Jones - "I'm not an accountant...You Have to Spend Some of the Money"

They're not my estimates they are baseball references. Take it up with them. Who knows who will be tendered contracts and who wont and what the actual arb. figures .You don't. Just a guestimate. the point being we are going to have to pay for these players somehow, and more likely through 2017 the cost will rise.

Yeah but you ****ed it up. The actual numbers from baseball-reference are:

2016 - $84 MM

2017 - $104 MM

2018 - $107 MM

Which makes a lot more sense.

I'm not sure why you (and perhaps others) seem to take the view that Jones is just a mere player, an employee, and just doesn't understand the workings of management. I'm retired now, but when I was working (I worked in IT as an applications programmer), most people where I worked did understand the workings of our management because, for the most part, it was explained to us. We were not considered "mere IT people who just don't understand management's goals."

Being a long-term employee, signed for several years, I would expect that AJ would care about long term ramifications about the team that he works for. It's clear from AJ's comments that he cares very much about the team's long-term future.

As for DD, I don't think that DD secretly was trying to help the Blue Jays in the 2015 off season. I just believe that DD made some errors in baseball judgment.

The vast majority of players don't understand how decisions are made in the FO, or why. I'm sure Jones cares about long-term issues, but I doubt very much he's looking at and considering the same data the FO is when reaching conclusions about what he thinks the team should be doing.

He is also a union member, and a high profile player advocate.

You will never see a well paid "star" advocate a conservative approach to team spending. In the short term or the long term. You will never hear one say, "We are a middle of the road team, it would be better to trade all of the higher priced members of my team. Don't trade me, I'll stay. But just fill the other 24 slots with cost effective players and give the rookies a chance."

What do you think the reaction would be from the fan base if the orioles go into a full rebuilding mode? Trade Jones, Britton,

Hardy etc for prospects.

No change in the casual fan base. The hard core fans,as evidenced by message boards, will back the front office and ownership over the players, as usual. The everyday fan who goes to games and watches MASN will support them team until it losses. But O's fans root for the name on front of the jersey not back. Great fans e en though the team has made 4 playoff appearances in 30 years

This team needs Davis to re-sign, add a couple of solid pitchers(maybe one lefty starter) and try and add a decent bat for LF or RF. They COULD no re-sign Davis but instead go after someone like Cespedes, but to me its the same scenario, not good enough. I'll say this, if they think Mancini is ready to thrive in the big leagues with power, they are mistaken. Power bats are hard to come by and we can't lose two 40+HR hitters in consecutive years without alienating our true fans. Simply put, these fans deserve better.

How long have you been an Orioles fan Roy? Since 1961 for me.

I think being the fan of any team quickly becomes more like a marriage than a summer fling and it's easy overstate the dire consequences of not signing this or that player.

I wish AJ would try to influence Davis to accept a team-friendly deal and stay with the team, at least as much as he is trying to influence the organization. I think he has at least a 1-2% chance of success with Davis, as opposed to zero with the organization.

Yes, I think it goes both ways. If AJ is sincere that he wants to keep the band together and thinks they can win (and I believe he is), then he should be talking with both sides in the negotiation.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
