Agree with the Hemingway books - Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Really enjoyed Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.

Two of my favorites not mentoned above are Trinity and Mila 18 both by Leon Uris.

    Watership Down by Richard Adams.

Just finished Sound and the Fury.  Then read some more about it.  Yeah...I’m not smart enough to understand Faulkner.

I’m going to try All the King’s Men this fall.

I think the article touched on all the important facets of the season:

     - we've been among the worst teams in baseball, but not embarrassing - save for the HRs Allowed record

     - farm system has leaped from 26th to 12th.

     - Mancini and Means have been very good major league developments

The article did not mention two other storylines IMO:

     - the trading of Yastremski who is flourishing with the SF Giants and would be a comically poor development for a rebuilding team if he continues to produce.  I get that our FO considered him outside of our top five OF prospects at the time of the trade, but …. wow ...

     - the development of Santander who could be a major piece of our long term puzzle

Loved the Cashner best use as civil war extra.

Good points and comments.  A couple questions: What would the likely farm ranking be if we had a 5-10 pick instead of the number 1 overall?  And will the new regime get the credit with Santander, or will  Duquette?  I know that he battled injuries since the Rule V.

Watching what is going on in the vicinity of Nats Park, I think it’s been really good for development in that part of town.   It used to be kind of a wasteland and now there are lots of office buildings and apartments being built there.    They opened it right as the 2008 recession hit, so the development did not occur as quickly as the city probably had hoped, but it’s been booming down there for several years.    I don’t know if that would have happened anyway without the stadium bring there, but I tend to think the stadium helped quite a lot.

The area has really changed in the past three or four years and is getting really nice.  Transportation has a really nice office around the corner that has attracted other offices.  Then you have the Wharf development nearby and that area has done a 180.  Wish I had invested there.

Baseball reference projects next year's payroll at $88.7M

Mancini, Bleier, Alberto and Castro go into arbitration along with Bundy, Villar, Givens...over $40M estimated in arbitration cases.   Cobb and Davis are guaranteed $37-38 (42%) of the estimated 2020 payroll whether they play or not.  In the case of Cobb, there still remains hope that he'll have some value.
    Davis....:deadhorse:

I have a hard time believing those seven will combine for $40M in arbitration with four of them Arb 1.  Givens and Bundy made a shade less than $5M combined.  I can’t see Bleier and Castro making more.

Giolito with an impressive outing today, a CG SO of the Twins....IP 9 H 3 SO 12 BB 0.

Nice to see him living up to what I thought of him in high school when I scouted him years ago in CA.

Can you speak to what he’s doing differently this year compared to last season?

The Rangers drafted Sammy Sosa I think and Kenny Rogers and Kevin Brown. Lot of good players.

Im kind of surprised at how little relationship there is between successful drafting and world championships. The Cardinals have won what, one WS since ‘95? The D-Backs won one but most of the top teams have none.

All three of those guys were pre 95.  Guys they drafted in this time period include Teixeira, Adrian Gonzalez, Michael Young, Ian Kinsler, Hank Blalock, RA Dickey, John Danks to name a few 20+ WAR guys.

  7. Bonnie and Clyde, does that count?

I’ve been listening to a Podcast about the Manson family and they talk about how this movie and Easy Rider were the beginning of “new” Hollywood.  I’ve seen Easy Rider multiple times, but watched Dunnaway’s Bonnie and Clyde for the first time the other week.

The already have an upgrade over Dozier in Kendrick. They just need to commit to playing him full time. And at what position for the D-Backs? I believe they've been playing Lamb at 3B and Escobar at 2B lately and I think we can all agree that Villar isn't a MLB quality SS. I also don't see the D-Backs being buyers. There's been too much talk of players they're willing to sell like Greinke.

They can’t play Kendrick full time, his legs need rest to stay effective.  Any upgrade by Villar is marginal and they wouldn’t have room on the bench for Dozier — they also wouldn’t cut him.  Their obvious need is their bullpen, that’s where they’ll spend resources.  Not infield.
