It’s a 60 game season with expanded rosters at the start. Some of these vet pitchers that make the team could be released in September. You aren’t trying to get through a normal season here.

Whenever the cut off date for the extra year of service is, I would hope to see some stopgaps disappear and the upper level prospects appear.

I’m wondering if we could see a different strategy with respect to service time than we usually see.    You’ll have a fair number of players who might have been deemed major league ready by the end of a full season, but they won’t be ready now.     But you could do things like put DL Hall on the 60-man roster and let him pitch 2-3 games towards the end of the season, knowing that in 2021 he’ll be spending at least half the year in the minors so you’re not really messing up his service time.     I think it will be interesting to see if teams do some unconventional things like this, particularly the Orioles, who may as well experiment.

I was just wondering if they might do this.  They have a some upper level guys who need to play like Akin, Mountcastle, Diaz, Zimmerman, etc.

I would rather have a tie than the runner on second rule because I worry that the runner on second rule is something that enough people like that they end up making it a permanent rule.

Manfred has already thrown this out there.  I believe they have tried in the minors.  He wants to speed up the game and feels this is another way to do it.  (When the only true way to speed up the game is lessen the commercials, which of course hurts the bottom line and greed won’t allow that)

I don't see a problem with ties either.  If they are going to do something, I do like that they used the same thing that is used in the WBC.

The only issue I have with the new rules is the extra innings rule. Having a runner on second base to start extras is dumb. Who gets the runs scored? Does the pitcher get an earned run when the runner scores from second even though he didn't allow him there?

Love adding the universal DH an hope that stays, but count me against the extra innings. I'd honestly rather just say you can play up to 12 innings then it's a tie.

I think they count it as an unearned run.  I believe the runner is treated as if he reached on error.

That's an impossible task.  Or nearly.  Look at historical drafts.

In 2014 there were seven college 1B/3B/OFers taken in the first round.

    • Michael Conforto had a 1.000 OPS for Oregon State in '14.  By '16 he was in the majors, by '17 he was a very productive MLB hitter, now has an .800+ OPS with the Mets in 2000+ PAs.
    • Bradley Zimmer had a 1.000 OPS for San Francisco in College.  He's had a few brief trials with the Indians and has a .652 OPS.  Never had more than 16 homers in a minor league season.
    • Derek Fisher didn't even really hit at UVA so not a comp.
    • Mike Papi had a .939 at UVA, over 1.000 the year before.  Never played in the majors, never had a full minor league season with an .800 OPS.
    • Connor Joe had a  1.000 OPS for San Diego State.  Is now 27, 1-for-15 in the majors, and was one of about 1000 people to OPS .900 in the PCL last year.
    • Matt Chapman had a .910 OPS at Cal State Fullerton.  Last year had an .848 OPS and 36 homers for the A's.
    • Casey Gillespie had a 1.200 OPS for Wichita State.  One or two good years in the minors but is now 27 and played last year in indy ball.

So here's my projection for Kjerstad in 2025:

    .230 average +/- .080

    .315 OBP +/- .060

    .420 SLG +/- .100

Some people transition to wood bats better than others.  I think sometimes people (not you specifically) can forget how different it is.

I think the whole goal here is that the SS is more likely than not, the most athletic player on the team.  Therefore, could easily transition to other positions (Adam Jones) if they show they can hit.  So, draft as many SS as possible and move them into positions to succeed at the major league level.

    That was Weaver’s philosophy.

I wasn't talking about W/L record.  I just don't want to constantly see the same teams.

It’s super boring in a normal season.  I get to see the Blue Jays 20 times and Mike Trout three.  Six if I only sleep for four hours the other nights.

I just learned Blefary's Age 21 Rookie of the Year season was only a half-win shy of Age 21 Cal Ripken's.

He was before my time and digesting Orioles history as a kid I think I kind of knew the trivia he was a RoY, but didn't realize how wOBA powerful a young hitter he was.

He did seem to have old man's skills even as a pup.

Yep, he was really good as an Oriole.

If the O's play 50-70 games this year.

Don't answer too quickly.  There is some competition here.   While the O's offense has been impacted by the loss of two of its best offensive players - Villar and  Mancini.   And the pitching was the worst in the majors last season.   This team is not positioned to win anything  but maybe a high draft choice.

We can recite the expected position starter of Davis at 1B,  Alberto at 2B,  Iglesias at SS, Ruiz at 3B, Severino at C, Nunez at DH, Hayes in CF and Santander in RF,   but  there is competition at LF.

    1) Mountcastle is the name many will jump to but wait.   He may have to earn it in ST 2.0.    Some of the others may hit as well as he does and his defense is in question.   Does any runner stop at 3B with him in left?  Then there is the - Do the O's start his clock thing that I throw in just for Corn.

    2) DJ Stewart.  While Mountcastle had a 871 OPS at AAA last season Stewart OPS was 944 for the same team.   And if the O's need someone to get on base Stewart had a 396 OBP at Norfolk compared to Mountcastle 344 OBP.  Stewart also hit homers at a better pace this Mountcastle at AAA in 2019.  His range is left is probably as good as Mountcastle and his arm is better.

    3) Mason Williams is probably the best defensive left fielder in the competition.  And he had a 848 OPS plus a 371 OBP at AAA which could make him the leadoff hitter.

    4.  Dwight Smith Jr - Yep, he is still with the club and has more MLB experience than any of the other three.    Don't count him out yet.

So  there could be some competition for left field in ST 2.O.

Who do you see surging to win the spot?

I would put Santander in left and Diaz in right.  Mountcastle at first.
