Stewart Homers and Baysox Bounce Back

Two-Run, First Inning Home Run Sparks Baysox in 7-2 Win

By Adam Pohl

DJ Stewart homered and David Hess picked up his league leading sixth win of the season as the Baysox upended Akron 7-2 Saturday Night.

After a 10-0 defeat a night ago, Stewart got the Baysox started on the right foot this evening. He lifted a two-run home run off of the batters eye in center field to give the Baysox a 2-0 first inning advantage. The drive was his eighth home run of the season.

Baysox starting pitcher David Hess then went to work in a night where he battled. After the first four batters reached base bringing in a run, Hess went to work. He struck out consecutive batters and then got a groundout to preserve a 2-1 lead.

The Baysox got two runs in the fourth inning and then blew the game open with a two-out rally in the fifth frame. With Jay Gonzalez at third base and two down, Garabez Rosa lined a first pitch fastball for an RBI-single to center. Austin Wynns then lined a sharp double into the corner in left field to score Rosa from first. And Aderlin Roderiguez singled Wynns home with a line drive single up the middle. The Bowie lead was 7-1.

Time Berry took over for Hess in the sixth inning and worked three innings allowing a run on four hits. Ryan Meisinger worked through a one-out double in a scoreless ninth inning.

Hess becomes the first Eastern League pitcher to six wins with the victory. He has eclipsed his 2016 win total with Bowie. Gonzalez reached base four times in the game with three hits and a walk. Wynns drove home two runs in the contest. The Baysox are now back above .500 (25-24) and have risen to second place in the Western Division.

KEYS PITCHERS COMBINE TO TWO-HIT ASTROS

BULLPEN FIRES FIVE HITLESS FRAMES

by Kyle Huson

Three Frederick Keys (24-24) pitchers combined to allow just two Buies Creek Astros (28-22) hits in a 6-0 win on Saturday night at Nymeo Field.Luis Gonzalez and Tanner Chleborad pitched five hitless innings of relief, and allowed just one baserunner.

Keys starter Ofelky Peralta struggled early, walking the first two batters he faced on eight straight pitches. He got out of trouble in the inning, retiring the next three batters. The right-hander faced trouble again in the second inning with runners at first and third with one out. He escaped unharmed, getting Anibal Sierra to ground into a double play.

Austin Hays broke the scoreless tie in the third by launching a two-run home run to left field off of Astros starter Framber Valdez. It was Hays’ second home run in as many days, and his fifth in his last four games.

In the fourth inning, Peralta worked around a jam again. After a leadoff walk, he got two outs on a strike him out, throw him out double play. With two outs, the Keys righty walked the next two men he faced moving his game total to a career-high seven. He escaped the inning unscathed when Sierra flied out to center field, keeping the Keys lead at 2-0.

The Keys added four more runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs. Ryan Mountcastle got things going with a swinging bunt toward third. Yermin Mercedes then hit a double that rolled into the left field corner, scoring Mountcastle all the way from first. After a Shane Hoelscher walk, Ademar Rifaela hit a single to left scoring Mercedes. Alex Murphy knocked in two more with a base hit to right field, pushing the lead to 6-0 and ending the scoring for both sides. Valdez (0-3) took the loss for the Astros, allowing six runs in 4.2 innings.

After lasting just four innings, Peralta gave way to his bullpen. Earning the win, Gonzalez (1-0) pitched three perfect innings, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced on just 37 pitches. Chleborad followed suit with two hitless innings, and allowing just one baserunner while striking out a pair. The Astros were held hitless after Randy Cesar hit a two-out single in the third.

SHOREBIRDS POUND 13 HITS, CRUISE PAST BLUECLAWS
Ring, Palmeiro, Clare notch three-hit games in 7-1 Delmarva win

by Will DeBoer

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Delmarva Shorebirds scored the first seven runs of the game, including a four-run sixth, rolling over the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park. Delmarva has now won three out of four.

Lucas Humpal (2-4) earned the win for the Shorebirds (19-28) in his best start of the season, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out five on 91 pitches, going seven innings for the second straight outing. Humpal now leads the South Atlantic League with 58.1 innings pitched.

Felix Paulino (1-4) took the loss for the BlueClaws (28-21) after giving up four runs on nine hits in a season-high 5.1 innings.

Delmarva wasted no time getting going as Cole Billingsley led off the game with a single, eventually swiping second for his 11th steal of the year. With two outs, Preston Palmeiro chopped a sharp grounder over the bag at first and into right field, scoring Billingsley on a double to make it 1-0.

Palmeiro put together an encore performance in the top of the third. After Jake Ring’s two-out base hit, Palmeiro lifted an opposite-field fly to deep left that one-hopped to the wall. Ring had a head start and scored from first on another double, putting Delmarva up 2-0.

The Shorebirds broke it open in the sixth inning. With one out, Chris Clare singled to center, his third hit of the game. Frank Crinella followed with a slow bouncing grounder down the third base line for an infield hit, and a speedy Clare advanced all the way to third on the throw to first. That chased Paulino from the game.

The BlueClaws summoned Ismael Cabrera from the bullpen, and Daniel Fajardo greeted him with a bloop double to right, scoring Clare and putting Crinella at third. Alejandro Juvier then cranked a line drive down the right field line and into the picnic grass over the fence. Juvier’s second home run of the year was the Shorebirds’ first three-run shot all season, putting the visitors up 6-0.

Delmarva added one more in the top of the seventh. Ring and Palmeiro led off with back-to-back singles to put men on the corners, and Gerrion Grim hit a fly ball to the warning track that scored Ring with ease.

Lakewood broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh as Darick Hall led off with a line drive home run down the right field line. The BlueClaws had a handful of late chances, putting two on with two out in the eighth and ninth, but Matt Trowbridge got out of trouble both times, finishing off two scoreless out of the bullpen to seal the deal for Delmarva.

Ring, Palmeiro, and Clare each had three of the Shorebirds’ 13 hits, one shy of a season-high. Ring finished 3-for-5 with his league-leading 16th double and two runs. Palmeiro went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two driven in. Clare finished 3-for-4 with a run.

Cord Sandberg had the BlueClaws’ only multi-hit game of the afternoon, going 2-for-4.

Delmarva cracked seven runs in the game for the first time since plating 10 on May 3 in Columbia. It was the Shorebirds’ largest win since that 10-3 decision as well; Delmarva had won its last five games by a total of six runs.
