  1. This year’s free agent crops will absolutely love a $100M floor.  At first glance, the reduction of cap and increase of tax actually seems like that would help deep pocket teams like NYY and LAD.

I think SG mentioned it before, but MLB should really look into what the NBA does in terms of Bird rights and such to help keep stars in town.

I'm wondering if Price has a no-trade clause.  It doesn't that he does on Spotrac, but I'm not sure if they typically list that information or not.  I can easily see him having a no-trade clause and not waiving it to come here.

That said, there are still plenty of other options out there that Elias could go after to upgrade the current pitching situation, easily.

He does not have a no trade clause according to 2019 articles before he was traded.  Evidently they were close with Cincinnati on a deal.

I don’t think it would be major leaguers.  It would be prospects.  And I’m not sure it has to be anyone that great.  Maybe a player or 2 ranked in the bottom part of the top 30 or so…something like that.  The Dodgers owe him 16M for next year.  It would be nice if we could get them to pick up a few million but it shouldn’t be necessary.  It’s a salary dump for them imo.  They have a lot of big time FA this year, so having that extra money (to avoid the luxury tax as much as possible) should be helpful to them.  I know they haven’t cared a lot about the luxury tax but still, I’m sure they would rather not have to pay it if they can avoid it.

I’ve seen no indication that they are looking to shed salary.  Hell, they paid Cole Hamels $1M to not pitch for them while trading for Scherzer and Turner.  Their pitching has been plagued by injuries.  Price helps them win which they are trying to do.  Next year, May is out for a large chunk of the season and Scherzer could end up leaving.  I just don’t see them eager to get rid of Price for nothing.

They have plenty to trade.  I’m not worried about that.  Now, whether or not you can land the best available guys is another question but they have an ample amount of upside guys to deal.

But it’s also why a guy like David Price makes sense.  He is still a solid guy and is only signed for one more year and he won’t take much to trade for.  You aren’t gutting your organization.

What would the Dodgers want/need from us for them to give us Price?  Who do we have that would make them better that they couldn’t just go out and get in FA?

  5. I’ll bite.  Besides Rutschman and Rodriguez, what assets do they have to trade to make the MLB product better?  Someone may want Mullins, but would the return outweigh his production in any meaningful way?

    Ryu before free agency: 54-33, 2.98 ERA (129 ERA+).

    Wheeler before free agency: 44-38, 3.77 ERA (100 ERA+)

Ray as of now: 58-56, 4.07 ERA (108 ERA).

I guess I can’t really debate that some team could view Wheeler as a good comp for Ray and cough up $100 mm+.

Ryu was also coming off an injury plagued year and a bit older.  But, yeah, his resume is better that Ray’s.

I’m not taking into consideration that the owners may do some “lite-collusion” and keep FA prices down prior to a labor fight.

Are you saying you think Ray wouldn’t sign with the O’s for under $100 mm, or are you saying you think some other team will offer him $100 mm?   To me, he’s not worth anywhere near that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 5/100.  This isn’t an outstanding FA crop for SP.  You don’t have Cole/Strasburg blowing up the top end of the market so bigger pocket teams will be in play.

Ryu got 4/80 as a 32 year old.  Wheeler 115M.

I'm sure that he could send out another pitcher to start the game (and I'm sure he'll have one ready to go) but this is on the league.  They gave clear guidance on the issue.  This issue is bigger than Dave Roberts.

The league is in the wrong, too.  I definitely agree with that.  But I still believe that Roberts is being weak here (and I generally like Roberts).  Bauer is the one with the most blame for putting everyone in this situation.

    This is what I'm seeing.

One can interpret that as the league is mandating that they start him.  Or that the Dodgers went to the league and asked “what do we do here.”  And the league said you can start him while we investigate.  The latter is more realistic to me.  Doesn’t prevent Roberts from being able to say, you know, these allegations are horrific.  Perhaps I have Bauer sit out a start or two while we get more information.

How are the Padres enjoying their generational talent future HOF'er (at least by the assessment of many OH posters) Manny Machado

I see he is going to miss yet another AS game.

Funny I thought most HOF'er were at least able to make it to most AS games

    .259/.338/.452/.790 for a paultry 34 million 2021 salary.

10th best OPS among ML 3B

12 HR's, only 12 2B's, hard to believe he once had 51 doubles in a season, and now will struggle to hit 25

Seems to have peaked 2 years ago at age 26

    ?

Pretty sure SD hates having their best team this century.

Jealousy is a poor look.  Sad.

Manny was never a great offensive player, at least not on a consistent basis and now he is in a tough hitters park.  He should be a 3-5 WAR guy and has the upside to pop an MVP level year but I wouldn’t expect greatness from him.  Very good yes.  Great?  No.

Average WAR for a HOF 3B is 69.  Nice.  Manny is a tick below 43 at 28 years old.  Not too difficult to see him get well into the 70s.

Severino really has no clue how to do anything.

No play at the plate = COVER THIRD SO THEY CAN’T ADVANCE IN A RUN DOWN LIKE THAT!

That’s the second time this season he has failed to cover a base. He can’t do any of the 3 things in “fundamental.”

”Fun” - He is not fun to watch

”Da” - He is not a defensive asset

”Mental” - He needs to pull his head out of his

Severino was actually going over to back up first as the run down was between first and second.  The pitcher, who was not involved in the rundown, should have been covering third.

This video has a good overhead look.  https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=31647796

Galvis does a poor job of giving the ball up too early.  Franco didn’t get to second in time, though there really isn’t too much he could do about that.

Actually, in a rundown, you should follow your throw so Mancini should have been going to second while Galvis was chasing Ramirez back to first. He instead went to first creating the hole at second.

Following the upcoming season, Coach K is retiring.  Jon Scheyer is going to be the next head coach.

I guess Nate James left for Austin Peay one season too early.
