Frobby summed up my confusion with your statement well. I'm well aware of how Mateo is a gold glove-caliber SS, and an awful hitter. I don't see any similarities to Tyler Nevin, aside from I'm guessing you're hoping that Nevin maximizes one of his skills in order to stay on the roster? I personally think Nevin is AAAA filler at the moment and we have options in the minors who are superior as bench players.

Mateo is worth hanging on to in case he ever figures out how to approach a .700 OPS in the next year or so. But he's best utilized as a pinch-runner and late inning defensive replacement off the bench on a winning team. I'd rather see Westburg play SS right now to lengthen our lineup and give Westburg major league reps which will help him and the team when the team is closer to competing.

Not really comparing Nevin & Mateo? You lost me there. I just said I think ultimately both could be successful (like Mateo much more and have since the day they claimed him).

Nevin def is likely to get DFA-Ed barring some huge offensive explosion.

I get the excitement on Westburg & Henderson but let’s give them a little time in AAA first. I personally would play Guterriez at 3b, Mateo at SS and Urias at 2b until those two are ready, been saying that all season.

They had the largest pool in 2020 and still felt a need to go under slot at #2.

🤣🤪🤣🤪🎯🎯🎯Yep. Arguing with some posters on this board is maddening. When you read national draft coverage on us you realize how much kool aid/tunnel vision people experience on here. Most descriptions of our draft coverage as : unpredictable, bizarre, strange and thrifty. I saw or heard one call Elias’ war room like the Viet Kong’s lol. Sometime I feel nuts when I come here and then you realize your not nuts, most just want to argue endlessly.

Kinda interesting. One opinion of interest is that because the O's have the largest bonus pool, they may not even need to go under slot at #1.

It's been mentioned other places, but if this isn't a draft with a ton of depth that's another reason to no go under slot at #1. Then there's the opportunity to select under slots for several rounds as a way to save money.

It really seems to me like it's a three horse race between Jones, Holliday and Green.

I’d be very happy with Jones of course but also Holliday, Lee or Parada. Green could be a superstar or bust, not sure I like that for us. Berry, Cross seem like bad picks. Collier need more info but excited about age but I’d likely pass. As I said in another thread, I’d consider going Dylan Lesko underslot. I think that would be a very savvy move then just go huge overslot the rest of the draft.

Oh yeah?  I gave their draft a D on draft day last year.   I like it a bit better now.

The difference between you and me is you are very confident in your opinions about the draft candidates.   I don’t really have strong opinions.   I don’t watch film on these guys, and I wouldn’t know what to look for if I did.   I’m a lawyer, not a baseball scout

Waiting so late to draft pitchers was head scratching indeed. Holiday & Lee make sense to me. I think it’s one of those two if not Jones, hopefully. Cross is another name that keeps popping up, ugh.

Hard disagree. If anything we have been conditioned to keep players past their prime and/or beyond their peak value. We got nothing for Manny and Jones, and spent a ton of money to keep the wrong guys, that's how we got in this mess.

Of course that was terrible mismanagement, no doubt. But Mullins/Hays/a decent closet are equal to Jones or Manny.

He’s not slugged over .400 outside A ball, unless you count 106 ABs this year. There’s no indicator that he will be even a mediocre ML hitter.

That said, I’d keep him over Arauz. He looks awful at the plate. At least Nevin can work the count. He just can’t do anything with a hittable pitch.

You could be right, need more info. But I did see in his development, he’s been yanked all over the place. He could use a good full season in the minors. The rule 5 is awful for these player’s development. I’d get rid of it personally.

But if you looked at the odds 2 weeks before the draft like we are, the odds favorite would not be the player actually picked.

I wanted Jabari all throughout the draft process but I would also be okay with Banchero. Having a big that can shoot is always important and has amazing footwork. I've read amazing things about him so I guess he has a good chance to be a special player.

Ok, yes, I misspoke, he was never the favorite just a huge sudden rise. I am def a big Banchero fan, touching story with his mom!

Well, not literally the best, but one of the best this year.   But that’s kind of irrelevant to the point here, which is about whether Nevin can learn to hit.  Frankly, whether Mateo has learned to hit has little to do with Nevin.

As I see things, Mateo is exceeding expectations with the glove and underperforming expectations with the bat.  rWAR has him at 1.5, which is a slightly better than average starter overall.  fWAR has him at 0.7, which is below average for a starter.   Where’s the truth?   I’d say it’s in between.   He’s a decent starter thanks to his defense, but he really needs to find a way to hit a bit more to keep his job long term.

Nevin is a well below average defensive 3B and he’s not a good enough hitter to be useful long term.  He’s just plugging a spot until Urias is healthy.  I understand Urias has begun a rehab assignment in Bowie, so I’m guessing Nevin will be gone soon.

Agree on Nevin, his time is nearing an end with us but my larger point with him is this: I predict he goes somewhere else and becomes much better than we are currently. He is a guy that just needs a bit longer to adjust to the new level, he’s been successful at every level.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the Nats.  I know everyone is saying the middle to bottom of 1st round, but I think a team is going to take a chance when they see his arm is back.

No way Nats take him at 5. With the Orioles, someone great will fall and Rizzo will capitalize.

The hype about Johnson being the “best HS hitter in 10 years” is such a bunch of noise. That body type scares me. Six years from now, “he could be Wade Boggs”…ehhh, no thanks. Not at 1-1. He could also end up comping to Lenny Harris, a small barrel chested guy with below average defense, speed and arm. At best, he could be Joe Morgan at the plate, with no stolen bases and below average defense. I’m sorry, that’s just not good enough, nor likely enough, for me. I value the defensive side far too much to sell out on the bat.

Such a 🎯 take. Nailed it. Agree completely. If this is the O’s pick, fail.

You're not saying what will happen? That Nevin will learn how to hit? Because Mateo hasn't learned how to hit - he's one of the worst hitting regulars in baseball.

And literally the best defensively. Not saying he will hit, but huge Mateo fan. If you know the future, please fill me in.

I'm a Magic and Banchero was never the odds favorite, he was actually 3rd until a couple of hours of the draft.

The Magic kept secret the 1st pick like no other team has done in the last few years. So the Magic are actually the outlier here, if you followed the odds from the start Jabari Smith was the favorite until draft day.

Correct except Banchero launched up the odds late one night and made headlines bc of the strange move. That’s what you gotta look for, a leak. How do you feel about Banchero vs Smith out of curiosity. I absolutely love him and his story, big Banchero fan!

Gutierrez is fun to watch at third base. It's getting late though for him to learn how to hit major league pitching: he's just two months away from turning 28.

Hard to argue with that but I am a believer:) Not saying it will happen but like Matteo, it can.

How can you say long overdue, and then immediately after I would put no timetable on him? Lol

He’s batting .450 with .1100 ops. That’s why. You said 3 weeks. No way I promote him to Bowie just because it’s 3 weeks, that’s insanity.
