  1. I won't be surprised if next year's offseason will end up like the disaster that this offseason was, even though it shouldn't be.
  2. There was that article from a couple months back about how Burnes was a little hurt during the arbitration process. Looks like he's not ****ing around now.
  3. I'm 50/50 on it. If they were to sign him for a massive haul, do Adley, G-Rod and Gunnar sign contracts for 10/130-150 and are like "Hell yeah, let's play with this guy for the next 10 years and win games" or are they more inclined to be like "well, you backed up the truck for him, what are you gonna do for me?" Hard to say.
  4. Oh FFS. C'mon, SG clearly laid out the fantasyland procedures for this in the OP to suspend reality and pretend like it would.
  5. That's a fair response, but my response to your response was that 1916 was deadball which was a decidedly different game. And let's not forget while the competition was very good at that time, it wasn't as good as it could have been. Ohtani might not have been the league's best pitcher, however his ERA+ last year was higher than Ruth's 1916 season with a FIP that's practically identical...granted, less innings but in an era where athletes aren't smoking cigarettes between innings and are training year round.
  6. Agreed on all points. I think a more interesting hypothetical would be...if we're in the playoff hunt this year and the Angels are known to be listening to offers on Ohtani for a trade...who do we trade from our system and are we only trading if we have a 48 hour window to sign him to a long term deal? Or does anyone want to trade a good chunk of our carefully stockpiled system without a long term deal done and run the risk of trying to sign him in free agency? In that scenario, I'd only trade for him if we could hammer out a long term deal before pulling the trigger on that trade. It'd be tempting to trade for him no matter what but all the Old Bay in the world probably isn't enough to entice him to come back after his time here as a rental is over. And if that costs us guys like Westburg, Ortiz, Mayo, Norby, Kjerstad, Povich, etc, count me out.
  7. Sure he is. He might not be the most decorated player of all time...he might not be the most accomplished player of all time, those are different arguments. He might retire while not holding any significant records. Is he the greatest talent to ever put on an MLB uniform? Undoubtedly, 100% yes. No one else has thrown 100 mph fastballs and hit 400 foot homers with regularity. And he runs like a gazelle to boot. On the WBC broadcast last night, they explained that Babe Ruth's two way career really only lasted two years. Ohtani is past that.
  8. Fair enough. And I wasn't making that argument, SG was. I really don't care if there's much of an economic impact if he were to sign here. Certainly the Orioles would become more followed by people in Japan, but what does that mean for revenue and how's it measured? I believe a lot of people here would pretend to know but it's hard to say. It would make the Orioles brand a bit more global but again, that's hard to measure. Is he worth it? Probably. If Ohtani really did sign with the Angels due to the proximity of being closer to Japan, then he's most likely interested in West Coast based teams. And he wants to win, that narrows it down to probably the Dodgers, Padres and Giants, maybe the Mariners.
  9. No, but I think SG's point was that Asian people of various cultures (aka, not Japanese) are more inclined to support HIM and root for him....and it might bring more of them to Wal-Mart Field at Camden Yards.
  10. Doesn't care about "Asian" culture, yet gave up a ton of money to play on the west coast because of the commute to Japan.
  11. You're essentially getting two top flight players for that money. 10 years/250 for a great pitcher and 10/250 for a great hitter. At that rate, it's kind of a bargain. Of course I'd be worried about injuries, but to SG's point I think he takes fantastic care of himself. And even if he can't pitch, he can still probably be an effective hitter. He'd probably be the guy to take aim at the warehouse and hit it. I don't know if he hits free agency but I wouldn't be upset at the Orioles for spending 10/500 on him. I think it's more likely that a team trades 5-7 of their top 10 list for him if they're in a playoff hunt, knowing they're going to have to spend 10/500 to keep him and not make that trade look terrible for a 3 month rental. If he hits free agency, I hope the Orioles make a run at him. It would be quite a coup.
  12. I like winning, but fan favorites are annoying. "Fan favorite" is code for someone who isn't that good but they sign a lot of autographs and they hustle a lot. I'm being sarcastic. Fan favorites are fine.
  13. Fan favorites are terrible, aren't they? I can't stand them, personally. Underperforming, low WARs, but sparkling personalities that make the fans who cling to 80s stats think these guys are something special. To hell with them, I say.
  14. Hopefully the efficiency is something that can continue throughout the season.
  15. Anything less than a record setting number for a catcher is a disappointment.
  16. SPRING TRAINING STATS!!!!!!!!11
  17. Granted, I think that the OD starter nomination is a bit overblown and overhyped but I'd like to see a guy who was here last year get it instead of some newcomer. Yes, I'm aware Sutcliffe had the Opening Day '92 shutout against Cleveland but he's had a bit better of a career than Gibson.
  18. Wow those numbers against lefties are not good.
  19. Not really. I mean, he's not a rotation contender so the bullpen is the obvious landing spot for him.
  20. I like Bautista but I don’t think he was exactly automatic last year. And based on nothing else other than my gut feeling, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a big regression this year. That said, I’d have to be blown away for a trade. I’m not saying I’d definitely trade him but if the Mets called I’d listen.
  21. Blues Traveler is good. I like the Save His Soul album. Anyway, I'm hoping for no more injuries in the WBC. Someone let me know if Team USA makes the finals.
  22. Phish is fine. It's low on the stuff I like to listen to but every once in awhile I do listen to them. I've got no interest in going to a show of theirs though. We would feel different if it was Adley or Gunnar but if they feel the need to represent their country, I'm not going to say they shouldn't. Diaz and all the rest of these guys know there's a risk to getting hurt like this but they do it anyway. The teams know there's a risk, too. So all the cards are on the table, everyone knows what's at stake.
  23. I don't want to know why you were jumping up and down. I'm assuming it was at a Phish concert or something. Gross. There's no good time for an injury. Like I said, I think Diaz was going to hurt that knee regardless. Cohen's tweet was brief: Not a lot to glean from that, although you're probably correct in that what he's saying behind closed doors is different than what he's tweeting. I'm inclined to agree that their FO is pissed but what are they gonna do?
