If I were the O's, I'd contract Delmarva before Frederick just because I'd prefer that footprint in Frederick. Don't want the Nats to take it.

100% agree.  Frederick, Bowie, and Norfolk help them keep a foothold in places that otherwise might be lost.

Right now I see the O's with 4 starter.   Means, Cobb, Kremer and Akin.  And 5 starters that need to begin the season in AAA including Zimmerman, Baumann, Lowther, Wells and Smith.  Lopez right now is a placeholder starter.   Elias says he is going to add a veteran starter to two.   If he does maybe then Lopez moves to the pen or moves on.  But I would not get rid of Lopez before we see who Elias is able to sign.

    Is Lopez better than Eschelman?

I don’t get why Lopez is some definite to be on the 40 man.

I mean, I know he will be but he’s not good.  I wouldn’t keep him over a lot of the you get players we are talking about.

Totally agree.  It kind of made sense to see if he and Susler could improve last season, but now they need to let the other guys fight it out.

Same 10 as OH, except for Diaz instead of Westburg.   Certainly a credible list.

He listed Westburg as Best Defensive Infielder and Best Athlete in the system btw

Like I said, I think he got more at bats than expected by default.  Looking at 2003, the O’s paid Marty Cordova $3.1 mm to play in 9 games.   They paid $7 mm for David Segui to play in 67 games.   They gave a lot of at bats to Gibbons, Matos and Bigbie but there were holes in the lineup from those two veterans.

Let’s just say I understand your problem with the whole philosophy of signin Surhoff, but there were other moves made in those years that were far, far worse.    They paid Tony Batista $6.5 mm that year.

Maybe the rest of the team could have asked Surhoff things like, “How are you able to hit .300 when you are 39?” Or “How do you have a .350 OBP when you are 39 and don’t hit for power anymore?”

Surhoff kind of gets a bad rap here.   His first two return seasons he was paid $1.0 mm and $800 k and produced 0.7 and 1.4 rWAR in part time play.    Both seasons, he played more than expected because guys like Bigbie, Matos and Gibbons kept either getting hurt or underperforming.   But he gave us pretty decent bang for the buck in those years.    He came crashing down to earth in 2005 at age 40 when the O’s brought him back for a third season.

I was really impressed with Surhoff’s hitting skills his last few years.  He was a tough out and was almost 40.

Does the claiming of Sanchez mean that Elias is going to try to win in 2021?

Up until now Elias has gone cheap.  And almost completely focused on the long term future.

Sanchez is not a long term addition but Elias seems to be willing to risk arbitration with him that might cost the team between 4m and 6m.  He made 4.6m in 2019 and was projected to make 6.2m last year before he  was DFA'd.

This appears to signal a change in Elias' approach.    Its a bigger expenditure  than committing 2.5m plus a 500K buyout to Iglesias.

While it certainly does not mean Elias will spend big on free agents it does look like he is spending to upgrade the infield defense which will benefit the young pitchers and the team's ability to win games.

    Another item......

I see that Roch and MLBTR are reporting that the O's have control of Sanchez until after the 2022 season.   But Cots Contracts  and Baseball Reference both say he has 5.040 service time which make him a FA after the 2021 season.     Someone is wrong here.

Iglesias, Sanchez, Valaika, Martin and whoever ends up at 1B feels like a better all around infield than last season.  I assume Bannon and Urias will get a chance as well.  Tavara is close too.

Rosenthal just had the Cash interview postgame, laying out the critique, particularly the bit about Anderson letting in runs six straight games.

Cash gave the company line, "Everything enters decisions; we value information; makes sense to avoid any pitcher facing a Dodger hitter three times".

One specific in Cash quote about Anderson having been "arguably best reliever in MLB last 2 years" an interesting choice of timeframe.  I do think a fair question is how adroitly, if at all, were Rays able to reassess guys day to day effectiveness.   Kenley's arguably best reliever in MLB last TEN years, and ya know...

I guess gotta dance with who brung ya.

Snell - "I believe in me, I didn't walk nobody.  For most of that game I was dominating every outcome possible.   I felt confident in how I adjusted, and what I was going to be able to do a third time"

Dodgers top 4 were 1-for-16 with 11K his four passes through the order.   A-Rod says these guys are ruining MLB.

I am prepping for youth league playoffs.  Changed some stuff and then actually said out loud “ Nope.  You dance with the one that brought ya.”  And changed everything back ?

  9. We will be staying in Ocean City for Thanksgiving (the northern end).  Our condo is near the Crab Bag.  Are the crabs there good?  Crushes?  We are on 135th on the beach.  Any suggestions for anything would be appreciated, we’d rather not cook ?.  If there is a place that does Thanksgiving  food we are open to that as well.

The stadium is 30 years old.  Unfortunately that was more the norm back then.

Tampa- St Pete is the #12 market in the US.

The comment about folks dying is pretty tasteless to be honest.

I don't think it was a total no-brainer that the team would struggle to this degree with attendance when the franchise was awarded.

People from DC drove to Baltimore for a long time.  I would have assumed people from Tampa would drive to St. Pete but they don’t.  They do watch the games on TV though.  Ratings are good.

I think he’s saying a little league aged kid can go to a training facility and get this data.

If you go somewhere for a lesson, this is included.  The place Elias went for pitching lessons in high school does it, zero chance he isn’t aware.

IF colleges (and high schools) play in the spring. Otherwise it's a COMPLETE blind choice...

Any decent baseball training facility has data.  Even Little League kids are given things like launch angle and exit velocity.  It just isn’t info that we can get.  So not completely blind.

So it looks like Happ, Paxton, and possibly Gary Sanchez, won’t be back next year. I don’t remember that Sanchez was a very good catcher, but we don’t have very good catchers either, and he has a far better Pedegree than either of ours has or will have.

Happ is old but good. I always wanted Dan to sign him, but no...

I’m not sure how much we need an over the hill pitcher, but it’s certainly worth investigating.

Paxton is not over the hill but is looking at possible TJ surgery. With that in mind he would be cheap, and again, I don’t know but we might have progressed to the point where we don’t need guys like him, but if he’s healthy, he would be the best we have.

    What says the crowd?

The Orioles already have two young catchers who hit fine with questionable defense. Both are cheap.  I’d give Sanchez a pass.

Frederick is on the list because over the years it has fallen into disrepair.  Its sub standard.   The City has not spend to keep it upgraded.  It has almost nothing to do with Aberdeen.   I don't see Frederick going without a team.  Not with a 4200 per game fan base and being within a hour of Washington and Baltimore.  One of them is going to make a case to have an affiliated team there.

I’d love to see some MLB team fund an indie league team, like when some NFL teams used Arena teams as a farm team for couple of years before they made it illegal.

    https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board/2020-in-season-prospect-list/farm-ranking?sort=-1,1&type=100&filter=&pos=&team=

THE BOARD now has BAL in a 9/10/11/12 tier at $255M in value give or take 5 either way, along with SEA/MIN/TOR.  Everyone else $273 and up, or $232  and down.

The 40+ to 45 grade bumps for both SP only moved them individually from $3M to $4M.   This was my first time seeing the big spike in FG estimations when reaching the 50 FV level - I guess its perspective is, very broadly speaking, you are worthwhile or worthless.

Among 45's, Longenhangen, bullish on Vavra, still has him ahead of both Akin/Kremer.

He drops Baumann behind Akin, but still ahead of Kremer, and also has Kremer/Yusniel the "last" of the 45's, behind even Westburg/Stowers.

The back end of the list expanded a lot over the season.  Headed in the right direction, very encouraging.
