On the morning of Sep 7, 2017, the Orioles were 71-68. They went on to finish the season 4-19.

On the morning of Aug 24, 2002, the Orioles were 63-63 and went on to finish the season 4-32. 

Yes, 4-19 is not as bad as 4-32, but the 2002 team didn't have nearly as much talent as the 2017 one.

Also, 4-32 came in much cheaper: $60,493,487 in 2002 vs. $163,676,616 in 2017 (opening day payroll, source: http://www.stevetheump.com/Payrolls.htm
