If you're number one in position player prospects you should be number one overall as volatile as pitching prospects are.

I listened to Law on a podcast, and I believe he addressed this.  I’m assuming AZ is his number 1 (?).  He talked about their top end guys being better overall while Baltimore had more guys.  He’s very high on Ortiz and believes he and Henderson should both be in the lineup on the left side this summer.

He’s also very bullish on Hall and said that he’s better than Rodriguez but has been unable to prove it.

Interesting….I’m assuming they could block the Ravens request as it’s a lateral move.

He either interviewed or is planning to interview with Washington.  His contract is up at the end of the season and word from KC is they’ll let him move on if he wants to because Reid has no plans to give up play calling.

The Passan deep dive on the Correa unfolding.    He has a tidbit that as Steve Cohen was deliberating from Hawaii - his wife urged him to do it as her dad, a longtime fan, advocated for it.     One way to keep things with in-laws harmonious during the holidays!

But a Correa-Mets union was too appealing for Cohen to play hardball -- especially after his wife, Alex, a die-hard Mets fan whose father, Ralph Garcia, regularly attended games at Citi Field even through the leanest years, advocated for him to sign Correa.

Hope they are still enjoying their holidays as the deal is now in jeopardy.

The playoff picture is coming into a bit more focus. The next win will just about clinch a playoff spot, and if the NYT and 538 simulators are to be believed, they have about a coinflip chance at a WC even if they were to somehow lose out.

If they hold off Cincinnati for the division they'll likely be the 3 seed and most likely host the Dolphins or Chargers. The Chargers' win over Miami last night could be big for playoff seeding. LA has a pretty friendly schedule down the stretch

If the Bengals take the division it's a bit more unpredictable which wild card seed the Ravens would get.

I could see Miami falling out of the playoffs.  Two of the Jets, Chargers, Patriots could join the AFC runner up.

They won’t care at the time they win the WS.  And it’s definitely possible they will say it was all worth it, even if they suck in 3-4 years.  (By the way, I’m not saying they will suck, just hypothesizing.)

It’s very interesting watching all this from the Washington DC suburbs.  The Nats were an excellent team from 2012-19 and got their WS ring.  Now they’re paying the price and you wouldn’t believe the amount of “woe is me” going on among their fan base and their press corps. They spent a ton of money, got some great early results from some of their long term deals (including nearly miraculous performance from Scherzer) and got their ring.  Their fans seem to have forgotten that already.  Their contract with Corbin, which yielded decent results in the first year (which was the WS year) has turned into an utter fiasco.  Their renegotiated deal with Strasburg (who had an opt-out after the WS year) is an even bigger fiasco.   They clearly had more holes than they could patch and so they traded Scherzer (now making $43 mm/yr with the rival Mets) and Turner (now making $27 mm/yr with the rival Phillies).   Soto saw the handwriting on the wall and forced his way out of town. And now the Nats are where the O’s were in 2018, more or less.  You should hear the fans bitching about it.  World Series?  What World Series?

The difference between the Nationals now and the Orioles 2018 is that they got legitimate prospects for Turner and Soto: Gray, Ruiz, Abrams, Gore, Hassell, Wood, Susana, Carrilllo.  They recognized the need for a rebuild much quicker.

I have a question I don't know if anyone has an answer: is the lottery just for the 1st overall pick, or is for draft position for the entire draft? So team who wins lottery pick 1st in every round, or just the 1st round?  Also, does the bonus money allotment go along with the 1st pick as well?

It’s just for the first round.

    Pretty fascinating stuff.

6 games with Wentz at QB:     2-4 record.   Cumulative 32.9 QBR.

6 games with Heinicke:   5-1 record.  Cumulative 46.9 QBR.

Wonder if Wentz will ever get another starting job again.

Some things to consider with Wentz.  The interior of the line was a wreck weeks 3-5.  Their starting center, Roullier, got hurt week 2.  Their primary backup, Larson, was on PUP and wasn’t ready to return. Schweitzer, a guard who can play center, also was hurt. So it was a perfect storm of suckiness.  Larson is back now and it’s solidified the line.

Turner has also changed up the playbook to accommodate Heinicke to make it run heavy as Robinson got off IR.

I don’t know what happens with Wentz.  They can’t bring him back at $26M next year.  He has been a good soldier about the situation though.  I say that as someone who is not a fan of him.

  8. I have a math question for the board.  It shows that the team with the worst record has an 81% chance picking in the top 6 and 19% at 7.  I understand that they can’t pick lower than 7, so it’s 100-81.  But to pick seventh, six teams outside of the top six all need to land in the top six.  Assuming the next four teams, ALL make the top six, two of the following teams need to make it as well.  And their chances are: AZ 12.5%, CHC 9.9%, MN 8.2%, BOS 7%, CWS 5.7%, SF 4.3%, BAL 3.4%, and MIL 2.1%.  It seems to me that the odds of six teams outside of the top 6 ALL making it in the top 6 is way less than 19%.  Am I thinking about this incorrectly?  Help me out.

I think it’s a win-win.  The Nats were a .340 team with Soto and had a horrible farm system.  They weren’t going to win in his remaining Arb years.  Now they’ve got a great foundation for a rebuild that shouldn’t take as long as the Orioles’ because they maxed out their return on Soto rather than waiting too long like we did with Manny.  Meanwhile, SD has three superstars in their prime, two of whom are locked up for 6+ years and Soto can help them for three straight postseasons.  More, if they can extend  him.  Should be a fun few years for their fans, and maybe longer.

Only slight quibble with that is Manny has an opt out after next season.  I think he’s owed 5/160 going into his age 31 season.  I think it’s entirely possible for him to do that.

I think there is a lot of pressure on Preller to win over these next two seasons.  Their starters, with the exception of Musgrove, aren’t controlled beyond 2023.

I get that and would like it too, but Tony’s time is not infinite.  I’m retiring from my job next week, maybe I’ll do a podcast!  😂

You should!  You’d be great at it.  There aren’t that many good baseball podcasts out there.  In the DC market, Al Galdi used to have a radio show on Saturdays that talked Orioles/Nats.  It was excellent.  He now does a Nats podcast with Mark Zuckerman (the Roch of the Nats).  It’s daily, which for me is too much.  But a weekly podcast that has good guests would be awesome.

The Nats got a great package but the reality is that it’s likely SD wins this trade.

Depends on how you want to score it. If Soto leaves after 2024 and you count his WAR for the next 2+ seasons and Bell’s remaining season, I’d take the bet on the 28-30 years of prospects.

If SD wins a WS in the next three postseasons, it doesn’t really matter the WAR comparison.

If Soto doesn’t hit FA, then the rest of his seasons should count and I could easily see him outperforming everyone they gave up.

If Soto hits FA and returns to SD, I don’t think you count the future WAR.

Hassell and Wood could the the foundation for a really, really good outfield for several years.

They could both hit and still end up being the 3rd and 4th OF if Green and Vaquero reach their potential.

It’s good news but I do think OH should get more involved in social media, podcasts, etc….I understand that Tony hates social media (and he’s right to hate it) but this is also a way you can get more stuff out there and more eyes on the site.

Not trying to say how the site should be run..obviously it has its successes without doing these things.  Still, things can always be better and perhaps this is another way to re-invigorate yourself and the site itself.

I think a podcast (maybe weekly) would be a great addition to the content.
