  1. Keith Moreland had some good years with the Cubbies before coming to Baltimore at age 35 in 1989. In 33 games for the O's, in what would be his last year, he "slashed" .215/.243/.280/.524
  2. While I think those things are possible I think there's obviously still a lot we don't know about the virus. From what I've read it's still possible that containment will mitigate the impact. From what I've read we don't know if new cases will be reduced as we head into spring. This thread started by asking the question will "Could the Major League Season be cancelled or postponed." I think it's definitely possible. In discussing this topic I think we have to be careful of straying too far into economics and government response, etc. because it starts to turn the thread political and that never works out. Plus, there are plenty of other places we can do that.
  3. So far there have been 822 documented cases of the coronavirus in the United States causing 28 deaths. That's a 3.4% mortality rate. Since the flu and the coronavirus seem to be transmitted in much the same ways, I think it's prudent to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
  4. At a 0.1% mortality rate the flu causes between 290,000 and 650,000 deaths world-wide each year. At a 3.5% rate the Coronavirus will cause the deaths of tens of millions more if it spreads as ubiquitously as the flu. While it is accurate to say the flu has killed more people this year its demonstrably false to say the flu is more deadly. For comparison sake, so far this year there have been nearly 30 million cases of the flu in the US causing approximately 17,000 deaths. At the present mortality rate, if the coronavirus were to infect 30 million Americans the death toll would be around 1,050,000. This is why countries like Italy and others are shutting their borders, cancelling school, banning large sporting evens and gatherings and otherwise taking extraordinary measures to try and contain the spread of the virus. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/as-coronavirus-spreads-many-questions-and-some-answers-2020022719004
  5. The mortality rate for the flu is 0.1% while the mortality rate for the Coronavirus is around 3.5%.
  6. Plenty of people get it. Under the circumstances its just not funny.
  7. Sorry, but a 31 year old pitcher (Wojo) with 47 total games and a 5.76 career ERA does not a stable starter make.
  8. First time I've seen this mentioned. "The former All-Star and two-time home run champion's stock had fallen so far in recent years he considered retirement this winter, with three years and around $93 million left on his contract." https://www.mlb.com/orioles/news/orioles-players-impressing-the-most-this-spring
  9. There are a lot of unknowns out there right now. The mortality rate for coronavirus appears to be between 2.0 - 2.5% - which is relatively low - but still 20 times greater than influenza (0.1%) which, as others have pointed out, has already been responsible for 18,000 deaths this year. 18,000 X 20 = 360,000 which is obviously certainly something to be concerned about. Hopefully the coronavirus turns out to be seasonal which will give the medical community more time to come up with a vaccine and to learn more about the virus... and also preserve the baseball season.
  10. I don't think they'd have to ban attendance for Orioles games. The virus will only impact sporting events that draw large crowds. (Sorry, gallows humor).
  11. Yeah, his MiL numbers are intriguing... and it looks like he had a short, but productive, spring in the MLB camp.
  12. Trade him? We should be trying to extend him. ??
  13. I have analyzed the spring training photos of Crush and I can definitely state using my advanced system of "photo metrics" that he has "only" put on 13.639 lbs. of muscle over the off season. You're welcome.
  14. I always liked Jeff Conine. He was solid and dependable - especially in 2001. Even at 40 years of age he put up respectable numbers for us. .265/.320/.726
  15. He was always fun to watch. Who hits 23 triples in a season - as he did in 2007? The last guy to do it was Dale Mitchell back in 1949. Lou Brock never did it. Pete Rose never did it. Nor did Willie Mays or Joe Dimaggio. Ty Cobb hit 23 or more 3 times - but he did it back in the dead ball era. He will be missed.
  16. A utility infielder who has now been DFA'd.
  17. Eight pages on Cedric Mullins is a clear indicator that Spring Training can't get here quickly enough!
  18. Hey... wait a minute. I think you could be on to something here. We should get the boys in the lab on this right away!
  19. Who's going to turn down a junior mint? It's chocolate. It's peppermint. It's delicious!
  20. I've always been a Mancini fan - but for the right package I'd trade him. If the Rangers are in "win now" mode then we might be able to get a decent haul. Hans Crouse, Cole Winn and Nick Solak look interesting. Not suggesting they would trade all three but some combination that includes one or two of them might work.
  21. Something tells me we're not going to see Maverick Hikers "20 better list" anytime soon.
  22. You may think that the money is "nothing" but, as others have pointed out, it is the maximum allowable and is unprecedented.
  23. You don't want to trifle with a man named after a Civil War Battle and a Mountain.
