I know we don't even have a true diagnosis yet, but, if possible, I'd like to see him return and pitch this year and continue to build up some innings.
-
I'll add a couple that are a little different variety. But how about:
1. Cal's homer in his final All-Star game
2. His HR Derby performance and AS MVP in 1991
-
The O's concluded this ten game stretch, with three games against the Yankees scheduled in between their two series with the Rays, at 5-5.
I for one am fairly encouraged.

Sometimes present value and value in the near future are more important than possible future value.
Sure. I was just telling you why somebody would be open to trading from the pen.

I don't know why you would trade from the pen.
Well, it's pretty simple why.
You could extract the most possible future value while losing the least possible future value.

That looked bad. Something tells me one way or the other Wells is done for 2022.
NVM. I see now it was some kind of back/oblique thing. Well, sigh, at least it wasn't an arm.

Wow. Try reading this thread from the beginning. Haha
I'm posting because I'm intrigued by Urias' swing. His bat is pretty flat through the zone. No uppercut at all. He's not a big guy and yet he's hitting them as far as anyone else on the team. Launch angle is great but a flat swing through the ball creating backspin is a beautiful thing. Even when you watch the replay it's like where is all of this power coming from. Timing, leverage, backspin. Urias probably has the best RH swing on the team.
This is a good observation. That shot last night, for instance, I watched with the sound off and quickly unmuted it. Upon contact it looked like it had a chance; it didn't look like it was going 425 ft. And yet it did.

Rightfully so. I don't know if many people that would have expected this type of turnaround without a heavy dose of call-ups. Either way, it's great what they've accomplished and it brings a lot of hope for the future.
Well, but clearly it wasn't right though.

It’s funny to think back on all those articles from last summer decrying how the Orioles were a disgrace to baseball and how there was no end in sight to their losing ways.
That was half the board's opinion two months ago.

Always fun to get a look at prospects. Hopefully, he gets a start tomorrow.

McKenna has 300 career plate appearances, only 100 this season. That is 60 PA's less than both Chirnos and Nevin. I didn't say he should be a starting OF. I said he should be getting more plate appearances.
Who's opportunities do you want to minimize for that to happen?
Mullins? Hays? Santander? Stowers?

Gotcha. Depends on what the offers are as to whether I'd pull the trigger on a potential deal or QO'ing Mancini.
I think we can get a better prospect than the 100th pick in the draft or whatever in return for Mancini.
But it is something to consider. He won't walk for absolutely nothing.

Are the QO rules the same as they were in 2017 or is it market dependent still?
https://wtop.com/mlb/2022/03/major-league-baseball-labor-agreement-details/
The draft pick coming back is dependent upon the total value/average annual value of the deal.
With Mancini, to the best of my understanding, if he signs a FA deal exceeding 25 million total guaranteed, the Orioles would get a third round compensation pick.
I feel pretty strongly that Mancini will sign a multi-year deal in FA that exceeds 25 mil total guaranteed.

There just no way Trey would reject a Qualifiying Offer.
20million for 1 year? Trey’s agent would need to be decertified.
Well, it was 18.4 last offseason, and dropping.
I think he could command 3/36 on the open market. I think he might prefer that to 1/19. I don't think that is unreasonable.
That scenario would net the O's a 3rd pick.

Yes but there’s no way they’d offer him a QO.
Maybe. It depends on what kind of contract you think he's getting in FA.
If the QO is like 1/18, doesn't it make sense for him to take 3/36?
Does he get 3/36?

How? Could he even get a QO? I'm not sure how that works with a mutual option. If he declined it, would we then be able to QO him to get the draft pick?
I'm pretty sure he can reject the option, and they can offer the qualifying offer, which he can likewise reject, and become a FA, eligible for draft compensation upon signing with another team.

Could (should?) change the calculation for Mancini.

Yes, I was surprised by that, too. No Palmer, McNally, Cuellar, Dobson, Flanagan, McGregor, Mussina, Stone, Pappas. But I think Steve Barber was. Was Boddicker on the list?
The only names I remember for sure were Wells, Erickson, and Bedard 2x. And maybe Dennis Martinez.

*13* was the record and it had to have been three runs or less (not "less than three runs"). Not sure if it was Erickson or not.
Was it 13? I saw Bedard was on that list multiple times as well. And ironically, none of the great pitchers from the glory years, though pitcher usage explains that.
And yes, three runs or less.
-
Did anyone see the stat posted on MASN last night?
Tyler Wells gave up more than three runs for the first time since his first start on 4/27.
He made 15 consecutive starts going more than four innings and giving up three runs or less. Set the franchise record. Previous was 11 by Scott Erickson I believe.
Forgive me if I'm off by a little bit, but it was only on screen for a moment and I'm going off memory.

This was a point I made over and over again in discussions about changing the eligibility rules to "stop the abuse."
No matter how you changed the rules, there would be a way to exploit them.

You got me. It should be something more like 0.8%. Griffey has the 36th highest WAR in the history of MLB and there have been just over 20,000 MLB players. So if I did my arithmetic correct Griffey had a better career than about 99.2% of all MLB players.
Yeah, but there haven't been 20,000 guys picked 1:1.

He decided to give up hitting right handed. Not sure that really counts as changing his approach. Looking at Beavers' swing, he'll need to change hand position, get rid of the hitch in the swing, among other things.... How his high school and college coaches could allow him to hit like that his puzzling... I guess he was having success so they decided to let it be...
I'd say giving up on switch hitting is a pretty big change in approach.
