Just spitballing. Mullins can't seem to hit anything right now, Hays was nothing special. Stowers had some success left on left. Why not give him ABs against a LH? He's going to be worse than Mullins?
I think you're overthinking it. IIRC there were like 3-4 players (Holliday, Jones, Johnson, Green?) that could conceivably have been chosen 1:1. Elias took who he thought was the best player.

Perhaps a better question would have been... Is Stowers likely to do better against LHs than Mullins? Perhaps a 700 OPS or better?
Does Stowers has good reverse splits? I hate having Kjerstad as the odd man out, but what about playing Hays/Stowers against LH and Mullins/Cowser against RHs. If Mullins continues to slump could Cowser also share time in CF?
