A lot of you have Rutschman DHing on days he is not catching.  What if, heaven forbid, he turns out to be not a very good hitter? He just becomes a regular starting catcher that suits on the bench as a backup on days he is rested? At that point, you need a more permanent DH with a bat.

They've already optioned him once this year, so clearly he has an option this year.  Only reason he'd be DFA'd would be to clear 40 man space for someone not already on it.

Yep, they think he’ll clear is my guess  (likely will).

I don’t trust any one advanced defensive metric, so I like to look at all of them:

    Rtot: +4

Rdts: +9 (note: this stat feeds into dWAR)

    UZR: +2.1

OAA: +4 (translates to +3 RAA)

Fangraphs def. +5.5 (7th in MLB).

To explain just a little, dWAR is a combination of positional adjustment, and how many defensive runs saved at a position.   Mateo gets a positional adjustment of +2 and Rdrs (also known as Rfield) of +9.   That gives him +11 runs which translates to +1.2 wins (dWAR).

Over the winter, Fangraphs changed its Fangraphs defense metric to use Statcast’s OAA to measure range.   Fangraphs defense, like dWAR, has a positional adjustment.  It also has a separate component for infielders for efficiency in turning double plays.   He’s 7th in defense as measured by Fangraphs, 4th among shortstops.

So, there is some variance in how good Mateo’s defense has been depending on what stats you prefer.   However, the good news is that all these stats are solidly in the plus column.   Often, you’ll see them pointing in different directions.   So, you can have a pretty high degree of confidence that Mateo has been a plus defender to this point of the season.  And I for one wasn’t really expecting that.

They are not going to be real buyers. Elias is going to trade away a couple of players, probably fewer than some posters suggest, and get some ok and probably really young prospects back. I was going to say you shouldn't get worked up about it and set yourself up for disappointment, but I'm pretty sure that advice will fall on deaf ears ;)

Read my post. First line. Not saying they should be real buyers but a small piece or two would be a good message (and can still sell a couple, but really what will you get for Odor, lol).

  5. I gotta think this is the end of the road for Lowther unless he’s lights out (even if he is effective which is unlikely …he will likely will be DFA-Ed).

If he gets in the game, we may lose 14-4, he’s been atrocious in Norfolk this year, prepare yourself, very disappointing move.

I was thinking the same thing about Tucker. Seems like he would be worth a shot.

Famous gf and has stolen a ton of bases in the minors, only 25. Why not? I like him more than Grenier.

  7. I strongly believe we should be buyers, albeit smaller moves. It would send a great message to the team, players & fans. Trade a prospect or two Elias feels won’t turn the corner. Some rentals at the deadline won’t cost much as many of you know. You can also be a seller for the right deal but I am not trading Santander when his value is down, strongly believe in him. Again, if you want to win, you got to keep good players. No clue why Mountcastle is being discussed to trade. I think this org has been miserable for so long all fans want to do is sell high on guys and have given up on winning, depressing.

I was totally wrong about keeping him in the pen. He has probably been our best and most consistent starter. I love that the throws strikes and doesn't make mistakes. His K/9 is way down from last year but that hasn't hurt him yet.

Same. I thought we should have kept him in the pen as well. Glad to see it!!!

That’s what I want to see but I think we want to see Hall go a little deeper and GR get his service clock manipulated more.

I sure am tired of the losing, and really hope it stops next season, but I think we’re a year behind where we all hoped we would be.

People calling for Hall to be recalled clearly aren’t watching him pitch on milb.tv. He’s not ready.

5 scoreless innings with 4 K's in his most recent start yesterday. Came here to post this just for Mr. "Not A Nugget". I despise Buck Showalter, btw. Such an overrated manager.

Ha. Buck is the best. Just don’t give him Ubaldo.

Curious fact: This year at Norfolk, Gutierrez has started at first base almost as many games (six) as at third base (seven). Previously in the minors, it was 14 vs. 483.

Urias's entire package (offense, defense, position versatility) trumps him. If you move Urias to second, then you have to drop Odor, who is currently one of the O's most important players, and commit to Mateo at SS. I think both of these are questionable moves.

Well Odor was dead weight earlier in the season so it was a different calculation.
