This continues to suggest two of our 4-6 prospects is a serious overpay for Dylan Cease.

It’s subjective. In 2023 he wasn’t. Over any longer period, I’d say he was. The Braves trio left out Bregman even though he was much better than Altuve in 2023.
I guess if I was projecting 2024, I'd take Mullins over Santander.

Shouldn't Mullins be considered our third best player?

Ok. Other potential players and how that affects the above. Holliday, Mayo, Ortiz, Kjerstad, Cowser.
Pitching
Bradish
Rodriguez
Means
Kremer
Wells
Irvin
Baumann
Webb
Perez
Tate
Coulombe
Hall
Kimbrel
Others. Baker. Akin. Both can be optioned to Norfolk.
I feel fairly certain McKenna and Hilliard won't both be on the OD roster.

I don't think it's confined to just me. LOL.

The Jays reddit, someone posted they should be renamed the Toronto Blue Balled.
I hope they're wailing and gnashing their teeth in extreme agony.

I always felt he was staying in CA. I think the whole Jays thing was hoping for a panic buy and it seems to have worked.
This. Although I thought Seattle might be a possibility.
He wasn't going to Toronto. LOL.

Got it. You've convinced me. Terrible move. Dodgers are fools and will lose their butts. What were they thinking?
I'm not here to convince you of anything.

I'm sure the Angelos family does.
Also 700 million over 25 years is not the same at 700 million over 10.
There is a reason Lotto gives you a lot less if you want the lump sum.
Actually, I bet ya John Angelos wouldn't mind having that cash right about now.
What you're saying is indisputably true. Everybody knows that.
And we'll have to see the final numbers and it might change the equation moderately, but we're still talking about an unprecedented outlay of money here that is really in another stratosphere than anything that came before it, and is going to require an athletic performance equally in another stratosphere to justify it.
If he performs for the next ten years like he did in 2023 it's justified. If he doesn't, it's going to be hard to.

If you don't like that article, there are others to read. They made a crap ton of money off of Ohtani. Google it, you can read all about it. You don't have to listen to me.
Yeah, they had him on a rookie contract. They made out like bandits.
They weren't paying him 70 million, more like 100 after luxury tax, annually for the performance of his 30s.

According to that CBS article it worked out to $327 MM in 'broad revenue' in 2022 alone. I think they made out like absolute bandits.
That study was highly, highly questionable and that "broad revenue" was not pocketed by the club, far from it.

Congrats. Quick google search on WBC viewership tells a different story than your anecdote.
You think people in China are going to root for a Japanese baseball player because he's Asian? You don't know what you're talking about.
People watched the WBC before Ohtani and they'll watch it after Ohtani.

30MM Japanese televisions tuned in to watch him in WBC. That's just Japan. They are targeting all of Asia. The Dodgers will be, by far, the most popular MLB team in the world. That bodes well for after the contract expires also.
I lived in Asia for almost a decade. Let me tell you something:
Nobody gives a crap about Ohtani just because he's Asian. That's not how it works.

How'd it turn out for the Angles?

No he won't.
Did you not see the part about massive deferments? Future money is less valuable than present money. The real value of the deal is going to be significantly lower than the headline number we are seeing.
We'll have to see much is deferred, but 700 million is 700 million.
Does anybody feel better about the Davis contract because we only paid him 19 million in the first year, and he's receiving deferred payments?
Edit: Don't forget the luxury tax implications. That 700 million is actually going to be a lot more than 700 million. Likely it will be north of a billionn.

When my wife and I went to the Orioles-Angels game in Sept, I would say at least 30% of the crowd there were Asians just there to see Ohtani. So man jerseys of his. Lots and lots of Asian women too, not just men. And the Angels at the time were terrible. Sadly this was the day after he got hurt so he didn't even play.
Considering the last time I went to a Dodgers game it was well over half Hispanic, I am sure the Dodger brass thinks he can more than make up for the contract just by drawing in the Asian crowd. And they are probably right.
Right, but in six years when he's a DH with a 125 OPS+, millions of Asians won't be going to see him, and there will probably be a new Japanese Superstar drawing the crowds.

I don't see Ohtani's career as a pitcher lasting too much longer. He's already on his second serious arm injury and at some point it's going to make sense for Ohtani to be a full time hitter even if he's getting paid to pitch and hit. I see Ohtani's contract as part marketing stunt since Japanese fans will be following what Ohtani does with the Dodgers.
Just by WAR numbers he'd need to average about 9 WAR a year for the next ten years. He had 10 this year in his best season, but can't pitch at least for the next year and is relegated to DH.
The arguments about him opening unique revenue streams still depend on him performing in unique. A 150 OPS+ DH, while great, isn't going to captivate the world.

Well, at least he's not in our division. Significant deferred money. Depending on how much, I might have offered him that contract. Oh well.
You have 700 million dollars? Why are you posting here?

Oh, and PS, F the Blue Jays.

I mean it's the Dodgers, but he's not coming anywhere near justifying that contract.

I believe that Tryptamine in the Just a Rumor thread later clarified that this deal would only become effective when PA died.
So they're going to wait until Angelos dies to actually sign the deal?
Then that isn't really a deal with an option to buy. That's a handshake agreement to make the deal after Peter dies.
If I was Rubenstein, I'd want something in writing that legally enforceable.

That’s how Ted Leonsis acquired the Wizards.
This makes sense. It means Angelos isn't outright lying to the Governor but that the rumours of the sale are still true.

Good prediction, especially considering the much discussed tax savings if the majority sale is after Peter Angelos passes. However, I am not sure how anyone can rely on anything John Angelos says given his recent history of misleading statements.
I suppose they could just write that into the deal: The option to buy comes after the death of Peter.

You know I'm cautious and skeptical of Rubenstein as I've made clear, but John really is insufferable.

Cowser and Ortiz is an overpay, simply because they can't get that equivalent value on the market except for from the Orioles. It is bidding against yourself.
Cowser and Ortiz is 2x, more than, what the Rays got for Glasnow. Is Cease 2x more valuable?
He's not.
