I don't believe that Elias doesn't know who he will pick #1 until the day of the draft.  I do agree he's not telling anyone.  It sounds likely that everyone on the O's draft board for at least the first few rounds has been scouted and analyzed from multiple viewpoints.  It doesn't sound like there are any prospects who are a scouts' guy who basically make a one man choice that I believe happened under previous Orioles regimes.

He knows. Of course he does.

Honestly I have no idea.  My gut tells me it will be Jones, Holliday or Johnson.  I think this isn’t the year to go with a college guy.   We already have 16 of our 17 top prospects at Bowie or higher, so no need for a guy who can be in the majors in 2024.   They can afford to be patient.   We know Johnson had a workout at OPACY and that the O’s visited Holliday, so it seems they’re both in the running.  You have to assume Jones is on the list.   But really it’s anyone’s guess.

I have no idea why Johnson would be in serious consideration so that’s probably the guy lol.

He is not in the lineup today for Delmarva.  I have to believe this is a "packing" day for him.

Sign me up for your plan, Tony.  I don't think it's likely to play out for quite 100 AA PAs (probably >3 weeks at Aberdeen), but that would be great.

Nice! Long overdue. I would put no timetable on him. None. Let the kid play. It’s just Delmarva clearly is not helping his development at this point. Let’s take it one step at a time.

Nunez and Nevin are both 3rd basemen, but like Nevin, Nunez had also played 1st base and some OF as well.

Orioles let go of Nunez after he had crushed 50 homers in 935 at-bats with the O's in his age 24-26 seasons, which included being second behind Mancini in 2019 and leading the team in 2020. Nevin is 25 and has not shown anything close to Nunez's bat--the comparison is even more stark if you look at their minor league stats. Moreover, Nevin is by no means a defensive whiz--the O's have several players (Urias, Martin, Mateo et al that are more likely to pan out as utility players). Barring a post-ASB break-out, I don't see how the Orioles could feel warranted in seeing him in their long-range plans, especially with all the infield talent beginning to bubble up from the farm.

I completely agree with you on Nevin here, his time is likely running out. I just think he is a guy that may take longer with adjustments and may need a set position to feel comfortable. I think he will be more successful than here. The potential is there. I also think Guterriez deserves a longer look at 3b but clearly I am in the minority there.

  5. Who do you think they take Frobby? I am highly doubtful it will be Jones. I think Holiday/Lee/Parada are best options after Jones. Green would be with a bit too much risk for my liking but would appreciate the thinking if they think they can fix his holes. Collier, given his age, seems intriguing but not sure at 1:1.
If Elias does, what I am sure he will do, it won’t be Jones, I’d rather him trade someone for another comp balance pick and far exceed to draft slots and pay the penalty. Os have had a putrid payroll and can certainty afford the penalty but highly unlikely that will happen either. I don’t think most understand you CAN spend over the slots. Over 5% more comes with penalty but I bet the Mets go hog wild this year with overslot/pay penalty and it’s something we should do. In that scenario, or any really, you should take BPA. But hey, it’s Elias, so highly unlikely it happens and everyone will normalize the misguided aporoach. You don’t need to “save” anything if you just pay a penalty, so this whole absurd conversation about under/over slot is nonsense. Os have had a bottom payroll tier payroll forever, spend the money. Take BPA.

I don’t think Berry is in the equation at all.   Not worried about that.  I don’t think Boras has much to do with it.  The O’s will have a good idea of what it costs to sign Jones, and the other candidates.   If the O’s like Jones best by a clear margin, they’ll pick him.  If it’s muddy, financial considerations could be a factor.

My impression of Elias’ process is that he doesn’t decide until the last minute and he sets up a healthy debate among the various scouts and analysts.  He’s got his number crunchers, his eyes on the ground, his financial gurus, etc.   He’s got a model for weighing it all, but at the end of the day, it’s his call.   And he doesn’t make the call until hearing everyone out, and he doesn’t hear everyone out until right before the draft.

Berry was linked to Os earlier on, then it was Collier then Johnson.

I like the healthy debate of ideas approach but most of the board is likely more supportive of a dictator approach I bet:)  Not sure I buy that is his approach honestly.

Where are you getting this info from specifically? Do you have personal knowledge? Please explain how you know his intimate approach in selecting a candidate?

That is what I thought to begin the season but then he went of that streak.

No matter whether he is a closer or just a reliever he worth keeping.  I would not trade him.

Orioles org has been such a dysfunctional mess. Fans have been conditioned to trade anyone that has value for fear they may underperform. Likely not how you turn a perennial loser to a winner.

He's not nearly as good as Renato Nunez, who basically crashed and burned after leaving the O's.

Nunez was a pretty successful hitter at the ML level with impressive power unlike Nevin at this point. Also, without looking up fielding stats, Nevin a bit better defensively and can play more positions. Not sure how those two are related.

I know it’s cool to crap all over players when they are failing but not sure Nevin can’t still be a successful major league player in the right situation.

Touki Toussaint has been DFA’d by the Braves.  26 years old.

This is a no brained BUT with the braves org, always a major injury is imminent so my guess that shoulder injury he had last year could be more. If he gets to us, worth more than st least 5/40 on the roster, particularly if he has to go to 60 day DL.

I’m at a point of saying why not put Gunner at 3rd now. There is a lack of prospects there. I think that’s why the obsession on Nevin.

I think Nevin is running out of time here but to be clear, I think in another org with slightly more time he could be a good asset. A change of scenery could help him. Doubt you get much in a trade but would help him, Angels?

Lopez was a great story for the first couple of months, but he's blown two saves in a row, his pitches don't seem to be having the same bite on them they had earlier in the season, and we've lost 2 games in a row that we should have won.  I hope he's not hurting his trade value too much.

It’s 2 games. Twins def have his number. Did you not think he would ever face adversity?

Who do you put your faith in on these evaluations?      Please don't say SportsGuy.

We agreed last year it seems. Completely but I look at composite lists. I think that’s all you can can do unless you are confident in your scouting abilities. I would love to see most accurate scouting source, does that exist?

You're not making sense.   Keith Law has Johnson ranked #3 overall.   Kiley McDaniel has him ranked #2 overall.     You say he's not a first round talent?   Based on what?

I love Keith Law personally. Frankly, I respect the hell out of him. But I realize his accuracy isn’t the best. I am sure he’s a first round talent, not 1:1 bc of position & tool set.

Yarbrough looks a lot like a non-tender candidate from here.   He's maybe a decent example of a Rays assembly line player who is good enough through Arb2.    He's already been left off a playoff roster and relegated to Up/Down status this year despite decent career accomplishments.

Yes he would improve the floor for the 2023 Orioles pitching 1425 innings but believe he'll be available to that for just $$$, and its such a low bar to clear.

Snell...I kind of feel like it being 1.3 years not 2.3 years is a feature not a bug for keeping it short-term with pitchers.   If Orioles $$$ could help the Padres with their cap and get him on to our staff with that not talent, it'd be wonderful.

Love the commentary, this is the kinda stuff we should be doing, good sign. Execution is key

  15. No. No way in heck. Johnson is not a first round talent/not a premium position. All this board talks is savings like they are clipping coupons. Take the BPA and likely that is one of Jones, Holiday, Lee, Green or even Parada. Teams can go over their pool and people act like you can’t do that. We have cut the payroll the past 5 years to putrid levels, why not take those savings and go overslot in all rounds & pay the penalty over 5%? Because Orioles are cheap and embarrassing but it could be done.

All this nonsense on going underslot is a fabricated storyline like it’s a hard cap, it’s not.

So please spare me why we should take a 2nd in the first. Complete and utter nonsense, and why our org never gets better, fans don’t demand better, just complacency.
