioles have so many good young players who seem very likable. Gunnar bobble head night is going to be big.

I can already see it, the helmet half on during a massive swing.

  5. From Zachary Silver's Article:

And then, he was handed the MVP belt as well as the floor of the visitors' clubhouse at Progressive Field.

“They asked me to say a word,” Henderson said, “and I just told them, ‘Thank you for letting me come out here and do this.’”

How can you not love this kid?

  6. Holy cow.  What a debut!  I had to watch the game recorded and my phone kept pinging, so I had an idea it was a special game.  That was so fun to watch.  He is going to be an incredible player.  Put all tools on display: his poise, his eye, his arm, his speed, his hitting ability, and his power.  Now I expect he is going to have some adjustments to make and the league will catch up, but this kid sure looks special.  Seems like he has the 'it' factor and the game is slow to him.  There were a couple times you could see on his face when he was like 'whoa' that was something I haven't seen....Odors 110mph laser behind him, Bakers (I think)95mph cutter dotted on the outside black, but look like he took it in stride and just logged the info.  His ABs are must watch TV moving forward :)

  7. Mark Appel is pitching now for Lehigh against the Tides. Got Westburg to bounce out to third.  Appel is actually putting together a pretty solid little season as a reliever after not playing for 4 years.  Cool story.

  8. Westburg hit an absolute bomb 400+ for his 22nd HR of the year.  Added a couple walks as well and has the ops up to .840

His arm was exposed a little bit on a really tough high hopper to his left where he needed to rotate body quick and make a very strong through and you could see a little lack of zip.  Incredibly tough play and only an elite arm would have made the play, but you start to think about how they value a 2b with a very strong arm and how they might view him.

Regardless, would be awesome to see him finish season on fire and forcing the issue.  Will be fun to see how he finishes out the season.

  9. I have not been high on Bauman at all this year.  Seen him pitch a couple times and he always seems to get hit hard.  Fastball looks super straight always.  Tonight, he is absolutely shoving.  11k's through 5ip - looks like he's getting a little bit of movement on the FB.  Pitching against Lehigh which is a pretty decent team.  He's given up one run so far.  Lead-off batter in the 5th got on, on a strikeout on a slider in the dirt and Nottingham couldn't block it.  That runner scored on a double down the line.  He's given up 4 hits and no BBs 60 of 84 strikes.  Imagine he may be done, will be interesting to see if they put him back out there.

Update: 13ks through 6ip.  0 BBs 69/97 strikes.  Awesome they let him go back out there.  What a great performance.

  10. Bowie is crushing Erie so far tonight 8-1 bottom 6.  Erie with some questionable D again.  Bowie has pounded out 12 hits.  Prieto, Mayo, and Roberts all have two hits.  The only guy in line-up without a hit yet tonight........Norby lol.  He'll get another shot, though, it looks like.

Update: 15-2 bot 8 a lot more hits for Bowie and a couple more errors for Erie.

  11. Pitcher's duel in Aberdeen earlier today.  The Iron Birds only managed one hit.  Pinto gave up 1 run on 3 hits with 1 BB over 5 ip.  Unfortunately, one of those hits was a HR.  43 of 67 strikes.

  12. Athletic redundancy, the ability to teach kids to hit, and the ability to pick players with plus make up, work ethic, and who they know their system will work on.  That's one thing I keep hearing around on each guy "he's a great guy", "works hard", 'crazy work ethic".  Granted, it's a lot of PR, but you don't get that all the time as consistently as I've seen it reported in recent years.  And then the one thing that no one talks about a ton, is that these guys are all pretty big, strong, athletic, and fast...... at every position, look at Adley.  Thats my main take away from watching a bunch of Norfolk games this year 1. they are big guys 2. they are all incredibly fast & athletic.   They believe in their ability to teach hitting and it's starting to show.  In 2 or three years we are looking at plus speed and defensive at almost every single position.  If the guys can hit, it's going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Wow what a year. It would be a really tough decision for Orioles MILB POY if not for Gunnar. Cowser, Westburg, Stowers, and Norby, would all have somewhat of a case.

Norby should get the call to AAA after the Gunnar promotion. He’s in the 2B/LF/1B discussion moving forward.

Another guy that has a case to be a top 100 prospect.

They named two last year, maybe they name three this year.

I understand not bringing Henderson up until last week to avoid the rookie eligibility issues with days and at-bats.  I just don't understand not bringing him up earlier this week when that was no longer an issue.  He should have been in the line-up all three nights in Cleveland.  Instead of Odor, Urias or Mountcastle...take your pick.

    Reps at 2b.

Well, he’s getting time in LF. Would love to see how his bat progresses next year and who emerges as the best rookie hitter from the Westburg, Gunnar, Ortiz and Cowser group?

If Norby plays September in Norfolk he should accumulate ~50-60ABs.  That puts him on pace to crack MLB next year around halfway through the season once he's covered the Elias 200.  He will be pushing Westburg, Ortiz, & Urias and ready to go if any of those three slip or get injured.

That's what I thought. I know Hall is already a part of the 40 man, so that leaves Gunnar. I would think they would want Gunnar post season eligible, so he has to be added by 11:59 tomorrow night.

From what I read they don't count towards the 40 man,  it doesn't count towards service time, and  they only get the MLB per diem (Hundred bucks give or take), so they won't get their pay raise bump until they are actually activated to the 26 (or 28) man roster.

And we will need an extra starter for the doubleheader Monday.   Could be him, just one extra day of rest.   Of course he is a lefty Toronto is loaded with RH bats.   So maybe they go Harvey instead.

I imagine they'd like to see him have some sustained success before throwing him back out there.  Toronto's lineup would be a test to say the least.  Will be very interesting to see who gets that second Monday start.  I think you might be right with Harvey.

Bowie won the critical Game 1 of its series with Erie, 6-5, behind Connor Norby’s two homers, triple and 4 RBI.  In classic minor league fashion, the Baysox scored the winning run in the ninth on a Cody Roberts double followed by two wild pitches.

Ugly game for Erie.  The two WPs for the go ahead run and they also gave up a couple runs earlier in the game on 2 errors.  Gotta love MiLB - so entertaining.
