    What is up with Bowie?

    Jon Meoli wrote an article last week about how they run BP.  Sounds like Aberdeen is set up as a hitting “lab” - they are learning, changing, adjusting, and being challenged.  Sounds like they need to “graduate” that program before going to Bowie, and once graduated the players  have a much better skill set and approach to tackle AA.

    I mean, GRod and DL Hall have a chance to be really good, but they won't exactly be a surprise given that they are already on top 10 and top 100 lists.  

    Maybe he's talking about Povich?  Who else?  

    Justin Armbruester & Noah Denoyer come to mind.  They will start in AA and if they make the next step could move quickly.  Guys in the rotation are holding their own right now and there will be a talent injection from the AAA guys early in the season.  There are a few guys in A and low A that look like they could make the next step as well.

    Good luck to him.  He wasn’t going to play here.  He was a nice guy and I loved his pop for a little guy.  He hit some majestic bombs in Norfolk.   Kinda blows my mind Dodgers are claiming someone we DFA'd - times have changed a bit.

    Its always something so he can go back and say, well we tried but they wouldn’t take our money.

    Its like him saying he tried at the deadline to get ML talent.  You don’t get credit for trying.  You get credit for doing.  
     

     

    Thats fair.  Completely agree talk is cheap and you get credit for doing.  Time will tell & that time is this upcoming off-season.

    I don’t think he is perfect and I definitely don’t think he’s infallible, but he seems genuine and from my perspective he has stayed true to his word/plan from the beginning.  I’ll happily eat crow if the wool is being pulled over my eyes. I think the wall + the teams performance this year will open a lot of eyes on the pitching market.  I think he gets some deals done this off-season that will surprise a lot people.

    -Mike Elias on high heat today being interviewed by Christopher Russo.

     

    Other tidbits:

    -Trading Mancini and Lopez was extremely difficult, but they needed to replenish lower levels.

    -We have some amazing pitchers coming up that will surprise a lot of people. 
     

    The man has done exactly what he said he would do from the very beginning.  No doubt in my mind they pony up for some premium players in the next couple of off-seasons.

    So instead of one player out of position, we will have two players out of position and Stowers (who I think has questionable defense himself) in the outfield.  Genius.  Odor must have some incriminating info on these guys, it's wild how they are going out of their way to accommodate him to the detriment of the team.  I imagine there is a very specific date they have in mind where they will cut bait on the season or bring up Gunnar.  It just makes way too much sense to put Gunnar at 3b, Stowers in RF, Vavra at 2b, Santander at DH and DFA Odor.  Or keep Odor and drop one of Phillips/McKenna.

    What an exciting development!  I’m gonna go back and watch that game.  I saw he was starting but didn’t have time to watch last night.  I guess Elias wasn’t blowing smoke when he made those strong comments on his ability.

    I’m trying to figure out how to imbed a picture to show 3d bat path from my swing tracker - but can’t figure it out.  You can measure the distance the barrel travels through the zone (width of the plate, in front of it, over it and behind it).  
     

    When you swing you are not just trying to hit the ball, you taking a calculated guess and are trying to slot the bat on the same plane as the ball and sweep the bat along that plane as long as possible.  The longer you can keep your bat on that plane, the higher % chance you have of hitting the ball.   It’s really just a percentage game - someone that holds their barrel through the zone 30-36” (pretty good) is going to make much more contact and harder contact than someone who holds their barrel through the zone 20-30”(not good).
     

    Watch Jackson’s swing and watch how long he keeps the bat going towards the pitcher before it finally leaves the area over the plate and releases to finish his swing.  Adley does a phenomenal job and Soto is other worldly.  
     

    Pick up a swing tracker from Diamond Kinetics for like $100 and put it on your sons bat.  I use it with all the kids I coach.  It gives them a visual of what their bat is actually doing during the swing.  It’s a lot easier to show kids what the bat path should look like and metrics to aim for as opposed to giving them verbal queues like keep your shoulder in etc.  kids get instant feedback and enjoy seeing the progress made.  You’ll get metrics like “distance in the zone”, “hand cast”, barrel speed, hand speed, and applied power.  Happy to talk offline if you’d like more info.
