  1. Obviously, we’ll stay away from politics.  Trump declined an invitation to throw out the first pitch in the home opener in 2017, citing scheduling conflicts.

For this postseason, Aaron Barrett threw out the first pitch for the WC game.  Medal of Honor recipient David Bellavia did it for game 3 NLDS.  Alex Ovechken game 4.  WNBA star Elena Delle Donne will throw out game 3 of the NLCS.

I would not expect to see Trump or Pence do it.

I couldn't make it up for the end of the game, but through Game 1 and the first half of Game 2, I couldn't help but wonder why Houston is struggling so much to actually plate runs.  This is a good offense, right? The Cardinals are having the same problem, only scoring one run in two games because of a misplayed fly ball in center.  I get that these are good pitchers, but they actually had ERAs during the season.  It can't be that suddenly every pitcher is unhittable in the playoffs....especially not against good teams that have good hitters.  Maybe it is a case of hitters trying to do too much, but the strike-outs are awful.  Teams' refusal to play small ball and advance runners are going to eventually cost someone a playoff game.

The shadows really affected game 2 of the Nationals/Cardinals game.  That’s an extremely tough situation to hit in.

Took me a long time, but I just finished Noah Feldman’s The Three  Lives of James Madison: Genius, Partisan, President.   It has a really good discussion of the drafting and negotiation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as well as the arguments made to convince the states to ratify the Constitution and the early fights over its interpretation.   It’s a bit of a dense read, but it’s ultimately very informative and worthwhile.

Is there a chapter about the time when he beat Tech in Blacksburg?

  4. People like to point to high first round picks - Strasburg, Rendon, and Harper as reasons why the Nationals are good.

But they also had big successes with international FAs -Soto, Robles, Suero.  They’ve kept the homegrown star- Zimmerman instead of letting him walk like Markakis.  He doesn’t live up to his contract, but that doesn’t prevent them from going after 9 figure free agents like Corbin.  They make trades on both sides of the equation—pitching prospects for Eaton, Souza for Turner, and they swap a late arbitration number 4 starter for Sanchez and move Roark for a young BP arm who got two big outs last night.  They lose trade after trade on relievers, but don’t quit trying and end up with Doolittle and Hudson.  They match youth with “old” FAs on short deals-Adams, Kendrick, and Dozier.

Rizzo uses all avenues to acquire talent to make his team better.  His moves don’t always work out, but it doesn’t discourage him from trying them again to get better results.

They’ve also stayed competitive with guys entering FAs and don’t panic about trading them early.  They let them walk, collect the pick, and replace them.

That team lost because their bullpen imploded.    Meanwhile, Strasburg is still healthy 7 years later post-TJ, so I’m not going to say their decision was wrong.    They shut him down well before the post-season.

Exactly.  Maybe the orioles can get Matt Harvey and Kris Medlen as they are tough guys and Strasburg is a porcelain doll.

I would love to have a player with as much plate presence, swagger, and confidence as Soto.  That dude is going to be an October beast for years.

Kershaw.....just not a guy who you want in the playoffs.  His playoff history is clearly something he can’t shake, and at this point it has to be almost all mental.

What’s the narrative if Roberts doesn’t send him back out there in the eighth?

It’d be two times in three years that he came out of the bullpen in an elimination game to preserve a series.

I can't see them paying Villar that kind of dough.  Looks to me like Richie Martin is the favorite to open the season at SS.  I like Villar, and appreciate his energy and talent, but I can't see them paying that much on a team that's not expected to win.

If Villar is nontendered, any chance he gets a deal with a $10M AAV?  I have a hard time believing that.

Would be cheaper for the club for his last 3 years, assuming this year is a benchmark on what would we should expect from Trey offensively and defensively if they leave him at 1B; then we'd be keeping him for most likely under market value for the remaining years of the deal if we consider the market for 1st base bats who hit FA around the time Mancini is expected to hit FA in 2023.

So what would be the framework of your proposed deal?  I’ll play the role of Mancini.

    1. Depends on how much you like Mancini as a player, and I'm not convinced he's got more than 5 great years in him, but...

    2. Obviously Longoria took his contract before his rookie year so that's an extreme example, but lets hypothetically say Mancini was the kind of guy to get a contract like 6/100 in free agency, but you can buy him out now for 9/80 ... his money is 1) a big check guaranteed now and 2) eliminates his risk of losing everything to injury or ineffectiveness .... at the expense of $20M.

Your scenario would be giving up more than $20M because he’d get paid arbitration salaries in the first three years, right?

Only Britton is still with the team to which he was traded, so, from that standpoint, the O's "won."   I'm sure it was discussed a while back what if Manny was dealt the prior offseason?   Could Dan have obtained more, at the time?  Who knows what else was offered for any of them in July?

O’Day has pitched in three playoff games for the Braves.

  11. I voted Betts.  I’d like to see what he can do in CF if he gets traded.

If I had to pick a SP, I’d go with Cole.

Robles and Bichette are two guys that I think will be in the discussion over the next five years.  Robles had a 4.1 rWAR compared to Harper’s 4.2.  His defense in CF Will pad his total while he learns to hit at the MLB level.

Mookie Betts seems like a pretty likely non-tender candidate in Boston.   Does that change the math for anyone?    :)

Betts, Rendon, Cole, and Strasburg.  “Hey, it’s not my money!” ?

    Ummmm, yikes.

Is Keenum done as the starter for the immediate future?   I didn't watch the game but Haskins's line looks real bad.........

It was bad.  One of his picks was actually a really good throw with good anticipation.  Davis turned around and knocked the ball in the air.  Timing is off, which is understandable.

Haskins has tools, but he’ll likely see a coaching change.

Sixth season coaching and they still can’t line up correctly or get a play call off in time.

Defense had some takeaways, but a rookie QB was able to move the ball without their playmaker.

It’s beginning to get as bad as the John Beck year.
