For me, the rest of the season isn’t about catching the Rays. I don’t think we’re good enough to do that and they still look like they’re a machine. The rest of the season is about kicking the Yankees and Jays down as far as possible, IMO.

I don’t think there’s a realistic chance that Mountcastle gets sent down but I wouldn’t be upset if he did. Or if he got traded. Whatever.

I’ve been a supporter of his but the lack of offense is making it hard to continue to do so, I agree. I still believe the glove is elite/great enough to warrant playing time. I said it before, I’ll say it here: it’s hard to have him and Mountcastle in the same lineup. But Mateo brings that glove to a key defensive position, he should get priority. That said, I believe Mateo would have a day to day role on this team as constructed. The thing that makes it hard to keep him as the starting SS is that there are guys in the system who are putting pressure on they organization to make a decision about what to do. If these guys weren’t in the system and producing at a high level, I’d be pretty satisfied with an all glove/no hit SS who can still deliver a 3+ WAR season. But that’s not the reality of the situation.

The Hernandez/Gibson matchup should be good. I think Hernandez is better than the W/L record and ERA indicates. The WHIP is 1.09, he’s striking out over 12 per 9.

I’m surprised whenever a starting pitcher outside of Wells gives us a good start.

It would be a big boost to this club if he’s able to replicate the success he had today or have similar results from here on out.

I think he trusts it. I think they get too cute with the splitter and now the slider.

I just don’t think the splitter works that well that often. Seems like it’s been more off than on this year. The fastball is almost always legit. I hate seeing him screw around with the slider or continue to hang splitters on the off-chance he gets one to dive-bomb.

Keep him down. Until the delivery is repeatable and he can hit the zone consistently. I’m with @Tony-OH, I don’t care about missed bats against minor leaguers. I’m not impressed by getting Franchy to chase pitches.
