I’m getting on you because you have now mentioned Lawlar 30 times in various threads - yes, I counted.   I’ve got nothing against your opinion that we should have chosen Lawlar.  I just don’t need to hear about it all the time.   Simple as that.

I will try to tone it down for you:) Agree to disagree.

Going 1.4M or so under on Cowser got us Rhodes (about 500K over) and Willems (about 800K over).   It's a bit early but Rhodes looks good and Willems is struggling as an 19 (I think his birthday is today or a couple of days ago) year old in full season ball.   A bit early to judge things although it seems as if you don't need to wait.

We all agree that Lawlar is off to a great start in full season ball.    We all agree that it won't look good if Lawlar turns into an all-star SS and Cowser flops and Rhodes/Willems turn into nothing.   What we don't seem to agree on is that it's too early to call.     You seem to have made up your mind.  You keep reminding us every chance you get.

Again, it is because the voices against the pick (and critical of Elias in general) are quiet, probably because of harassment like this. I don't see you and Frobby getting on Tony, why is that? People don't bother to post because they know Frobby and that ilk will say "hey, too early to judge"...same crap I read on here about Flanagan (RIP)/Duquette, and AM (who except for amazing trades, did nothing else well). Elias could grab Jones this year and another great pick in the supplemental (would Fabian fall that much?? doubtful is my guess) would makes things much rosier in my eyes. Oh and SOME effort in the offseason, albeit an inexpensive one.

It's been reported.  I think Kiley McDaniel talked about it but it was also known last summer when the Red Sox offered 2M and Fabian didn't sign.  The Red Sox took him one pick before.  Fabian and the Orioles had a deal in place for 3M.   I don't have a link or source at the moment.   Others on here have confirmed it as well.

Thanks! I hadn't heard that before.

However this discussion is 100% based on results.  If Lawler was under performing, this discussion doesn’t happen.  Austin Martin was the consensus BPA in 2020.  I don’t here many complaining now about us not taking him with his sub 700 ops in AA. The BPA is not the same for every club.  If it is a very close call, many times a tie breaker will be $.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me I try to be consistent and admit when I am wrong. I would have taken Lacy (who I wanted) OR Martin over Kerjstad. Regardless how that turns out, I think that was the best move BUT HUGE difference between that draft and the Lawlar vs CC conversation. Kerjstad got us Baumer. What did CC get us again? Lawlar >>>>>Martin or Lacy more than likely. That's the one single decision (CC over Lawlar) that got me questioning Elias' judgement.

Fine, but it seems stupid to me for you to believe that Elias viewed Lawlar as a future All-star ML SS, and passed for monetary reasons.   He was willing to pay Fabian 1.12M over slot and he's a guy who carries a lot of risk.   If he felt Lawlar was a pretty sure thing, I'm pretty sure, he would have paid up.    It would be dumb not to.

I hadn't heard this about Fabian, can you provide more info? Source?

You need to first stop saying "this board" as if the entire board feels one way. We have a diverse group of people with different thoughts. You want an echo chamber of fanboys, try out Twiiter.

Honestly Sir, except for you, I don't see many critical of moves/decisions other than Corn and a few others I enjoy but definitely a minority. But point taken.

BPA is an oversimplification.   You may think Elias is an idiot.   I do not.    Can he make mistakes?   Did he make a mistake?    Yes and maybe.    He determined that taking Cowser and using the saved money on Rhodes and Willems made more sense than taking Lawlar.    I'm not saying that was the right thing to do.   I'm saying that a lot went into making that decision.   It's not as simple as saying Lawlar was rated higher than Cowser and they should have taken him.    One of the problems I have with you and SG is that even if the results are favorable to Elias you won't give him credit for doing it his way but you're happy to pile blame on him if the results (so far very early results) go against him.

I don’t think he is an idiot. That is def not accurate. I also get the strategy quite well but don’t agree with the approach and I would give him credit. I would have cut Odor & Owings long ago….Odor has been hot as of late…

Unfortunately,  even if Lawlar flames it in AA and Cowser becomes an all-star, Nelson will insist it proves nothing and that Lawlar should have been the pick.  He's right and Elias is wrong no matter what happens.  Lol

This is not accurate. My point: take bpa. I have nothing against Elias other than fans seem to be in a semi-cult around him & his performance.  I always appreciate your takes regardless though, you are a great poster.

  9. 2 hours ago, Sports Guy said:

Well, I agree with him if the premise of his argument is that you take BpA.  I believe they passed on a higher player on their board to take a cheaper option to do other stuff later.  I think that’s poor and to me, even if Cowser turns out to be the better player, I will judge the process and not result.

For me, it really has nothing to do with Cowser himself.  It’s the totality of everything that bothers me.

Thank you. I have noticed this argument on here a lot recently. If I am wrong, I say I am wrong (trust me that I am wrong a lot, ask my wife:) but the main point is exactly that: take the bpa (Lawlar in this discussion) and if that doesn’t work, take responsibility.

I liked the Garcia & Martin (and Santander) rule 5 picks A LOT. 2/3 seem to not have worked but not going to be dishonest about my opinion.

Regardless, take bpa. Stop being cute.

You have to accept that some fans are just that, fans. They are are always going to think their team is doing things the right way no matter what. I give them the facts and let them then make their excuses. lol

I try to remind myself that this board doesn’t represent all Os fans:) We all want the Os to win or wouldn’t spend so much time here but the endless excuses for obvious missteps is beyond frustrating. Hence, why I feel the need to point them out. 1983 was a long time ago….missing on first round picks/flawed draft strategy is really not going to get us any closer to a championship.

I wanted Lawler at the time of the draft too. It’s too early to say that Cowser was a bad pick. After two months, that’s silly, honestly. There is a long way to go.

Lawler was thought to have a slow bat compared to other elite bats by many teams last year. He had a lot of swing and miss as well. Lawler had a shoulder injury last season that shut him down shortly after signing. There were many factors into the decision, the bonus demands were part of the equation.

Development is a process. Cowser does not seem to have taken to the Orioles philosophy thus far. It may just be poor communication by the coaches. We’ll see what happens with this. Personally, I think Cowser will hit for high average, high OBP and average power. More 2B than HR, gap to gap type power.

My bigger issue is people making endless excuses for the franchise when they know better….. instead of calling them fair and holding poor decisions accountable.

Please stop with the Jordan Lawlar stuff.  It’s over.  We didn’t draft him.  We don’t need to be reminded every other day that you think Lawlar was a better choice.  It’s noted.  Let’s just follow what Cowser does and hope for the best.

GMs make bad decisions all the time but the reluctance to call this one out boggles my mind.

  13. 2 hours ago, Tony-OH said:

Basically it sounds like he's saying diplomatically that the Orioles hitting philosophy screwed him up and he's trying to go back to what made him successful. In his last 10 games he's got a 10-6 BB-k ratio but is batting just .192 with only three extra base hits.

Looked terrific last year! Longer we are awful, we draft higher! Genius! Friendly reminder Jordan Lawlar tearing it up, he was the pick. Awful decision regardless how it turns out.

I'd like to see Owings DFA'ed and Martin up for him. RIght now, with Gutierrez on the IL and Vavra still rehabbing, there's a bit of flexibility. Grenier could be DFA'ed, but I would think Dorrian and Cullen are cut before Bannon or Martin.

Absurd Owings is on this team.

I cringe every time I see Owings in the field or at the plate.  Richie Martin is having a good season at Norfolk; why not give him a chance to do Owings' job?  What does Owings bring to the table?

Been saying this much of the season!🎯

Where would Andujar play for the O's.   He is not good defensively at 3B.  He is not getting at bat at 1B,  He will not play over Hays or Santander.  At best he is a bench player which he is unhappy with for the Yankees.

He already has 3 year of major league service so he is in his first arbitration year making 1.3m.  He is not going to be happy being optioned to AAA.  That is where he is now and he is asking to be traded.

He does not fit with the O's.

Wildcard rocks, lol. He always makes great points!

    Pretty good outing today, 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 9 K’s.  Got through 5 in a tidy 72 pitches, 48 for strikes.

Yes!!!!! Much better and less walks!!!
