  1. It makes sense, I mean SI had a cool thing happen to them where they predicted the Astros to in the WS in three or four years and it happened. So I'm assuming that's part of the reason they're producing this. It's a fluff piece to be sure, so I'm not mad at it. That said, I'm not sure what some of you guys really want out of big national publications...they paint with broad strokes and simply don't have the time and wherewithal to dig down deep and look at a team the way we get to. Everyone knows Adley Rutschman but past that, would we expect anyone at SI who's a baseball generalist to know Mountcastle? Hays? Baumann? Lowther? We talk about these guys daily but no one else knows who they are. So I'm not surprised that no one's taking us seriously because no one at a big nationwide publication that's a baseball generalist knows this stuff. I can't really blame them, either.
  2. Happy 2020 to everyone. This is truly a great place. Ken and I are taking a 2 hour lunch tomorrow, @TonySoprano, would love if you could make it. Bring a booster chair for Ken if you can.
  3. I think we're all pretty bored around here and there's not much to chew on. If you've been on this site for a significant amount of time, you've probably had some interaction with other posters about players who've suited up for the Orioles that were bad but you loved them anyway. Loveable guys that just weren't great ballplayers but there was something about them that made you like them. So the challenge here is to construct a roster (or at least a starting lineup, spend as much time on this as you want) of former bad Orioles. And if you want, a little blurb about them and why they're on your squad. Since we're here with @DrungoHazewood, all Orioles teams are up for consideration from the early versions of the team to everything after 1954. The only rule is that your team can only have ONE player that made an all-star team and no gold glovers. I don't want any dolts picking Belanger simply because he couldn't hit. In regards to the one all-star team rule, I'm specifically thinking of Ty Wigginton. So have at it, craft a 25 man team or simply go 1-9. EDIT: Also, no players from other teams that were once great but finished out their career here. Like no Dwight Evans. Or no players that sucked here that went on to find greatness elsewhere like Jose Bautista.
  4. If that's what you're referring to...that's very different than your impassioned plea to bring Caleb Joseph home. In fairness, who our backup catcher is this year isn't really a big deal. I suppose it would be nice to see if Sisco could step up and deliver but I don't think anyone is getting their hopes up. The backup catcher on the 2020 Orioles isn't a point of consequence. And I liked Caleb Joseph, he's one of my favorite bad Orioles of all time. In fact, he'd probably be my starting catcher on my bad Orioles team. But I don't feel the need for him to come home to have one more season in the sun at Camden Yards. Which is why it's strange.
  5. One of wildcard's stranger threads and that's saying something.
  6. I understand taking a shot on a guy like this but I think we all know how this most likely ends up.
  7. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28358742/mlb-all-decade-team-made-our-squad-baseball-best-2010-2019 @Frobby
  8. That was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen, it was hilarious. Pretty sure you could hear how flummoxed the guy who asked the question was in the background ? I agree with brother @Frobby, watching Bedard when he was on was a thing of beauty. That curve was one of the nastiest. Seemed like he could drop it on the back foot of a right handed batter at will.
  9. Can't get any worse. Glad to see the dude is willing to try new things.
  10. Roch looks like he has the same vitamin plan that Hulk Hogan used in the 80s.
  11. I like how you emphasized the Royals there, like they're somehow worse than us.
  12. Yes, because neither of them can be as terrible as Chris Davis is and cost as much.
  13. You'll never see a play like The Fake again. Had never seen a play like it before, haven't seen it since. The home run robberies are all great but you'll see more of them over the years to varying degrees and while they're impressive feats of athleticism they don't have the cerebral quality that The Fake had.
  14. What, no pressure, no diamonds didn't fire you up?
  15. Seeing a thread like this get bumped at this time of the year makes me nervous. Like he's going to need TJ surgery after an offseason throwing session or something. Glad to see the positive comments. If Gray Rod and Hall can deliver we'll have a nice 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.
  16. Orioles Reliables, who played 150+ games in a season since 1980. https://www.sporcle.com/games/starcivicrats/mlb-orioles-reliables I got an 87% on this one. Some of those names I wish weren't so reliable.
  17. I got Williams off the bat, but I agree that missing that amount of time is impressive, yet still leading. 80s was kind of a surprise for me when I guessed it right but that wasn't my first guess, admittedly (Schmidt). But after thinking about it, that player made total sense.
  18. We had a sporcle thread on here a few years ago, this is a great way to kill some time during the offseason. Credit to @Frobby for bringing it up in the WAR thread in the MLB section earlier this morning. I just got 76 on this one, name every Oriole to hit 25+ homers in a season. https://www.sporcle.com/games/jgrub7/orioles-franchise-25-hrs-single-season It goes back to the Browns days, though. I'm embarrassed by some of the obvious ones I missed.
  19. This quiz was fun, I totally blanked on the 30s and 70s. I always forget how far the player from the 30s played into the decade and the 70s was a complete whiff. I kicked myself for missing that one.
  20. Yeah, Babe Ruth kicks ass, even 100 years later. I think it's both things you mentioned, they played fewer games but also the floor for a replacement level player back then was much lower than it is now. I'm willing to bet that if Ryan Flaherty was transported back to the 1920s he'd be an all star.
  21. I think I've gone soft on Big Papi cause I like him on the postseason broadcast team. Also how his moment after the marathon bombing rallied the city and also a murder attempt will kind of strip away a lot of ill-will towards someone and put things into perspective. I think EE wins the DH role because he played the full decade, Ortiz didn't. Now I know we're talking about WAR here but my initial reaction for the defining DH of the decade would be Ortiz despite the fact that he retired after the 2016 season.
