Fun performance last night, but I hope DL Hall is sent home for the winter with a starting pitcher's preparation plan.

Sure everyone is just an out-getter, but he's someone I hope starts one of the first five games next season.    You can always adjust in-season if he washes out or if by mid-year you want to nurse him to the fall.

Great to see him settling in in any context.

Who is the Opening Day starter as it stands now?

Best guy in spring training.  Looking like Kremer or Bradish.   I think they should put Wells in the bullpen and have him do Akins job at a masterful level.  I don’t think he is durable for a SP load.  Lyles is gone.  Means is just second half depth.  Voth is depth.  If Spencer Watkins is on the 40 man something went wrong with the off-season.  I think Hall goes to AAA or they give him 100 ip out of the bullpen(my preference). Bauman same as Hall.  The way I see it we have

    Rotation:

    1. Grayson

    2. Kremer

    3. Bradish

    4. need to acquire

    5. Need to acquire

    SP depth/bullpen/piggyback types:

    1. Voth

    2. Wells

    3. Hall

    4. Bauman

Not sure I’m too interested in anyone else.  We should acquire 2 if not 3 pitchers this off-season.  2 starters and a dominate late inning type.

Gotta wonder if he’d consider coming back next year at this point, especially with the NL adopting the DH.

He probably doesn’t but it’s gotta be hard to walk away when there’s still something left in the tank.

He looks like he’s going to need wheelchair in a couple years.  I think he is content to be done this year.

  3. “We take pride in helping the young guy,” pitcher Jordan Lyles said Friday. “We got a lot of young talented guys here, excited, happy, fortunate to be a part of it. But as older guys we might not be here in the future but this organization, the city of Baltimore is definitely in good hands.” Jordan Lyles

  4. I really like Jordan Lyles.  His post game interviews are great and you can tell he’s a genuinely good guy.  When he throws like he has tonight you almost think about re-signing him.  I’ve had that brief thought a few times this year, but then you look at the big picture stats and there is just no way we can have him on our roster if we are really trying to win.  The kids  saw what a pro looks like, now they need to see what  a proven winner is like to lead your group. I hope Lyles’s can parlay this season into a nice pay day.  He will def have his spot in orioles lore when thinking about us exciting and gritty 2022 team.

So the Rays and Mariners have the tiebreak against us and Toronto doesn't, so we are effectively 5 back in the loss column to all 3 teams.

Makes it pretty simple... To make the playoffs one of those 3 teams has to lose 5 more games than we do in the next 13 days.

Toronto loses two next week and then we sweep them.  Easy.

Personally, I think two starters is overkill and starts to block guys who need to keep developing. We're on track for 80+ wins with Lyles and Voth. Replace those two with Grayson and a Verlander-level guy, bring back Means, and we have a very competitive rotation. If there is an injury, we have assets to acquire another SP at the trade deadline.

I would send Hall back to AAA as a starter. Add to your list Rom, Baumann, and Zimmermann for depth. I also think Denoyer should start in AAA and could surprise people.

I’d like to see Hall out of the bullpen for 3ip at a time next year to get used to MLB hitters, work on his command, and up his innings total appropriately.   Means is not going to pitch more than 60ip or so.  I’d like to see two SP acquisitions, you can never have enough pitching, competition is a good thing, and anyone of those guys out of the BP becomes a real weapon.  We’ve been lucky this year with injuries in the grand scheme of things.

    Edit:  sorry off topic.

If Bradish can throw strikes consistently with his sided & curve and he continues to develop the FB & change he will be a force.  It’s a luxury that he isn’t our top pitching prospect.

  7. It’s exciting to think about the potential of the rotation next year: FA, Trade, Grayson, Bradish, Wells, Kremer, Hall & Means returning for second half.    If we are able to acquire two pitchers in the off-season, we will have some considerable high up-side depth in the rotation.  That’s 8 capable starters which is about what you need to get through a season competing for a playoff spot.
