I don’t get it.  They aren’t coming off an 85 win season, how dare they sign anyone to anything but a MiL contract!  This is going to kill their chances of winning in 2024!

You literally two days ago were crapping on the idea of signing Grienke in Baltimore.

Now someone else does it, and it's an excuse to criticitze the O's for not doing.

Gee, it's almost like no matter what they do, you would b and moan about it.

I guess I'm just too stupid and moronic to understand the complexities of SG.

He's already told us: establish elite talent pipeline, spend appropriately when it's time, acquire good ML talent from trades. The LF wall is part of an effort to actually be able to finally maybe attract a decent pitcher in free agency, something that has almost never happened in Camden Yards history.

To me it's not that hard to see what the plan is, mostly because he told it to our face when he was hired, and everything he said he would do so far he's done.

Exactly.  I'm wondering what the mystery is.

Yep still ok with the plan that Elias put into place and has been clear and straight forward with the fanbase about since Day 1.

I will say that one year from now I expect him to start putting the pedal to the metal.   Feel free to hold me to that.   Just as I continue to question why you get so frustrated when Elias is doing exactly what he said he would do.

The irony is some of the most vocal critics of the rebuild called for EXACTLY this kind of rebuild for years- many of those corresponding with us actually making the playoffs.

And three years into it, they completely flip-flop on their "principles", and start demanding signing FAs so we can "compete" for 75 wins.

    Can't make this stuff up.

Rockies are pushing for Kris Bryant according to Heyman.  I guess they feel you don’t have to suck for 5 years and wait until all of your prospects are AS before you can sign someone of value.

Now there's a franchise we should be emulating.

He better hurry, Correa just put his Houston area house up for sale lol.

Well, it was only a million dollar home, so a starter home for a guy like Correa.

It seems very likely that Mr. Correa will be upgrading his real estate portfolio very soon- wherever he ends up, including Houston.

    The money means nothing.

2020 means nothing because of the sample.  2019 was terrible and he was good last year.

Hes a reliever and for the most part, he has been elite but sometimes a reliever, even an elite one, has a bad year.  What he did in 2019 means little to me right now.

He was horrendous in 2019. He was horrendous in 2020- walking over 7 per 9.  And he was horrendous in the second half of last year after the trade.  His "good" season last year was a good first half.

For someone who made some solid objections to the idea of signing Grienke, this seems awful similar.

Acquiring a guy with a big name, big paycheck, and troubling performance trends.

Well it depends on what it could cost to get him but I would love to see us field a team that is a f’ing embarrassment and get several good players and actually look the part of a franchise who gives a sh*t.

I realize many fans think it’s crazy to expect their team to actually want to try and win games but I’m happily in the minority against the irrational group.

    You didn't answer his legitimate questions/objections.  ;)

Alberto just signed with the Dodgers.  Guess they feel he has some value.

He almost surely signed a minimum contract commensurate with his minimal value.

My point wasn't really about Alberto, or Pietro for that matter, but simply that elite contact skills, if that's all you bring to the table, do not constitute a valuable player.

Mateo has more offensive upside, but in SSS last year at short he was -2 OAA. I think that type of defense at a crucial position hurts pitcher development. The two were roughly equivalent in WAR last year (.6 v .5)

I don't love Torreyes, I'm just not sure what else is available...and I am opposed to Mateo being the opening day SS. Maybe I'm overreacting to a small sample size and he will be better defensively then he was.

Again, from what I saw, Mateo's defense wasn't terrible in my eyes.  Now, I very well might be singing a different tune come May, but that is my position as of now.

I think it is highly unlikely Mateo is ever going to become a ML regular- particularly as a SS.

However, I think he has upside and a potential role on the next competitive Orioles' team.

I see nothing of that nature in Torreyes.

Chirinos is strictly a back-up for me at this point. He had some solid production for Texas and Houston in 2018-2019. Severino, for me, was about unfulfilled potential, which he never came close to realizing in Baltimore. He would have been a terrible back-up for Adley, imho.

Oh, yeah, Chirinos is definitely a back up.  But, imo, that's all Severino ever was; he was just on a 50 win team devoid of talent.

From what I read, Chirinos was only in Houston in 2019, after Elias came to Baltimore. But between Hyde, Cossins, Elias and the people they all know, I am sure they have a good feel for what they are getting.

    Agreed.

I'll say also as someone who regurlarly watches the Texas Rangers, I always liked Chirinos.

I haven't seen him consistently in a few years, and he's getting up there, but I believe he'll be a pretty clear upgrade over Severino.

What's your reasoning (genuinely curious)? His defense at SS last year was terrible, and he's going to be 27 in June.

It was SSS but I didn't find his defense to be terrible.

The fact is Mateo is younger and has been better recently than Torreyes.  He also has a better prospect pedigree- I believe.

TBH, I don't think there's a real good case for Torreyes over Mateo.

Good grief, that went ridiculous quickly. So, about the 40 man roster….

Seems that Chirinos would be the 40th man, but there is plenty of room if Correa and another MLB starter want to come aboard.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 40 man tbh.

There's half a dozen guys on it that we could lose without me blinking.

Thinking Ronal Torreyes wouldn't be a terrible fit for the Orioles? He played a decent SS last year for the Phillies...and frankly the market is very thin, and so is our 40 man at that position

    I'd rather watch Mateo.

Tell me how much time Adley’s father and grandfather spent in a major league dugout.

I definitely believe there is something to mentoring from veteran players.   Does that mean Chirinos is a better option than Nottingham or Bemboom?   Not necessarily.   It’s one of many factors to be considered.    And is Chirinos the mentoring type?   That’s for Elias and his staff to know.

And one would assume that with their shared Houston experience, Elias and staff have a pretty good book on what Chirinos is like in the dugout/clubhouse/etc.
