Witt.  More likely to stay with the team long term.

I'm not sure I'd say that.  I would say he is more likely to accrue more career WAR than Adley.

I'm not sure he gets Rutschman even if he gloves it cleanly. Adley was pretty far down the line.

This was my opinion as well.  Would have been very close even with a clean play.

It was interesting. I was in section 12 and some lady came over the PA asking who the craziest fan in section 12 was. I decided I wouldn’t let them down, so I stood up. I turned around and the Oriole Bird was standing there holding chicken tenders and a Capital City gift box. He gave them me. I didn’t even do anything crazy. I think my reputation preceded me.

They were good chicken tenders and I got 4 bottles of mambo sauce and my face plastered on the Jumbotron.

    Fortune favors the bold.

So does humiliating spectacle.  Glad it worked out for you.

I wish someone would fix the spelling of Zimmermann’s name in the thread title.

A good outing by Zim today.   He’d allowed 2 runs through 6 IP, one of which was partially due to McKenna misplaying a double and allowing the runner to get to third, from which he scored on a sac fly.   But he clearly was losing it in the 6th, allowing two loud outs to the deep OF (one on an excellent running backhand catch near the wall by McKenna) to end the inning.   It was very obvious he’d been lucky to escape that inning unscathed and should be removed.  But for some reason Hyde left him in and the leadoff hitter in the 7th absolutely tattooed the first pitch he saw for a long home run.   Then Hyde belatedly pulled him.  So, his line ended up at 6 IP, 3 R.

Solid outing but 5-6 IP may be his absolute limit.

In today's game, that makes him a horse.

Q: I know he's not a prospect, but when you see Keegan Akin looking this good in long relief, and with a lack of starters, trying him again in the rotation is a good move. Or, better to let him succeed in his new role.

    Eric A Longenhagen

I'd let him keep rolling in relief

I'm probably one of the strongest supporters of giving relief pitchers chances in the rotation on this board, going all the way back to Britton, but I'd keep Akin right where he is.  At least until the All-Star break.  Let him continue to have success and gain confidence; or let him turn back into a pumpkin.  But leave him where he is.

No, of course not, but at least there is some life, some hustle

The double itself was evidence of life and hustle.  Now just get rid of overrunning the base.

Though in all honestly, he was thinking three.

I thought I read the number was only like 100 ip or so.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them go to a 6 man rotation when Grayson and DL get up.

Well, they're going to have shut him down in August at that pace.

A six man rotation makes some sense this year.  Interestingly enough, they seem to be transitioning the pitchers to a a 5 man in AAA before they're ultimately called up.

That would suggest they aren't looking to do that.

Is he really on an innings limit, or is it actually a pitch limit? He threw 75 pitches yesterday, which is just a little more than his previous high of 72. If he can keep getting through 6 innings on that, then why not let him throw them.

I'd imagine they have some "formula" that considers both pitch count and innings.  Not all innings are created equal, of course, but simply the up-down act of pitching makes innings the easiest way to track.

At this pace, Wells would throw 134.  If he continues pitching as well as he has recently, that number would almost certainly climb higher.

That seems higher than I would have suspected at the beginning of the year.

I suspect they will shut him down once he reaches a total of innings they think is his max.  That would only become an issue if they were still somehow in a pennant race.  Which is unlikely.

    Oh, certainly.

I'm just wondering what that number is.

Do you think the O's got a "Hometown discount" on either the Trumbo or Davis deals?

They looked to me, at the time, as significant overpays and that's before factoring in the loss of a draft pick.

The players were Free Agents.  Any advantage the O's had was due to the presence of a Qualifying Offer.

They did not extend.  If they were interested in signing a team friendly deal they could have done so before hitting Free Agency.  They explored the Free Agent market and decided that Baltimore offered the best terms.

I'm just saying some people may consider a guy who reaches FA but signs directly with the O's to be "extended."

I suspect any significant disagreement in the frequency of extensions would largely stem from those different perspectives, which is largely semantic.

They didn't extend Davis or Trumbo.

And I think that's the other issue: Semantics.

Plenty are willing to think of signing "hometown" guys on the FA market as basically an extension.

  12. I have to wonder what the Orioles' plan for Wells is this year.

Just how many innings are they willing to let him pitch?

If he's in the rotation all year that's ~30 appearances.

I'm surprised they're letting him go 5-6 innings this early.  I was a bit surprised they let him go near 4 in spring training.

It seems to me they are planning on limiting his innings in one fashion or another later in the season.

    From Roch:

Any updates on Matt Harvey? When would a ruling take place regarding a potential suspension?

I’m only able to answer the first part. He’s made two starts at extended spring training, with a third expected today, and continues to build up innings and arm strength. I thought a possible suspension would be announced after a team signed him, but that’s not the case. So … I don’t know. Sorry.

Is there even a spot for Harvey at this point?

    3.98 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 11.1 K/9, 3.6 K/BB.

The WHIP is a little high, driven by 22 hits in 20.1 IP.   But based on K’s, maybe a little unlucky.

With an 11 K/9 rate, and a 0 HR rate, I'd imagine his FIP is better than his actually ERA, but I don't know where to find that for MiLers.

The WHIP is high, and I notice his BB/9 is a bit higher than it has been in the past.

For all the talk of him being "finesse," he's still missing a lot of bats.
