It would sort of make me happy if Soto’s performance the next couple of years resulted in him earning far less than the $450 mm he turned down from the Nats.

I shouldn’t underestimate Cohen, but yeah, he may not see that $450M after 2024.

For giggles, Abrams and Gore are combining for 0.6 WAR while Soto is at 0.5. - not that it matters this early in the season.

But it got me thinking. Soto is at 0.5 with an OPS of .720 and OPS+ of 106. Jordan Walker, who got demoted today, has a .718 OPS and an OPS + of 101. His WAR is -0.4.  How does that make sense?

This sounds like he has a lot more than a fastball.

Right, he has good stuff with his secondaries.  He just hasn’t used them as much as he would have to in the bigs.  I heard on a podcast that it was like 75% FB. Not sure how reliable that is and I know people like to make up concerns, but if he’s dominating college hitters with his fastball primarily, I guess there could be some question there.

He’s a great prospect. There’s little chance he gets past #2.

    I must admit, Skenes is starting to look human.  Yesterday, against Kentucky.  6 IP,  7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB,  13 K.   111 pitches!

    On the season.  53 IP,  9 BB,  103 K.

Stephen Strasburg’s junior season at San Diego state.

    119 innings.  19 walks.  195 strikeouts.

Does his usage concern you at all? I don’t necessarily mean his pitch count, but more so his pitch selection.  He seems to get by on an amazing fastball, but doesn’t need to rely on his breaking stuff.

I haven’t followed it that closely to be honest.

What I have gathered from it is the Nats now don’t think it’s fair and TV rights have gone crazy, so they think they are entitled to more.

But that’s the Os fault. This was an agreement. That’s how these things work.  Why should the Os acquiesce to this?

That’s not entirely correct. The agreement back in 2005 was that the Nationals would get a certain percentage of the rights fees (maybe there is a more precise term) and each year they would get an additional 1% until 2012.  Then in 2012 the two sides would negotiate the rights fees for 2012-2016.  Then repeat that process every five years.  That was the agreement for the Nats to move in.

In 2012, they could not agree on a fee. The Nationals said that they were owed, for illustrative purposes, $400.  The Orioles said, “No way. Have you seen how shitty this MASN product is? You are owed $100.”  As the 2005 agreement stated, they were to go before an arbitration panel created by MLB.  That panel said, “Nationals, that $400 number is way too high, you’re not getting that.  But, Orioles, $100 is way too low.  The rights fees awarded to the Nats for 2012-2016 is $200.”

The Nationals say that’s bullshit.  If we had our own network we would bring in so much more.  MLB said, sorry, rules are rules. You get $200.

The Orioles (Angelos) says, No! That is not fair! The arbitration panel is mean! I will not pay $200.  I will pay $100 because I say so.

MLB said, well alright. But you have to put that remaining $100 in escrow when we figure this out.

The Nationals said, wait, we don’t even get that $200? We only get $100 until it’s figured out.

MLB said, yes, that’s right. Even if it is a decade from now. (Which is what today’s decision says).

Oh, and there will be no negotiating of the 2017-2022 rights fees until this is settled.

Still time to rally now that Jarlin Susana's done.     I see on base thrice and a SB with another PA to come against some low-A reliever.

Got on base 4 times tonight without getting the ball out of the infield.

Susana is quite impressive. He actually pitched instead of just throwing 100+ all night.

  6. I hit up some open houses yesterday as I was waiting for my daughter to finish up an activity. Saw one house that was listed at about the same as it would have been last year and significantly higher than what it would have been in 21. The real estate agent told me that they got an offer $78k higher than ask.  That is wild to me.

It does look like inventory is picking back up.

Apparently the Padres are using Rougned Odor in RF while they await the return of Tatis:

And he sent Travis d'Arnaud to the concussion IL after this play, in which Odor was called out because the runner behind him touched the plate before he did:

Such a weird play. If the catcher is blocking the plate without the ball, shouldn’t Odor’s run count? Since he didn’t touch and Kim scored first, didn’t Kim “pass the runner”?

A quick glance at Sally League rosters shows that there are only two players in their age-19 season who have appeared in a South Atlantic League game thus far this season, T.J. White and Junior Caminero. Both are 5 months older than Holliday, born in July 2003 while Jackson was born in December 2003.

I fully anticipate Holliday to be in Aberdeen by mid-May and it is likely that he will be the youngest player in the league when he does.

And both of those guys have been professionals longer than Holliday. TJ white was super young for his class when he was drafted in 2021 out of high school.  He’s also being converted to first base at Wilmington.

Listening to MLB Pipeline, they seem to think Chase Dollander would be picked ahead of Skenes if the draft was tomorrow.  The draft isn’t tomorrow, so we’ll see.

Yeah, they just put Dollander number 2 on their list about a month ago so I’m sure they would defend it. Skenes is just putting up video game numbers in March. Maybe Pittsburgh takes him, but I can’t see Rizzo taking Dollander over Skenes.

By the time the draft rolls around, if not before, I think they'll be talking about him as the best prospect since Strasberg and Gerritt Cole as far as college pitchers go.    Dylan Crews is putting up crazy numbers but there are still questions on how he is against offspeed stuff.    Crews did clean up some stuff I was skeptical about in his stance and load since last year and looks great as well.   Corner outfielder (most likely) with plus hit and power or #1 power pitcher.    I know which one is tougher to find.

The top end of this draft is remarkable. I kind of look at it as having Strasburg and Harper in the same draft (with Crews being closer to MLB). Two elite options. One a pitcher. One a position player. The position player typically is a safer pick.

If Pittsburgh goes Crews, I definitely see Washington go Skenes. If Pittsburgh for some reason goes with someone else, I’m not sure who Washington would take.

Who knows what Adley is thinking, but if I was in his shoes, I would be extremely envious of younger players who were drafted by great organizations like the Braves and Cardinals.  How many minutes were Michael Harris and Spencer Strider in the big leagues before the Braves locked them down with big contracts?

The Braves deals are incredibly team friendly. Acuna already regrets his.  Adley will likely earn 3-4X as much as Harris will.  I’m sure he’s cool with taking things to FA. As a fan, you want to see young stars signed early, sure. But there’s really no reason for Adley to sign long term unless he gets offered sometmore along what the nationals offered Soto.
