  1. Elias didn’t draft a pitcher this year until what round? He missed on two first round pitchers in Houston so has come to the conclusion, just pass on top level pitchers in the draft, particularly the first round. Doesn’t sound like decision making based on data, sounds like decision making based on fear.

We are worse than a dog-shite team.  This is Single A level at best.

What I find funny is everyone excited about the farm system when we have been beyond awful for how long? And not just awful, embarrassing. Pardon the Interruption on ESPN laughing about our franchise today in prime time.

Who couldn’t rebuild the farm in this losing scenario? In fact, his approach has caught the eye of the commissioners office it’s so obvious.

And in a town with a tremendous winning football franchise that takes BPA, Elias cuts coupons and many on this board think he is a genius.  Why do so many love this guy? Boggles my mind.

Have fun turning that losing culture around.

On a side note:  if I am Brandon Hyde and am replaced when they actually try ….furious!

Because you are constantly acting like flawed players don’t have a spot in the majors or on contending teams and you couldn’t be more wrong about it.

Sure, pitchers X, Y and Z may not be here but there will be guys just like them Who will be.

Guys who suck at defense will be on good teams.  Guys who can’t hit well will be on good teams.  It’s what happens and always has Happened and always will happen.

    Excellent assessment.

This always makes me laugh but for some reason I like both of these players. McKenna has actually hit in AAA this year. SSS though. Stewart is just going to always be streaky.

McKenna has potential. Stewart is an OF/PH for the NL maybe…

80/80 FB on the scouting scale. Fangraphs had him as the CWS #26 prospect to start the season. Touched 100 mph in his MLB debut last season. He’s had TJ surgery and other arm issues.

When drafted he was seen has a big time late inning relief prospect.

He’s definitely the type of player to take a flyer on.

Spot on and fast tracked indeed after reading this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zack_Burdi

I don’t know any scouts.   And I don’t doubt at all that right now this guy is looking like the consensus no. 1 pick.   I just feel that a year is a long time and things can change.   We’ve seen that happen numerous times.

It’s interesting that, as clear a no. 1 as Harper was, he only ranks 4th in that draft in rWAR right now.   Sale, Machado and deGrom are all ahead of him by 5+ rWAR.    It still wouid not be surprising if Harper overtook them, especially the two pitchers, who are older.   So I don’t think anyone would complain that the Harper pick wasn’t a good one.   But I’m rooting for Manny to stay on top of him.

Same! Still love Manny! Agreed, scouts aren’t always right, clearly. Just heard a friend in the scouting biz refer to Green as Harper-esque which means to me the scouting community loves his potential. But you are right, a lot can happen.

I also think, as another poster mentioned, if we are allowed to trade picks, Elias will def do that, no doubt about it lol. TBD with CBA.

Interesting claim. Former 1st rd pick in 2016. Has only pitched 125 innings in the minors. The CWS really fast tracked him to the majors. Maybe he could become something with more time developing in the minors.

Astute analysis. Most innings pitched at one place was 38? And a former first rounder? Yeah, sounds like an intelligent grab to me.

I feel like I hear that about some guy about 3 out of every 5 drafts.   If we end up at 1-1 (not a foregone conclusion despite our current death spiral), I do hope there’s a clear choice and we pick him, as we did with Adley.   By the way, that’s looking like a very strong class, and not all classes are equal.

Have you spoken to any professional scouts? I am not one nor do I know (Tony may have some insights) but from what I am hearing, he isn't like everyone else and is a legit #1. But again, your point is right, things can happen: injuries, holes in his profile exposed, etc.

  9. What are the odds Elias actually selects Greene and doesn't go underslot?

Also, one thing I think that is important to bring up is that when Showalter came here he talked about winning is a cultural thing and he even said Spring Training games were important to set a tone. Be competitive in all games. Clearly Elias doesn't follow this thought process....

How do you turn this massive dumpster fire around when some prospects arrive? Do you think that will be super easy? Does Elias have any experience in doing this or just as a scouting director?

A million things can happen that change the picture.   It doesn’t have to involve a catastrophe for the prospective no. 1.    I’m not saying Greene won’t be the presumed BPA next year on draft day, but the odds he will be are probably 50-50 at best.

Scouts like him a lot. I heard Harpers scouting profile mentioned as an equal bar(diff profile of course), high praise bc they had him penciled in as greatest player ever.

I bet your brain exploded when you learned that Fangraphs has us at number 1.

For what it's worth, a top heavy farm system is much more valuable than a moderately balanced one.  You can only field so many players, and the true top prospects like Adley and Grayson are the ones most likely to give your team big production.  Yeah there might be a diamond in the rough somewhere that might surprise you, but by and large the bottom end of the prospect list is filled with role players that might produce 1/10 of what someone like Adley will (hopefully) produce.

I just pray he takes Greene next year with the number 1 pick. I am scared crapless he will go cheap yet again.

Being a top rated farm system and winning or completely different things. Plus, sale of the team is a huge factor in the timeline. What if Peter lives another 5 years? Adley might be traded in that scenario b4 he hits free agency.

Good to see the improvement but how can they not improve after watching a painfully unwatchable product after how many years?

I came here to ask why McKenna  was just option instead of Stewart. McKenna is a valuable defensive replacement, even if he doesn’t hit any better than you or I. But “valuable defensive replacement“ has meaning. The only thing Stewart has on his side of the ledger is that he’s a first round pick, and that is very weak sauce.

    Yep
