  1. Didn’t say it was. I do personally enjoy Valdez’s story however and as it was noted by WC for this thread, he may get a shot at starting, maybe not a serious shot and it’s unlikely he makes anything of it, but it is something I will be watching. I hope he continues to do well in whatever role he ends up with.
  2. @OrioleDog already started a thread on it. But looks like Valdez will be stretched out after all. Should be interesting to watch. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Saturday that Cesar Valdez will be stretched out during Spring Training. Valdez was outstanding out of the Orioles bullpen in 2020 -- registering a 1.26 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 12/3 K/BB ratio while picking up three saves in 14 1/3 innings of work. The Orioles plan to build up his innings and see where he's at by the end of the spring before determining whether he'll be used as a starter or out of the bullpen. For those speculating on save chances in the O's bullpen, perhaps this means there could be one fewer arm to challenge Hunter Harvey for the ninth-inning gig.
  3. Ah I see! He says it at the very end of the article. He likes the way the ball is coming out of his hand!
  4. Mike Wright is back in the states: White Sox signed RHP Mike Wright to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 31-year-old hurler spent the 2020 season pitching for the NC Dinos in the Korea Baseball Organization, registering a 4.68 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 125/63 K/BB ratio over 157 2/3 innings (29 starts). He'll provide organizational depth in the starting rotation for the White Sox. Feb 13, 2021, 10:30 AM ET
  5. One ex-Oriole in, one ex-Oriole out: Mets designated RHP Brad Brach for assignment. It clears room on the 40-man roster for Jonathan Villar, who signed on Thursday. The right-hander exercised his $2.075 million option for 2021, but he'll get that money without playing for the Mets, it looks like. He struggled last year with a 5.84 ERA and 1.78 WHIP over 12 1/3 innings, but his previous success likely means he'll find a new home shortly. Feb 11, 2021, 6:08 PM ET
  6. Done deal, minor league deal with a spring training invite. I bet Nunez was ticked about no NL DH. Tigers signed 1B/DH Renato Nunez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Nunez was released by the Orioles back in late November despite registering an impressive .816 OPS with 12 home runs and 31 RBI over 52 games for Baltimore during the truncated 2020 campaign. The 26-year-old should get regular playing time this season in Detroit between first base and the designated hitter role.
  7. I don't think we see him as a starter, but Valdez is a nice and interesting story and I do hope he is decent out of the bullpen next year.
  8. Schoop back with the Tigers: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Tigers have re-signed Jonathan Schoop to a one-year, $4.5 million contract. Schoop had a nice 2020 season in Detroit, putting together a .278/.324/.475 batting line with eight home runs over 44 games. He also offers solid defense and is just 29, so that the Tigers were able to re-up with him on a modest one-year pact looks like a good get for the team. Schoop should hit in the first half of the batting order again in 2021. Source: Ken Rosenthal on Twitter Feb 5, 2021, 4:12 PM ET
  9. What was his promise? I follow him on Twitter but must have missed that.
  10. Thanks Frobby. I have an app associated with our local library which allows for digital delivery of books and just "borrowed" the audio book version of this biography. Now if I only had an excuse to leave the office and drive around for a few hours....
  11. Didn't read the MASN story, but one on The Athletic today, probably pretty similar (and everyone is probably aware of the pay wall). Cobb didn't blame the O's at all, mostly pointed to his injuries for his lack of performance and wished he contributed more. I was very excited for the Cobb signing, it is a shame about the way it went. I hope he and the Angels have a great year. I'll be rooting for them and the Padres on the other side. https://theathletic.com/2366093/2021/02/04/qa-with-alex-cobb-leaving-orioles-joining-angels-and-unfulfilled-expectations/?source=dailyemail
  12. Saw that and read the write up on Sixto Sanchez and if I read it correctly, he has FIVE plus pitches and above average control! Wow! I knew he was a top prospect, but wouldn't that be awesome to have a pitcher like that throwing for us next year. Or any year...
  13. Unfortunately, I think it is highly likely it will be Cobb. But will be interesting to follow.
  14. Orioles signed RHP Felix Hernandez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Jon Heyman of MLB Network says that King Felix will make $1 million if in the majors. Hernandez inked a minor league deal with the Braves last offseason before ultimately opting out, and he produced an ugly 5.42 ERA in his last three seasons in Seattle. However, he should have no trouble getting a rotation spot in Baltimore given the state of their pitching staff. Slated to turn 35 in April, Hernandez figures to struggle in 2021 in Camden Yards and in the AL East.
  15. Could be the AAA ball. I understand it’s too small a sample to think anything of it. Just was pleased with the slash line. I sure hope we have a full minor league season this year so we can see what all of the youngsters have!
  16. Yea not sure what Phillip thinks he saw and obviously no minor leaguers played “last” year but I assume he meant 2019. I was surprised to see how much better he did in his SSS at Norfolk than Bowie. Looks like he was walking a little less, maybe swinging the bat a little more, with a surge of confidence from the promotion? https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=bannon000ryl
  17. Hope this is ok to post, but this is the quote within his assessment of Kjerstad: "...cutting an under-slot deal with him so they could overpay two high school players in the fourth and fifth rounds."
  18. Law also uses the term "overpay" when talking about signing Kjerstad below slol to get Mayo and Baulmer. Wonder if that was just poor wording or if he really doesn't like that strategy? Or is it Law really does just hate this organization....
  19. O'day is a Yankee! Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports that the Yankees are in agreement on a deal with free agent reliever Darren O'Day. It's a one-year, $2.45 million contract with a dual option for 2022, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. O'Day posted a sharp 1.10 ERA, 0.796 WHIP, and 22/5 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 regular-season innings (19 appearances) last year with the Braves, but they ultimately opted to decline his $3.5 million club option for 2021. The 38-year-old righty should be able to grab a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day bullpen this spring. 20. Glad I’m not the only one!! Thanks for the updates and clarifications @Frobby Hopefully this can be all behind us once the winning starts again.
  21. Oh I agree and sounds like he has been a fairly awful human being at times.
  22. I know he is one of your favorite people. If not for that double, we may well have completely forgotten him by now.
  23. Jake gonna have some competition soon! Delmon Young hurled a scoreless inning Saturday for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League. Yes, you’re reading this correctly. The 35-year-old former major-league outfielder has made the transition to pitching in Australia and finally made his first appearance on the mound. He issued a pair of walks, but managed to induce an inning-ending twin-killing to keep the Brisbane Bandits off the scoreboard in the ninth inning. He last appeared in the major leagues with the Orioles back in 2015. Jan 24, 2021, 12:18 AM ET
  24. I think with the way Hays plays the game (all out) DL time is inevitable with him, but hoping he can average 130-140 games for a few years and hover around and .800 OPS. I am excited to see him start the year in CF and hope he makes it through the first couple of months unscathed. I do hope they get Diaz up soon next year, see what we have, if anything. Not much of any expectation for any of the others until we get Kjerstad up here (hopefully there is a full Milb season and he tears it up and rises quickly).
  25. Not so sure my decision to open up the Hangout today was such a good idea. This is just incredibly surprising news. I am more than a little concerned, but I am just not sure what I am concerned about. Wish someone form the Orioles would come out and talk openly and candidly about what is going with this organization but I know that’s not happening.
