Teams that clinch playoff spots earlier can sometimes be flat once the playoffs start. Won't be any danger of that with this Orioles teams.

Plus, I'm hoping the team's secret weapon Grayson Rodriguez makes his debut before the season ends.

It’s been a while since we’ve “played well”.  Last 20 games would be a hell of a time to go on a run.

    GRod, Cowser, Mayo and Holliday

I’m not sold on Mayo yet.  I think next year could be huge for him, but he has some questions to answer for me.  This would be the year to get a steaL of a deal, but I think it’s risky.  Especially with his body size + some of the nagging injuries he’s had to date.   I’d like to see one solid dominating year form him before I pay him.

To wit, Ty Wigginton was an All Star so I'm not sure that factors in.

I didn't vote for Holliday, but I think Holliday may entertain it, because it basically drastically accelerates his timetable to the majors. Hypothetically, he'd make between $10-15mm just to play in the minors and would play out his options and he'd have to be in the bigs for good. Depends on what's important to him; money or being in the Show asap.

58MM isn’t a bad pay day before you turn 29.  Plenty of time for a second deal and if all falls right that second deal would be massive.

I can’t share the optimism, but I applaud those of you clinging to slim hope. Something happened to this team in the past two weeks. They just look deflated since about the time Gunnar booted the balls at 2B, not to bash him. Just tough timing there.

The Jays look about like they should have all along. That is a talented group over there, and they are built for a playoff run. We’re just not built that way, honestly. Our starters have been doing good things, but they have been exposed. The pen is over-worked. Ced, Adley and Santander just aren’t enough offense.

That was my exact thought.  When Gunnar booter the balls at 2b v. Blue Jays everything came back down to Earth.   We were all hoping he'd pull a Manny and put us on his shoulders (at least defensively) and that was kind of it.  Need to finish on a high note.

  5. I jumped on his case for what I thought was an bad post game interview earlier in the season(maybe his first start).  It didn’t seem like he was prepared for the questioning and I thought he came off immature.  I’d like to say that he’s really done a fantastic job of maturing through the seasons and staying focused during the game for every pitch.  His post game interviews have shown that same maturity and focus.  It’s been very encouraging to see the growth in that regard.  I was not high on him earlier in the year, but I’m starting to expect a good outing every time he gets the ball now.

My wife just said "It's like they're giving McKenna a reward for pitching last night."

“Ryan, we are going to need you to pitch.  But  I promise to play you at your favorite position tomorrow and bat lead-off.”

I can see that going down.  I think she’s on to something.

I think the long and short of it is, it’s hard for most hitters to hit to all fields.  It’s not just a matter of trying to hit homers.   It’s not that easy to handle pitches with different velocities and different breaks and control the direction the ball is hit.  I think a lot of hitters would try to beat the shift if they thought they were capable of doing it.

In 2002, about 43% of batted balls were pulled, 29% to CF, 28% opposite field.  By 2012 (roughly the start of the advent of shifting), it was 40/35/25.  It’s still about 40/35/25 today.  So it’s not like hitters have gotten pull crazy in the last decade, or even the last 20 years.

(Sorry, the data doesn’t go back much earlier than 2002.)

I realize the batting break down is just about the same, and that’s kinda my point.  Starting back in 2012 with the start of the shift massive holes started opening up, holes that had never been there.  It’s easier to hit a ball the other way than it is to hit it over the fence.  You don’t need perfect contact and massive EVs.  I guess I always thought that there would be some natural progression and a team or player would try to take advantage of the new holes created and start a new trend.  But in an age of getting paid to hit the HR and launch angle, no one took that gamble with their careers.  It just seemed to me that making hitting into the hole a focus, a player could really impact his OBP.  I think I was just wrong.

The shift rule bothers me more in principle than it does in practice.  Some guy hits the ball to the same area 75% of the time and you can’t adjust your defense to account for that?   Boo!  But I do think it will boost offense, which is good.

I don’t mind the change, but I was hoping it would have happened organically instead of being mandated.  I realize it’s hard to ask the players to take pay cut by hitting ball the other way and no try to hit a HR every AB, but I just assumed batters would eventually make an adjustment to take advantage of what the defense was giving them.   I think the long term outcomes will be beneficial and batters w/o power will stop selling out for HRs trying to raise their pay and start to focus more on OBP skills.  I guess we will see.

I saw they dropped a new album.

    Worth checking out?

Just got it.  I like it so far.  I was a big fan a long time ago, so I’m biased.   They play wed night in DC.  Same night as Os :/….tough decisions.  They always put on a good live show.

Call me crazy, but I’m rooting for him to have a breakout year next year and push Stowers. There also maybe be a trade for pitching?

I think everyone is rooting for Heston.  Great story and a shot in the arm for the system if he breaks out.

  11. Having seen both in person a few times each now (Westburg much more), IMO Ortiz has jumped Westburg.  His ABs are very impressive, he’s showing the pop, he’s a tick faster, and the defense is special.  Westburg is a fine player but on D he is prone to the occasional botched routine play & the arm can get a little off at times.  He’s prone to extended cold streaks at the plate.  Pretty fantastic we have both!!!
